Blues Traveler has been a favorite of mine since a kid because of the harmonica, well, and his voice. But Anyways is one of my favorites songs but I love the harmonica solo in this song too. When I first heard this song I thought he said the heart brings you back until I got the CD and then I learned the right words.
Brought here by the memories of being a 14 year old goth girl loving this song but not getting the lyrics, now i am 34 and it resonates with me now more than it ever could've then. I've been an on and off opiate addict and the hook brought me back on drugs so many times, the hook drove me to compare myself to impossible standards and let me believe in an ideal that will never exist, but now this song in this era really really resonates because the curtain is falling and we're sick of all the bullshit thrown are way I love John Popper he has a voice that makes me want to cry in a good way.
Glad this song gave you strength but that's not what this song is about. It's basically saying that as long as any song has a good "hook", it doesn't matter what the rest of the lyrics to the song are about. People will keep coming back regardless of the fact that the song is not saying anything of substance. Which is true of this song. It's purposely not saying anything of substance to prove that it doesn't matter because the "hook" to the song is so enjoyable.
I get what you're saying but I've met John Popper who said he was at the height of his weight problem when this came out and he wrote it about things that have no meaning sounding so good that people look for meaning where there isn't any but some of the lyrics are about his frustration with PC culture and politics it's a song about nothing that was a joke about the lengths we go to in order to just buy into nothing. It has meaning now to me more than it used to because anytime I got back on drugs and let myself self destruct I thought I needed this big answer to give people for why it happened as each time it happened it would be after more than one year of being clean in AA and AA in my opinion is about nothing. I was looking for meaning where there was none, it's just that it all sounded good but in reality I was placing all my trust in the lives of people who had nothing to say and a badly written antique of a book written by a total asshole. People highlight the fuck out of that big blue book every day all over the world and it literally isn't saying anything of much importance. So upon realizing that I was able to see the bigger picture of addiction and realize it was less about "working the steps" to find inner peace and more about just accepting my own failures and realizing and preparing for others to fail. It's not just the hook of the song I find enjoyable and I watched all the same "the shocking meaning behind some of our favorite songs" videos long before writing my comment but it's funny that I offended two people so much they felt the need to make a comment about reddit which isn't something I know much about, so they can feel smug or the other comment where the guy makes such a point to discredit how I felt about a song released in the 90's that mostly was beloved by fratboys and deadheads.
Staci Wiley No he guy said reddit is leaking because a while back I made a post about songs that have obscure meanings and I mentioned this song. He probably saw that post and said reddit is leaking. Unless I'm wrong. In which case I'm sure everyone would be much obliged if I shut my mouth. But don't listen to what other people say. If you find inspiration in the song then by all means, enjoy your connection with it. Plenty of songs are open to various interpretation. I think it's great that it give you strength and I wish only health and happiness for you on your journey. You should proud of how far you've come.
This is the best sarcastic song ever. He literally tells you that the lyrics dont matter what he says it's the hook in a song that what you want to hear.
All the lyric are him saying the song has no meaning the we listen because the hook is catchy. The song has no meaning and he did it on purpose. Almost like look you will like anything.
Genius if you ask me...catchy ass tune and telling you through the whole song that your gonna listen to it again and again! Talk about securing royalties 😉
This is my first time looking up the lyrics, after my whole life of hearing this song and always thinking it was the catchiest thing i’ve ever heard. I feel violated.

+jrbviwiz It is a big finger but not to us. I see it as a master Tune Smith sculpting the ultimate slap in the face to the music industry he is subjugated to. And in doing so it became a number one. LOL His reference to financial suicide demonstrates the confines his art must exist under and yet this song is the most sublime FUH Q ever bestowed upon the 3 minute diddy governing body.
LrdAsmodeous and Scott Harrington, Wow, thanks for making me actually think. I was just taking it at face value of "we can say anything in a song and people won't care, they'll still buy it" and thinking of it directed at us as the consumer.
Yeah, and that is somewhat true, though. It's kinda that everything about the whole system is messed up, but he really does just describe what the average pop song is built as. Because the hook will always bring you back, even if you don't have any idea what the rest of it was.
+LrdAsmodeous and on top of it all, to have the whole song pay homage to every literal note of Canon in D minor puts this awesome piece on a whole new level of brilliant!

great song
This song is a lyrical masterpiece but let us not overlook the ridiculous virtuosity of John Popper. He makes that harmonica do things that I didn't know they could do! (Like that scoop at 3:05!)
It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks
Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
Was that the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin to see
What you're doing to me
This MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So desperately I sing to thee of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feeling on the shelf
I've tried, well no, in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much pride inside
To hide or slide
I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride till until I've died
And only then shall I abide by this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute diddies
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn of all your cities to the ground
But I've found, I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day
Hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on luck
Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook
On that you can rely
I'm today years old I got the Peter pan reference
This song is my anti drinking song 1 drink is the hook

Eminem aint got shit on this guy
I hate this song and it's middle finger to all of us... It's so catchy though!
+jrbviwiz I see it less as a middle finger to anyone, and more of a deconstruction of the average pop song.
LrdAsmodeous and Scott Harrington,
Wow, thanks for making me actually think.
