The one thing I’ll say is, Hogan is notorious for let’s say “Not being Honest at the best of times.” I would tend to believe what the Rock says much more than Hogan. The Rock and Steve Austin were way over, more than Hogan had been in years and Arguably more than Hogan was in his Prime. Let’s talk about what you did with Shawn Hogan or how you screwed the Undertaker by lying that he hurt you. How about all the guys you buried and how you never really passed the torch and held on to the title for way to long in both companies. How you were still going over on guys like Vader when the crowd was booing you as a face. How you did Randy wrong over and over. How you changed finish’s to protect yourself and how you used your Creative Control card to keep yourself at the top instead of helping build younger wrestlers up. How you brought all your buddies in to WCW to take care of them over guys like Sting and Vader.

This is the power of hulkamania. 2002 I was 26 year old NYPD cop. The day of WM 18 I was working at ground zero. I had a particularly bad day. Saw ALOT of awful things that day. Where we were digging we came across ALOT of remains. Of victims. So after my tour was over. I went home and watched WM mostly for this match. For the 25 minutes this match was on. I was 12 years old again. And put the awful things I saw that day out of. My mind . that is the power and greatness of the character hulk hogan created. Thank you hulk.

I was at Wrestlemania 18 and the sound in the SkyDome from the fans was something I've never heard since. It wasn't an audible noise, it was just a pressure from 80k people screaming in unison. The electricity in the building was incredible and the hype for Hogan was unreal. It was something I am so glad I was a part of and the ticket from that event sits in a frame at my desk at work every day.

That alternating “slow look left, slow look right” spot they did at the beginning of the match might be the greatest moment in Wrestlemania history.
Name a match that had that kind of mixed frenzy before the bell. I remember watching it with friends and we all recognized it was more than just history, something very very special was happening.
The “Rocky Sucks!” chant re-emerging at that point of his popularity can’t properly be described with words.

When people talk about how big Stone Cold and the Rock got, they forget that, when Hogan came out on Raw after WM18, he got the longest ovation we had seen on live TV...ever. His Hall of Fame induction got much longer and louder applause than either Attitude Era guy. Hogan joining the nWo almost put Vince out of business (were it not for Turner/Time Warner, it very well could have). Hogan got the biggest pop at Wrestlemania XXX between the three of them. Hogan was booked as the heel for WM18 while Rock was booked as the face, yet the crowd was about 80/20 Hogan as the match went on, and in their subsequent alliance-turned-feud double cross. Stone Cold may have the box office record for ratings and PPV buys, and Rock went on to have a monstrous movie career, but Hogan did it before them, did it while they were running, and his name still carries that weight. Regardless of how awful of a human being he may be in real life, regardless of how many lies he tells (and let's be real, ALL wrestlers lie to put themselves over, even after retirement), he is the biggest star in the history of the business.
This Wrestlemania would basically be the end of all great things in wrestling. Yes, great matches happened after, and there were probably PPV buys that were bigger, but it was the culmination of wrestling from the 80's and 90's, meeting in one place, with both guys putting on a great show in front of a crowd that was absolutely on fire. It had that same electricity as WM3, or WM6 between Hogan and Warrior. The moves themselves weren't going to matter, because these two had the crowd. It only would have been bigger had it been Austin vs. Hogan. But wrestling after that would slide down from the zenith, and it has never quite recovered since.
SIDE NOTE: No, John Cena doesn't come close. Just because he came up in the internet era and has become a meme to a lot of people doesn't mean anything. He was a forced push in the PG era that squashed a lot of emerging talent to pitiful PPV buys, and was overrated by Meltzer and others who did ratings systems for matches that began during Cena's time. During the Monday Night Wars, Cena would have been a mid-card guy, nothing more.

I don't say this lightly, but the closest thing I know of to what he's talking about is when 2 jazz musicians go at it. The changes, the tempo, the feel, the history... you take all that and it just informs what you're going to do in the moment. If somebody in the crowd sneezes, one guy picks up on it and the whole thing goes down a different path. It really is art, and it's a totally unique art where 2 people have to be totally locked in. And only a handful have "it."

This interview is genius... Rock's explanation of that decision to "take the bump" as a heel really did explain EXACTLY how I felt watching this match the first time. And as a kid in the 80's, Hogan was my childhood hero second only to my Pops. So, hearing his point of view made it just that much more special. This video was a real treat.

This is the old Hogan who had to hit rock bottom, no pun intended, and it made him a better man. Unfortunately the young Hogan lived a crazy life of drugs, alcohol, and back stabbing outside of the ring. I guess some people handled fame and the fear of losing top spot differently. One thing for sure was that he could put asses in seats, sell merchandise, and blow up a crowd with 5 wrestling moves. With all that being said it was good to see him back with Vince and the WWF/WWE. Hogan came full circle and everyone's journey is unique!

Hogan/Rock at WM 18 was one of the greatest matches of all time, however, it wasn't because the match was a technical masterpiece or because of what they did in the ring that night. It was because the fans in Toronto were absolutely living for that match. Watch that match on mute and tell me how many exciting spots you see.
