Grumman TBM Avenger - Flying facts Series

The Grumman Avenger was a US naval carrier based torpedo bomber or anti submarine aircraft with major contributions to winning the sea battles of the Second World War. It saw action with both the US and Royal Navies in the Pacific/Atlantic war zones and shared credit with sinking the two super-battleships Yamato and Musashi.
Avengers were produced in large numbers and designated TBF or TBM depending on who built them eg TBF= Torpedo Bomber Grumman or TBM = Torpedo Bomber General Motors. Whilst a legend of WWII the avenger remained in service post war for a while and then transitioned to a range of civil purposes.
