Thanks a million for this! Instructive and right to the point. Got a huge roll of copper tape today, and now I can play my LP Classic in winter. With socks on! I wasn't able to find the bridge grounding cable, but I took the ground from the jack instead and it works. Hopefully. There might have been a hint of static through my hand against strings/bridge/saddle, but I can live with that. A whole lot better now. Again may thanks for inspiration and instructions!

Back in the early 70's I used to bus to work, and there was this guy that used to travel along the same route. One day he pulled this little block of clear cube resin out of his bag which was flashing with hundreds of tiny neon bulbs, all random. I asked how he made it, he obviously didnt disclose but said he was a techy guy that worked on film sets, and that the flashing cube would last at least a year without a battery change. I was amazed at that thing and always tried to work out how he made it. Well I finally years and years later did work it out, and realise that he must have been a bit of a genius, all those years ago to have made that. He was a nice guy too. Your elevator story triggered this memory, it must be fun on a film set!!. Thanks for the video.

Good continuity to ground .Fixed the static on the covers BUT got same static if u rub the back of the body on the finish. Covers are now fine. In fact it build up enough charge to give you a bit when discharge to anything going to ground if you rub the finish front or back. Good to see a real 3 way switch. For 1st time ever I broke down & bought a newer 'Crafted in China' Epiphone Les Paul.. Had never seen the little PU selector, silicone box 3 way. The switch is complete crapola. The rubber tip was missing. Regular ones don't fit. The post is like 1/16th thick!! So, I filled the rubber tip with JB Weld and shoved it on & let it set. Works.

I think it’s the paint that is holding the charge. I had the same problem so I put shielding on everything inside my LP - still had the static. Then I saw inside a Tele Ultra they have a ground wire attached directly to the body. So I put a ground wire screwed to the LP body inside the compartment, that solved it. Dead quiet now.

    • @DWinegarden2
      @DWinegarden2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@paulabgop3659 I ran the ground wire from a ground point (on one of the pots, I soldered the ground in place) inside the cavity of the LP and ran the wire with a jagged eyelet on the end to the inside of the control cavity then I put a small wood screw through the jagged eyelet right into the wood to press the metal directly into the wood so the wire was firmly touching the wood and the paint on the guitar body. Then I put some shielding tape over the crew and closed it up. It seemed to work well for me. I think it gets rid of the static build-up on the surface of the guitar. It's worth a try.

I've got a Tele that develops that static crap at certain times of the year. I just started rubbing it down with a dryer sheet when it acts up. I did install ground wires that contact the control plate and the pick guard, but I didn't cover the backs of them with insulating tape. After all, the same thing works fine for grounding the metal bridge and the strings. I don't like plastering everything with that insulating tape. That stuff ain't cheap, and I am!

So you are clairvoyant, given the fact that apparently you can see how much money people have without even knowing them? You know you can make a ton of money with that right? Hell: even the CIA will probably be very interested; I know they were back in the 60s.
If you know your engineering you will know that the jack (not the cable) can never be the problem, only the socket. In this case: the crap quality of Gibson's assembly is. In other words: you're full of crap. And if you knew your stuff you'd know quality is buying a couple of Neutrik plugs, a roll of Sommer or Klotz (or Mogami, if you've got money to burn) cable and taking an hour with your soldering iron to make a better cable than anything that's for sale in stores, in most cases even for less money.
And for your information, as you crystal ball might yet not function as well as you think it does: I've got more than enough money to buy a dozen Gibons, I just don't want them. I've got a great Fender Strat American Deluxe and a modified Schecter with humbuckers here: both blow each and every Gibson made after 1970 straight out of the water, qualitywise and tonewise.
The discussion here is not bigdickery about money: it's about quality, in which Gibson has been lacking for the last decades, which is the reason why they've been down the drain financially for almost their entire history. If you knew a thing or two about business, you would know quality assurance would be the reason for brand new guitars not to end up on Dave's bench. Again: GIbson's QA sucks; you're not paying tons of money for a guitar to be shit from the start.
There are plenty quality guitars out there, even for a lot less money, so why would you buy crap like Gibson? Only simpleminded fanboys or the poorly informed would do this. The true player never buys for the brand: he/she buys for the quality, the playability and the tone.

I have owned over a dozen Gibson guitars and every single one of them has had a problem with static. The first thing I do with every one of them is shield the control cavity and toggle switch cavity if it’s a Les Paul. I love Gibson guitars for their sound and the way they feel but I don’t know why Gibson won’t shield their cavities. I’m sure it’s for reasons of saving money. In my opinion it makes an expensive guitar cheap. Nobody wants to hear static noise while they’re playing. Gibson is lucky that they make the coolest and most iconic guitars otherwise they would be out of business.

Nice work! Thanks for sharing! I have a 2016 gibson SG that has really bad static. I got rid of the pcb for handwired and I still have loads of static. My next step will be shielding, been waiting on the tape to arrive. I'm afraid it won't help me because I have static on the whole back of my guitar. Touch the wood the plastic it doesn't matter. It's so bad when it pops it starts turning on my pedals no joke. Do I need to sand off this nitro shit paint? Dryer sheets don't last but 10 minutes.. I need a permanent solution for my 1200$ guitar!! Any advice or tips? Thank you for the videos.

Why are your likes and dislike numbers turned off? Too many people disliking your vids? 🤷‍♂️ That's usually what, causes people to do it. Their ratio sucks.

Dave Reaume, what are your thoughts on the various conductive paints (the one from Crimson Guitar comes to mind, but have not done any research) (from a Patreon patron)?

It's good until it gets old and flakes off into your pots and pickups. I think it's great for applying to the little passageways between compartments to connect everything. Otherwise, I'd pass on the paint. For what it's worth, I dont care for shielding anyway.

I bought a lespaul classic a month ago I don't think I noticed the noise until a week ago but it's a hum and if I touch a string it goes away in fact if I touch any piece of metal on the guitar the hum goes away what could it be and how do I solve it

Continuity doesn't even do anything. Why even worry about it? Mine has spotty continuity and works so well I thought my Strat was broken when I was done because it was so quiet. Nope, not broken. Just that quiet because continuity doesn't matter.

The gold just wrecks the monochromatic groove it's got going on.

FYI, if you rub down the copper with a piece of the backing paper you'll save your fingers from the sweet cuts that copper can make. And maybe the second contact on the jack was for a definite ground point under tension as opposed to the barrel against the threaded collar.
