  • I'm on the pursuit of ripper seams in all my makes so have decided to try all the hard things so I am a step closer to achieving my goal. This week I finished my Pattern Emporium Songbird Kimono Cardigan but gave it a little elevated twist which resulted in it being the best thing I have made to date! Come and check out what I did.... plus get an update on what fabric I chose for my Busy Bee Challenge mystery pattern challenge? Did I find what I wanted in my fabric stash or did I have to go shopping?

    ❤ Thank you so much! You described that irrational and paralyzing fear so well. I think I am afraid of being disappointed after it is finished. You are giving me the courage to overcome that nonsense.

      Awesome! I’ve just had a failed sewing project so understand the disappointment factor for sure. I’ve just framed my mind differently to learn from it rather than think I’m not good at what I’m doing. In the past this failure would have been enough to not touch a sewing machine for another 10 years 😜

    Really appreciated your discussion on your thought process before making the duster. We all have those skills that we avoid learning because our head tells us it's too complicated. fortunately French seams is not one of them but I also have this list. I will now think of them as skill builders which takes the pressure off. Thanks

    I have been using French seams almost exclusively for the past couple of years on woven's. Now that you've seen how lovely and professional they look I am sure you'll use often, too. As always, loved the Backyard Catwalk. 😍

      Thank you! Will definitely be looking to incorporate French seams as much as possible going forward. I am a convert! 😁

    Your Songbird is gorgeous! I love seeing how proud of it (and yourself) you are. Isn't it a wonderful feeling to tackle something that you're afraid of and conquer it? It deserves so many otters!
    One of my first projects I ever did, just last year, was a tote with French seams, and because I was new to seeing, and just following directions, I had no idea they might be considered tricky or intimidating to do. Sometimes it's good when you don't know better 😁 It is a bit more difficult to wrap my head around doing them on an armhole, but I haven't even done an armhole yet.
    It was so good to see this posted, because I'm embarking on the first garment for me, through a Closet Core course, and making a skirt. So, for my first garment, the bits that feel hardest is having to use the lengthen/shorten line, and cutting the pattern apart to add length. That meant having to draw my own lines in a couple places. Hopefully, I did that close to correctly. And the pattern calls for an invisible zipper. I've never done any zipper on my own, so I'll be practicing that on some scrap real soon. The plan is to have a finished toile next weekend. I'm taking my very sweet time with this thing. Am I a wee bit scared? Yep! 😊
    I LOVE your fabric for Busy Bees. That is going to make a fabulous Andi set, and it looks great next to you. Looking forward to that reveal.

    I have done French seams, but never an armhole. You have inspired me again to build my skills!

    Hi Kate! I'm of a similar height and never thought a length like your duster would be flattering. But, wow, yours looks absolutely stunning and makes me want to give one a try! It's so beautiful and floaty and of course gorgeously finished! Thanks for sharing.

      I’m glad I’ve inspired! I’m a boho girl at heart so have had a few long style floaty cardigans in my time… except now I can make them myself. Win! Give it a go!

    Your duster is beautiful, I can see how proud you are of it and why not. You have almost tempted me to look at this pattern. I made a plain evening top in a voil fabric a few years ago and loved to use French seams, as you say the fabric is so sheer I didn’t want overlocked edges peaking through and you can’t guarantee a neat edge. Well done 👏. The Fleur is also on my list and I want to make it to wear to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham in a few weeks. Wish me luck ❤

    Really pretty. Excellent job and totally 5 Otter worthy! It’s a good start to encourage me to do French seams and just sew anything- I hesitate spoiling pretty fabric, which is my main hesitation 😬

    Love a French seam but it’s a real commitment of time so I tend to save for special makes,you’ve just convinced me that I should do more often as your kimono is amazing 😊

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! Agree on the time commitment but I’m now finding I can sneak a few in, even if I don’t do it on the whole garment. Someone else commented that French seams will help make your clothes last longer so I’m going to try and do them whenever time and design allows. Thanks for watching!!

    Ooh I’m so glad I watched this before making my Songbird. I picked up the pattern when it was half price and some lovely georgette fabric to make it. I just do French seams now! What a finish you’ve got on yours! It’s fabulous.

    French seams! Wrong sides together really messes with the head 😂
    Totally worth it but every time I use them I sew at least one seam wrong and have to utilise the good old seam ripper 😊😂

    The finish on your kimono is beautiful 😍 I’ve used french seams on some scrunchy totes but never on a garment. I do have some georgette that I plan to use for an overlay and a beautiful black one for a kimono so I’m going to have to get my big girl pants on and do those french seams 😱 I have to admit that the sleeve heads scare me 😬💞

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you!! My big girl pant wearing worked so give it a go. If you think about it.. it’s just sewing each sleeve head twice instead of once. You’ll love it 😊

    Welcome to team French Seams. It's a really pretty finish. I only just pulled my overlocker out of storage after years because I'm doing some work with knits, otherwise I like an enclosed seam. It can be more work but it's so good. Also it means reading every single pattern and figuring out how to put the garment together when the pattern writer assumed you'd just overlock everything. Annoying, but worth it. My other preferred seam for things like sleeve heads is a flat-felled seam. Great for pant legs, too, especially the inseam. I love that garment so much, absolutely wonderful job, and it looks so expensive.

      @RipperSeams  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like being on this team! Snuck a few in on my latest make so it looks like I’ll be following your path. Will explore flat-felled seams too as keen to see what I can do with sleeve heads…. so thanks for the tip. So much fun learning ahead! 😊

    Hi Kate, I really like your cardi. I dont have an overlocker, so whenever possible, i have to do french seams. Your garment will last so much longer now that you've committed to doing them.
    I really love the fabric for your busybee challenge and its a great choice of pattern too.
