persona 4 kiwami looks great 🔥🔥🔥 thanks for showcasing this mod! I think funny enough this is the first direct video comparison out there I'm aware of besides the initial trailer; we've been working on getting some comparison videos out but it's pretty cool to compare all the versions side by side, because I actually never did that myself. it's clear with areas like Heaven where the mod runs into limitations, but otherwise I'm glad it's managed to be so closely comparable overall.
Thank you and everyone else for the hard work you put into the mod! I had a lot of fun doing the comparisons and I'm extremely impressed by what you all were able to accomplish given the tools you had to work with. Looking forward to seeing what more you all have in store!
Part of me feels like it'd be better if Void Quest kept the over saturated look with minimal fog, so that it could feel that much more out of place and game-y. Maybe even up it to making the blackness in the distance of the corridors a sharp blocky cutoff instead of the soft shadowy fade out along the edges. Literal void, like a classic first person screen-by-screen dungeon crawler. Of, course, that'd be taking a personal artistic license instead of using/restoring elements from the existing versions (short of just keeping the Golden look there, having the mod skip over it intentionally, since Golden is already pretty close to what I'm saying).
Colored fog works thematically. It’s quite literally an overarching theme dyed to the colors of what’s currently relevant. Also, the green fog in Naoto’s dungeon is probably more “toxic fog” than “military” when considering the whole mad scientist’s laboratory theme.
P4 despite a cheerful mood, in the original really knows how to tone down the contrast in the dungeons to make dungeon crawling is serious and not the cheerful vibe it has outside the TV world....The best part would be everytime after they rescue a team member, the environment would be bright and glossy like Golden
Honestly, same. I don't even like modern persona. Why am I here enjoying this comparison? It's fun to hear people talk about things they're excited about I guess
The fog in vanilla P4’s dungeons does so much for the overall aesthetic and mood that P4G lacks, imo. It feels more creepy and ominous, and definitely gives a heightened sense of danger. Especially in Yukiko’s dungeon, where the Midnight Channel is still a new concept. It feels like a mysterious, somewhat eldritch world. P4G just… doesn’t quite capture that.
I think the greasiest improvement this mod has as of right now is the battle arenas in the original they had almost to no fog leading to it making you feel like you teleport to a different place and it was always a pet peeve of mine even when I didn’t know what the original looked like. The mod overall makes it feel like it’s an actual battle taking place in the dungeon by adding the fog back, if possible I would love to see even more of the atmosphere from the original to be carried over with the original backgrounds.
The only battle arena that didn’t really change that much is the one in Heaven. In fact, the original P4 fog effects ironically make the battle stage look even MORE clear.
@@hwtvi3466 I feel heaven is the only arena that can realistically be clear, it’s such a big departure from all the other dungeons Locale and theming vise that there’s an actual case arena’s being more clear
Seeing Heaven's differences between p4g unmodded, modded, and OG, really blows my mind about this mod. The modded and OG really cements the name of the level. You are literally going through the clouds in Heaven to save Nanako
This is so interesting! I played so much persona 4 on the ps2 but never noticed just how different the atmosphere of the game feels. It's so noticable side by side
Now, we just need a enhanced animations, higher fidelity and quality models, sound overhauls, and, if someone is crazy, stylization like in P3R and P5R but with a P4G twist. Lastly, somene is going to make upscaled 4K assets because...reasons....
I literally was searching for a P4G mod that would overhaul the graphics to make it more like the vanilla game the other day... I couldn't believe I didn't find anything about it! So glad to know now that there IS something coming, I will wait patiently until is finished to relieve in some way my truest dear memories of P4 in the PS2
I love the look of the older Version, it has a certain flair I can´t describe. And the new look of the Steam version is just good BUT DAMN after 120 hours I know what I need to get for the Steam version now
As an overall gameplay experience, Golden is absolutely the way to play Persona 4. But a part of me always preferred the PS2 original because of the moodier visuals and atmosphere. Really hope this mod winds up being completed and can restore the moodier feeling of places like Yasogami High and the streets of Inaba, because although they still look great in Golden and the tone it was going for, I just prefer the moodier vibe the whole game goes for in the PS2 original
I wish I played on PC so I could take advantage of this mod lol. That said, I'm actually gonna say that cutting back the fog for Golden in specifically dungeon traversal was probably a good call. My bet is that it was primarily done to let us see enemies sooner. The dungeons of 4 are a lot more cramped than 3's were so there's not a lot of room to go for or avoid an ambush. My guess is they wanted players to have as much leeway to see the enemies as possible to avoid getting jumped by a Shadow you just couldn't see because of the fog.
You totally opened my eyes with the comparison, I played Persona 4 years back on my ps2 and just recently tried Persona 4 Golden on PC, of course i enjoyed golden a lot but i always had like a subtle feeling that something is missing, never would i expect it would be the fog, the OG Persona 4 fog has so much charm to it i cant believe i miss it!

I've recently got a first-gen PS3 up and running and was considering what games to get for it and thought I might pick up P4. While I don't doubt the PS2 emulators we have today, this mod gives a perfect opportunity for me to compare em (although shooting down to 480i output with an even smaller internal resolution will be an experience lol). I hope to see some side-by-sides soon, otherwise I may as well make the videos myself with this much power in my hands. Also a fellow Purple enjoyer, what's good.
I got Persona 4 on PS2 and have the means to record the footage for it, but for the sake of my sanity I just used an emulator so I could download saves for it and do the comparisons easier. I do recommend playing the native version over the emulated version! Purple gang rise up 🆙
Super interesting. Hearing the music and watching this kinda makes me want to play P4G again (even though I have already done so 4x). I might wait for my physical Switch copy and play through again there...
Ohhhh, so that's why I thought the game did not look that good on pc. And now that I think about it Silent hill 2 has the same kind of problems with the fog on it's pc version.
What's with PS2 fog adding so much atmosphere to everything? It feels like a PS2 Silent Hill games situation, you remove the fog and nothing looks right anymore.
It's mainly because it was used as a tool to push the boundaries of what was possible for a lot of games at the time. Stuff is hidden behind fog to hide stuff rendering in the distance or what have you, so if you take the fog away it makes the whole atmosphere seem kinda... dead in a lot of cases, because the game was designed around the fog being present. Best example is GTA San Andreas. The map is honestly kinda small, but the fog makes it seem absolutely massive, and it also makes going from say Los Santos to San Fierro feel like more of a journey and more realistic. Didn't mean to yap so hard but I'm a nerd so y'know
What I wish they could do with this mod: Bring back the original shuffle time, however that may not be possible. Bring back the screen effect, I know they removed it because most young people from nowadays have no idea what the aesthetic of the OG P4 was trying to do. But I think it's the best. Bring back the textures for backgrounds, I think the Ps2 version did the best trick ever: The textures are low poly, but the thick fog around them make them feel so much more alive while P4G crispness on the backgrounds for Inaba can be jarring. I also wish they could fix the AI bugs Atlus never Fixed.
"the best dungeon of persona 4; heaven" i wouldnt know, i plowed through it like the fist of an angry god at fierce and cataclysmic speeds for reasons...
this mod looks awesome, i’m excited to see it progress. i recently replayed p4g on my vita and i loaded up my old ps2 save of the original, which was near the end of the game where inaba is all foggy, and was amazed how gritty and gross the fog looked in the original lol
After playing p4 for a very long time since the release. Golden really saved my eyes. I love the og but. Golden make it more enjoyable for me(graphic wise)the fog in the dungeon is nice from the og. Nice mod btw.
I recently beat the game again on the PS4 P4G port on PS5. It looked really good. It would be awesome if they remade the game like they did with P3R because those modern character models and arranged OSTs were fire.
Having only played Golden on PC, I think the original looks so much better, even with the lower resolution and rougher 3D models. Using this mod is a no-brainer.
I hope the mod has customization because I like some parts from Golden and the original, however I may just still use the normal golden version because I have trust issues that I made give my computer a virus (btw - I not saying it’s does, I just saying that I am a very paranoid person)
but will it bring back that effect when entering boss battles where the screen would spin and warp with the saturation turned up 2000%? i always loved that effect especially when fighting shadow rise
Now I wanna try og p4. I mean, I have a ps2, I might as well. I don't like playing on PC. I completed Golden 3 times in PsVITA, so yeah, good mod too bad it's PC only
I never noticed how several dungeons in P4G just had black fog and now it looks so lame, especially on a big monitor/tv instead of a handheld. But Heaven though. The PS2 looks amazing. The depth of the fog and the texture smearing makes it feel really dream-like. I hope the mod or another mod changes it more to better replicate that feel.
I love the PS2 graphics, I'm so excited man I can't express how much depth they add to the game! Hidden truth, mystery, lies, a foggy dark atmosphere combined with the vibrant friendship of people who struggle with their mentality every day and want to find the truth through the thick fog. Glasses in the original version do not correct vision much, because they are in search, this is logical.
Now that I look at it its true, i never played golden, only the original on PS. The whole town felt a bit off, in a good way. I interpreted it as a way to express the MC's discomfort with being in a new town that is effectively a mystery to him. And, well, people were DYING, it felt appropriate for the dungeons to have a bit of gloom to them.
Coming from vanilla, Ive always felt that Golden's colour were off to me. I never noticed that they nerfed the fog in the overworld but I do feel the difference. I like the ps2 look better probably cause its what I started with but also it also looks old which fits persona 4 setting
Actually, I think the PS2 aesthetic works better specifically for the dungeons and less so for the overworld, as the tone of P4G is much brighter and colorful. As someone who's played both versions a ton though, they both have their charms.
Golden objectively looks worse with the lack of fog and proper shadowing like in this scene 2:20 which looks horrendously bad in comparison to the original.
I think this games time management is a lot more manageable than p3s because of its book system. I read more books I get more points on my social stats so the social stats raise quicker. Unlike freaking p3 (my favorite game but it has flaws) where it takes all freaking day to rank up my academics lol
Black fog makes more sense to me. Colored fog is silly when it fades. Plus it was only strong because of ps2 weaker hardware. Stuff like power lines gone because of the low res of the vita. Honestly they could've put it back in for pc
As a persona gamer who played P4 before P4G, I really like what this mod does. I love the OG P4, I REALLY hope they bring back the OG title screen. It is MUCH MORE superior compared to golden!!!
Ps2 emulation on native resolution is still better for nostalgia The mod make the outside backgrounds very nice tho so it's a must have but I'll always use pcsx2 for P4
Persona 5 was my first Persona game, and the battle system felt bad to me. I'm sure the game is good, but not having the Baton Pass felt weird. I'm glad the combat in Persona 3 Reload is more like Persona 5, so I'm hoping for a Persona 4 Re-Air to do the same.
It’s like, omg. They ported from a psp title 😱😱😱😱 no but seriously, this was a issue with the ps vita game and tons of people where mad that they didn’t release the Og ps2 game instead of a portable title. The same with Perosna 3 portable being ported than FES
Its clearly visible *lol* why they removed the fog as much as they did. While it fits the story, it takes away from the sheen and shine to the games moments that aren't supposed to be entirely gloomy.
The Vita probably also played a factor into why they tonned the fog down. They probably wanted the game to look as sharp as possible on that small screen.
You can still have good moments in life in a gloomy scenery, IMO it adds to the setting that they're still having fun and being dumb teens in a dark scenario.
Denuvo doesn't hurt p4g at all, it's a port of a vita game it runs absolutely fine. Denuvo only actually causes problems for performance if it's implemented poorly and atlus is usually pretty good at that
@@KatelynTeaFor me it’s not really just performance and the fact that it has a lot more system access than it probably should, it’s also that it kind of kills game preservation on PC. If you look at older DRMs from the late 90s and early 2000s, such as Games For Windows Live, there were many games that relied on them, and became completely unplayable without heavy modification after the servers for those old DRMs shut down. It’s not really a problem for P4G specifically since that game is pretty easily accessible, but there are a lot of games that use Denuvo that would likely similarly become unplayable if the servers were to ever go down. That’s the main reason I avoid Denuvo, even on games that perform well with it. I know these games will mostly be accessible on consoles for years on end, but for the PC game market, Denuvo, and software like it are the killers of game preservation
it wasnt obvious to me but looking at it side by side golden butchered 4s original style, maybe it wasnt as notable with the vitas small screen but playing on pc the cleaner hd look is sure to bug me, gonna miss the gausian blur and noise filters
persona 4 kiwami looks great 🔥🔥🔥

It’s interesting how the ps2 aesthetic is seemingly so hard to recreate on PC ports. The same is true with GTA San Andreas and Final Fantasy X.
It is pretty interesting honestly now that you mention it.
PS2 has some weird as heck architecture
P4 lost its PS2 fog when going to golden because of the engine change
Tbf, Golden was ported from the PS Vita, not PS2
Is this a "designed for CRT display and it's hard to replicate on modern flat-screen" situation?

Black fog makes more sense to me. Colored fog is silly when it fades. Plus it was only strong because of ps2 weaker hardware. Stuff like power lines gone because of the low res of the vita. Honestly they could've put it back in for pc
As a persona gamer who played P4 before P4G, I really like what this mod does. I love the OG P4, I REALLY hope they bring back the OG title screen. It is MUCH MORE superior compared to golden!!!
i cant play p4g. I keep getting the error 0xc000007b. tried fixing but simply didnt work and i gave up
Ps2 emulation on native resolution is still better for nostalgia
The mod make the outside backgrounds very nice tho so it's a must have but I'll always use pcsx2 for P4
5:27 "The Kiwami Version" lmao 💀
After beating golden yea the original p4 game on ps2 I believe looks so much better like how
Its clearly visible *lol* why they removed the fog as much as they did. While it fits the story, it takes away from the sheen and shine to the games moments that aren't supposed to be entirely gloomy.
Which is why it's cool both versions exist! Depending on what mood you're in you might prefer one over the other.
The Vita probably also played a factor into why they tonned the fog down. They probably wanted the game to look as sharp as possible on that small screen.
You can still have good moments in life in a gloomy scenery, IMO it adds to the setting that they're still having fun and being dumb teens in a dark scenario.
Wonder if they could make a mod to bring back the flying gas ball shadows in the dungeons
There is a mod to bring that back actually! It replaces the powerful red shadows if I remember correctly
Awesome
Alright
I like the added fog, but I don't like the contrast adjustments. I prefer Golden's more saturated colors.
you should try this mod plus the no tv scanlines mod, the game really looks amazing with that combo tbh
I really like the feel that the scan lines add to the game but maybe I’ll try it out one day! Thanks for the recommendation!
@@YandereGogeta it helps with recording/streaming as well, the scanlines can sometimes fuck up the bitrate
someone needs to mod the p5 fan ost song ''voice within'' into the rise dungeon and it would be perfect
the OG atmosphere gives us some strange feeling.. not that i say it's better than the Golden, goodness no, i love the Golden too...
This actually makes P4 darker in plot and aestethic.
More suiting for the plot.
mann! that's look too good. I don't know that P4 for ps 2 have effect like that. Definitely try this ! but how to install this mod ?
You can use the Reloaded-II mod manager, or the Aemulus mod manager to install. I personally use Reloaded-II since you can install mods with one click
@@YandereGogeta alright, thank you!
Fog in japanese games are always the best
the ps2 emulation has no scan crt lines?
Awesome as this looks, I still wouldn’t wanna buy the PC version of P4G as long as it has Denuvo
I know these games will mostly be accessible on consoles for years on end, but for the PC game market, Denuvo, and software like it are the killers of game preservation
the only thing that can let us play a game that we beat 10 to 20x or more is nude mod thats the only matter to us gamers
it wasnt obvious to me but looking at it side by side golden butchered 4s original style, maybe it wasnt as notable with the vitas small screen but playing on pc the cleaner hd look is sure to bug me, gonna miss the gausian blur and noise filters
Ill play persona 4 when it looks like 5
