    Ariel actually had many interests. She collected things from the human world she was an explorer and she wanted to dance. The song “part of your world” is sung before meeting the prince. She already wanted to be human so the sacrifice she makes was for herself just as much as for him. It’s also about the self sacrifice for love. Something Eric does for her in the third act.

    • @kathycoleman4648
      @kathycoleman4648 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Yes. Ariel was interested in humans before ever seeing one for real. Nor was her thing that she wanted to find a prince. Her thing was that she wanted to find out what it was like on the surface and rescuing Eric and wanting to actually meet him became her catalyst.

  • @ejbell

    I never got the criticism of Ariel not having interests. I thought that was the point of her treasure trove cave. She was like an anthropologist! Or an archaeologist in a way too. She was interested in the human world and their culture, their artefacts and what they were for.

    • @warizoh

    To be fair, Atlantica had an entire population of merfolk and Ariel had 6 older sisters that shared a room and a huge section of the royal palace. But she preferred to explore the greater sea, collect treasures from the surface, and theorize the purpose and fuction of surface world items to better understand humans. She's basically an anthropologist. She also loved music and loved to dance. Honestly, pop culture has a lot of bad takes on the 1989 movie. Especially when you add in the Little Mermaid animated series and the two direct-to-video sequels which fleshed out her character even more.

    • @safirestudio

      Yeah the only thing that sticks of the criticisms is that she was overly boy crazy/love at first sight situation. Other than that Ariel has plenty of her own interests

    Ariel in the original movie, as much as here, is an explorer. She doesn’t just go after the guy out of nowhere, it is her push, her last drop. It’s the one thing that brought her that much closer to the world she loved and wanted to learn more about.

    • @ejbell

    “ariel had no interests of her own” her ballad, her missing the concert, the strained relationship with her father, her massive collection in her grotto, the whole reason she ever caught ursula’s attention, literally the entire plot, etc were because of her sense of adventure and her interest in the human world 🥴

  • @InfernoMutant
    @InfernoMutant ปีที่แล้ว +102

    Ariel was a nerd for human things and the human world. She just had that interest. Her meeting Eric made her want to actually meet a human and interact, and then when she saved him, she did become infatuated. But she was interested in the human world far before Eric

    • @warizoh

    I completely disagree with what you said of the original. Ariel is one of the Disney princesses that has the most interests of her own. She sings a whole song talking about her interests and how she wants to explore them further, and she is so passionate about them that she is willing to defy her father to pursue them (the human world, not just Eric)
    So no, they don’t have anything to “improve” here and if they attempt that, they can seriously hurt the movie.

  • @benjib0yyy

    I’m kind of sick of hearing about how Ursula needed to be a drag performer. She was voiced by a woman in the original and while yes her look was inspired by drag, she was very much a woman and wasn’t played as anything else. Also, to be frank, having Ursula be a man in drag would of sank the movie faster than Prince Eric’s ship. I also think there would be so much backlash during the parts where she turns into a human… she’s a man pretending to be a woman trying to marry prince eric. Eric is clearly straight, so I think that would not be a good look for the community. That’s almost like date rape and predatory behavior I don’t think we need to pile on to the lgbt community as they’ve had enough drama with that already.

    I love the original cartoon. Here, there are some dodgy moments of acting. Particularly "A man was drowning, I had to save him" was horribly delivered, that was the best take? And when she's waving her arms in Ursula's magical smoke was also delivered horribly. I don't know why Scuttle couldn't have been a normal seagull like in the cartoon, but I can live with it. Sebastian just looks weird...

  • @theartistjoshbeames

    Grace, I know you’re a Disney fan but a lot of your comments about the animated versions are pretty offensive to those of us who work in animation. To call the live actions more sophisticated or to say more people can enjoy the live action versions is like pretty insulting. especially when these live action remakes literally copy scene for scene. they do nothing original. they steal from the artists and storytellers who made these stories relevant. sophisticated they are not.

    • @DavidM_10
      @DavidM_10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd also argue that making these live-action adaptations conform, precisely, to the dictates of current-year, Hollywood-endorsed, feminism makes them less sophisticated, not more. They go from being honest examinations of the female condition to being repetitive, singalong sermons on what a woman should want and should be in 2023.

    • @DavidM_10
      @DavidM_10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And it's also true that creating a story from scratch is far harder (and therefore more praiseworthy) than copying a story and applying a few tweaks and flourishes here and there. That's why so many people are critics, and so few people, comparatively, are great novelists and screenwriters.

Taking away the plus size aspect of Ursula by casting someone like Gaga would’ve been a HUGE misstep
    Also the reason why aquariums look so packed with fish is because fish are jammed into a tank, let’s try not to glorify aquariums which are filled with their own problems, if you were to swim in the ocean it wouldn’t be populated like an aquarium would, even shots from the animated movie aren’t populated in that way

Belle, on the other hand, was seeking to escape the provincial life of the small village by reading books. She enjoyed reading for the purpose of escapism. Ariel was fascinated with the human world.
