@@Mr.JayWay you must file a form 8949 to get back your losses on stocks( make sure that is not wash sale). You can get maximum $,3000. a year for your loss. So even you loss you also must filextax return to get your money back.

Don't forget the state taxes as well. In California the gain is considered a part of your income. So essentially your capital gains tax is federal rate + state if applicable + niit if applicable. For me the combined three comes to 28%...

    YOOO WHAT ABOUT THESE THINGS------
    short term cap. gains numbers?
most of us have invested within the past year and would like to know repercussions on pulling out early, also to get small coins you need to use ETH, so are you taxed on buying eth and then swapping for said alt coin?? what about losing money or breaking even? what if you only lose money because of fees? can you write off fees and losses?
appreciate you talking to us like we are 5th grade but missed a ton of important info.
its would be super helpful to you to start a question poll and make a video based on those common questions.
stocks generally dont move around as much as crypto so any clarification to help us deal with uncle sam will help.
thank you for the helpful content

Thanks for the great video Brian!
A question that I have about determining long term vs short term tax rates is what if you buy a stock on a consistent basis? For instance, you buy 1 share of a company every month for 5 years. At the end of 5 years you sell half of your shares (30) for a profit. Are your gains subject to long term tax because you purchased the first 30 shares more than a year before selling or are they subject to short term tax because your most recent purchase was a month ago?
I’d really appreciate if you address this question in a future video because I’ve never been able to find the answer. Thank you a ton!

    • @tonynart9609
      @tonynart9609 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Marc,
Most stock investments are scaled on a first in first out basis. So when you go to sell you shares it will calculate which ones you bought first and will only tax you based on that gain.
      Ex.1
You bought your first stock at 5 dollars, after five years your stock is worth 10 dollars. When you sell it will be long term capital gains on 5 dollars in gains per share.
      Ex. 2
You kept buying at 1 share per month and by the third year you’re buying shares for 7 dollars a share. At year five when you sell your 30 shares, you will sell the first share for 5 dollars in gains and your 30th share for 3 dollars in gains. Both are long term since they are held for more than a year.
      Ex. 3
You decide to sell all 60 shares, your first 4 years, ie your first 48 shares will be taxed at the long term capital gains rate. Your last 12 will be taxed as short term capital gains. Luckily you’ve probably made more from your early shares compared to you later shares. You might’ve made 5 dollars a share in your first year, but probably only 1 dollar in gains for your fifth year. Therefore you’d only pay for 1 dollar in gains per share in short term capital gains.
