  • Our first Air Race weekend!! This is the somewhat rushed practice on the Saturday morning after a delayed arrival due to the weather at Cranwell.
The first phase is the ‘Scatter Pattern’. This is to get you up and onto the course safely below other racers ahead. As it is a handicap event, your start is delayed based on your aircraft performance so that everyone should finish at the same time. Generally in an RV, you will start somewhere near the back, but not always! The Scatter in this case was to be below 300ft until Scatter Point 2 (SP2) whereby we could climb to race height, generally 600ft above ground level. We struggled to identify SP2 but we were confident we had everything else.
After landing we got the maps back out and had a thorough check over the course and discussed our cockpit workflow which was a bit hap hazard initially. The next video will be the first race!
This is the Van's RV-7 tailwheel aircraft that I built in my garage over 5 years. It's first flight was in July 2023 and we now fly it everywhere we can visiting people and places and documenting our adventures along the way for friends and family. I flew fighter jets for 20 years and now just enjoy flying around the country with my wife who is also a professional pilot although she lets me do most of the flying! We will be competing in the British Air Racing Championship this year which is why you see 777 on the tail!

Lovely aircraft and fantastic camera/telemetry setup. What do you use for getting the telemetry info? Good luck with the Air race.

Thank-you so much! It's my first aircraft build and early days for video editing so some improvements to come. I don't want the cameras to be distraction whilst flying so I just turn them on for the duration and edit whatever I get afterwards. It is possible to get some limited telemetry from the gopros but I use the data from the Garmin G3X. There are a few software programs out there but I use a program called 'Telemetry Overlay'. Quite fiddly and infinitely adjustable but I have made a couple of templates that I stick to now. I see you have GDU 460s in your Skyleaders so you just pull the CSV file off that after flight. Hope that helps!
