You should try to listen to their EP's that are previous to this; this is actually a mix of three songs if I am not wrong; the state that I am in, lazy line painter jane, and string bean jean, there three or them it's on the Wikipedia site; the literature quality of the lyrics is more obvious on those songs.
This is for my friend Ronan, who is the personification of this song ,in my mind anyway. He passed away last week after a long debilitating illness. We miss him, we love, we never forget him.
If he had a friend who dedicated this song for him then you all were lucky. We never lose someone even when we don't think of them every day because they leave an imprint on us forever. I haven't had the same lose as you but when I do I will get drunk and listen to B&S. :)
I bought this album with my first salary; for me Belle and Sebastian's masterpiece. It still excites me like the first listen, or like when I saw them in Rome in concert at the Orus club.
I heard this song for the 1st time 3 weeks ago. Now it repeats in my head over and over, in a good way, and I dance to it daily cleaning my house. It just rocks and is lyrically brilliant.
I was surprised I was happy for a day in 1975 I was puzzled by a dream It stayed with me all day in 1995 My brother had confessed he was gay It took the heat off me for a while He stood up with a sailor friend Made it known upon my sister's wedding day. Got married in a rush to save a kid from being deported Now she's in love I was so touched, I was moved to kick the crutches From my crippled friend She was not impressed Cause I cured her on the Sabbath I went to confess When she saw the funny side, we introduced my child bride To whiskey and gin To whiskey and gin. The priest in the booth had a photographic memory For all he had heard He took all of my sins and he wrote a pocket novel Called The State That I'm In So I gave myself to God There was a pregnant pause before he said okay Now I spend my days turning tables round in Marks & Spencer They don't seem to mind. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. Oh love of mine, would you condescend to help me? Cause I am stupid and blind Desperation is the Devil's work, it is the folly Of a boy's empty mind Oh and now I'm feeling dangerous Riding on city buses for a hobby is sad Why don't you lead me to a living end I promised that I'd entertain my crippled friend, My crippled friend. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin, I gave Myself to providence and I've Been there and back again The state that I am in. I gave myself to sin And I've been there and back again Oh yeah
This was the song chosen by Electric Honey for B&S to record as a single/EP but Stuart persuaded them to allow a full album recorded at Ca Va studios in Glasgow. I still have the original demo cassette which when first listened to, people likened to Donovan.
This is awesome. I was quite a die-hard B&S fan some years ago, not anymore, but it still gave me chills to think about this cassette. May I ask you how did you manage to get it?
I was "studying" at Stow College on the Music Business course where the not yet fully formed Belle & Sebastian sent their demo tapes. Two years later the same course found Snow Patrol & issued their 1st release (under a different name) & the same year Biffy Clyro played a lunchtime set in the car park.
Hashbury Stumble what year was that? I did the HNC course 00-01 and we did a band called Pupkin. I remember getting a few of the original B&S and Biffy EP'S from Alan Rankine. think I've got a couple in the loft.
I forgot how much I love B&S. I see what you mean about the Smiths album cover but the only similarity is that it black and white. Pretty sure Morrissey wasn't breast feeding a cuddly toy..
I forgot how much I like Belle and Sebastian. Love this song. I was born in 1975 was I happy then who know. Just stumbled across them again tonight. Lovely

Because of course the glitch washes over everyone but the autistic teenager (me) who ALMOST COULDN'T LISTEN TO THE DARN CD ITSELF BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID GLITCH
@@anyatindall5678 yeah you're right enough. Kind of sounds like it should be on if you're feeling sinister tho... Also fox in the snow feels like it should be on this. No idea why I think this lol.
Morrissey can only dream of writing a song this beautiful...! (Okay, I take that back. I'm a reformed Smiths fan and they meant a lot to me in my younger years. Morrissey is working on ruining that now, of course, but he can never change the fact that I Know It's Over is a heartbreaker of epic proportions. But still, I think Belle & Sebastian are, ultimately, a better band with more variety.)
I'm '81 - This is one of the best 10 songs of my life... Makes me crying like Beethoven 9th...
Yeah me too.

Tigermilk is such a brilliant album. The Smiths of the 90's.
This is not a pop song. This is a work of literature with musical backing.
You should try to listen to their EP's that are previous to this; this is actually a mix of three songs if I am not wrong; the state that I am in, lazy line painter jane, and string bean jean, there three or them it's on the Wikipedia site; the literature quality of the lyrics is more obvious on those songs.
One of the bests for Belle & Sebastian.

All the best Gavin. What a song to remember your friend with. I hope you are able to enjoy it again soon. Stay safe my man.
A true friend... Ronan will know you cared.
Heartfelt feelings x
Goosebumps every single time I listen to this.
I bought this album with my first salary; for me Belle and Sebastian's masterpiece. It still excites me like the first listen, or like when I saw them in Rome in concert at the Orus club.
A commentary on society and how to live in it, and a musical gem, a glimmer of hope for the human race...
I heard this song for the 1st time 3 weeks ago. Now it repeats in my head over and over, in a good way, and I dance to it daily cleaning my house. It just rocks and is lyrically brilliant.
I saw them last year and they played this to open the gig. It was the best B&S I’ve had the luck to see. I felt so incredibly lucky
A recording that when first hear it, makes you stop breathing. It's that powerful. x
um obra prima perfeita e atemporal carregada de emoção e sentimentos. sem palavras um dos melhores dos escoceses.
The Glasgow scene in the 90's were were so good!
I was surprised
I was happy for a day in 1975
I was puzzled by a dream
It stayed with me all day in 1995
My brother had confessed he was gay
It took the heat off me for a while
He stood up with a sailor friend
Made it known upon my sister's wedding day.
Got married in a rush to save a kid from being deported
Now she's in love
I was so touched, I was moved to kick the crutches
From my crippled friend
She was not impressed
Cause I cured her on the Sabbath
I went to confess
When she saw the funny side, we introduced my child bride
To whiskey and gin
To whiskey and gin.
The priest in the booth had a photographic memory
For all he had heard
He took all of my sins and he wrote a pocket novel

So I gave myself to God
There was a pregnant pause before he said okay
Now I spend my days turning tables round in Marks & Spencer
They don't seem to mind.
I gave myself to sin, I gave
Myself to providence and I've
Been there and back again
The state that I am in.
I gave myself to sin, I gave

Una amiga me ha recomendado esta canción porque la intentó tocar a la guitarra, gracias por descubrirme esta joya maravillosa persona 😊
0:42 = one of the most beautiful guitar chords I´ve ever heard
I love this band and this song so much :´)
A primeira vez que escutei essa música foi 1999: ali minha estória de amor com essa incrível banda começou.
Curioso agora
I first listened to this watching the movie ' Storytelling '. Two lovely masterpieces.
it's perfect
One of Stuart's finest melodies

Belle & Sebastian 1995-96 : Snow Patrol (as Polar Bear) 1997-98.
We got copies of the Moondials disc which I think Stevie Jackson played on.
Looks like you have been spending your 90's time in the coolest setting avaliable. Awesome.

Most pleasant, the instrumentation, it is transporting.
more like Trainspotting!
Ha ha, never felt that good since Archie Gemmel scored against Holland.
you should listen to I wan you by bob dylan ;)
Discovered in the Mission, San Francisco, only to find they were from bonny Scotland. Seminal works.

Gran canción, una de sus mejores. Muy recomendable para los que aprenden a tocar la guitarra pues se puede versionar fácil.

The first b and s song i ever heard , on the car radio going to work , 1997 i think , instantly hooked, have been ever since.
"I was happy for a day in 1975", channelling the monkees "daydream believer".
O yonlu amava essa musica
Beautiful song but I'm wondering if they've lifted the melody from the Wicker Man soundtrack?
When my dad ripped our Tigermilk CD, why did THIS song get the jumpscare choking baby glitch noise? IT'S THE BEST SONG ON THERE! *scream of pain*
Because of course the glitch washes over everyone but the autistic teenager (me) who ALMOST COULDN'T LISTEN TO THE DARN CD ITSELF BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID GLITCH
the movie "Storytelling" brought me here...The track suits it well
