@@ward9I think you'll find that the chikuzen biwa is a type of guitar in itself. :-) If I am to use "traditional" in the sense of "long-established", which is my meaning, then the chikuzen biwa is still more traditional than the European guitar. Guitars (as I think you mean) have been around since ~1,000 AD; the biwa predates them by 300 years. And now that I've woken up in the middle of the night and written this, I'll be going back to sleep. It's a funny modern world we live in.

Also a woman called Nini Music does a similar thing with Taiwanese folk metal. Her song Homeland is genuinely amazing

@@SungazerDNB I think they mean there's a lot more space between the fret and fretboard with this instrument compared to a guitar. You can do bends and get vibrato effects with this instrument by pushing straight down, where with a guitar you have to slide the string back and forth. You can see this technique in the video.
Imagine my shock when i got a guitar with a set of jumbo frets and the strings indeed hover above the frets. Having played vintage all my life im having to relearn the guitar

I just love how several metal strings can make up such an universal musical instrument for the whole world, and each country could adopt their own type of it. America got the electronic guitar, Russia got ukulele, Japan got this, and everyone else also got their own types. It's pretty interesting to think about it

That's such a cool instrument. I love how you get vibrato by pushing down more since your fingers don't touch a fretboard. So neat.
Your fingers never touch the fretboard, not with a guitar either. The string touches the fret
