Xanthi, a city of 60 thousand #residents, is located in #Thrace, near the border with #Bulgaria, in northeastern Greece. Xanthi lies 200 km east of #Thessaloniki and only 53 km northeast of Kavala, through the #Egnatia highway, while it is served by the “Alexander the Great” international #airport near Kavala. Xanthi town boasts a multicultural character, reflecting its #Ottoman, #Byzantine, and #Greek #heritage.
It is said that its name derives from #Xanthe, one of the #Amazons - famous female #warriors - that ruled the region, according to #legend.
Amphitheatrically built on the foot of #Rhodope mountain chain, the city is divided by the #Kosynthos River, into the west part, where the old and the modern town are located, and the east part that boasts a rich natural #environment.
