Not unlike present day Ukraine vs. Russia, most Spaniards rejected French rule and fought a bloody war to oust them. The “Coalition” led by the Brits provided whatever supplies they could get to the Spanish, while the Spanish guerrillas destroyed vast numbers of Napoleon's troops. According to Wikipedia, the war on the peninsula lasted until the Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation. In June 1812, Napoleon set out with a massive army on an invasion of Russia and reached Moscow in September 1812. But could not stay because all resources to supply the army had been destroyed by the tsarists (In Russia it is known as the “Patriotic War”). In Spain, in 1812-1814, a combined army led by Wellesley was able to defeat the remaining elements of the French forces (Salamanca, Madrid, Bayonne…).
