      Agreed. I'm even warm & inviting to newbies out on Wal-Mart bikes. Mainly because I was once in their shoes. When I was still on my $80 Wal-Mart special, I met a few other riders at my local trails (all riding Trek Fuel EXs). They never once criticized my bike, but instead encouraged me to keep riding. My skills improved and eventually I rode it til it broke. After that, I got my first "real" bike.

      It really depends on what's going on. Letting people ride shitty bikes on dangerous trails is just asking for trouble. Not having money for a proper bike is no excuse to continue riding improper bikes on dangerous public trails, they should stick to the easier proper trails for that particular bike. Otherwise, they are only serving to jeopardize the trails if they get hurt because their bike fails. Now... READ THIS AGAIN! Because I know everyone is just going to hear "shitty bikes shouldn't be on any trails" and that's not what I said. They should stick to the proper trails for the bike they have or go ride on private property where their actions won't affect the public. But don't jeopardize everyone elses fun by being an idiot on an shitty bike on dangerous trails.

I know that look you talk about because I got it in my first few races until I started winning so it proves that you can still be a good rider even without the 10k carbon bikes that your parents bought you.

      It really depends on the trails in question! If you're riding highly technical and rough trails, some bikes just aren't going to hold up. What bothers me are discussions about safety equipment. Some skilled rider might shred a trail pretty hard with only some knee pads and an open helmet, when anotherone uses a fullface, eventually a vest too, and gets overtaken by many. Don't make fun of them. Keep in mind that some people need protection to be confident enough to step out of their comfortzone ridingwise and evolve. Another possibility, the rider has kids, a responsible job or an important appointment coming up and has to minimize the risk of injuries.

    In the Moab area some visitors seem to have problems realizing, understanding, or adhering to the following (no particular order):
    1.) Please do not ride trails that are wet/muddy/snowy/etc. the groves made in the soft desert soil/mud harden into concrete-like tire ruts, which are a lot of work for Trailmix (our trail builders) to fix, and are a safety hazard for beginners and experienced riders alike. And riding around mud puddles causes damage to the desert. Please see # 3 below. Go and get your pump on the slick rock if it's wet out.
    2.) Please yield to horses, hikers, and uphill riders. The trails in Moab are on public land (BLM, USFS, etc.), and many are designated multi use. Also many trails are two-way traffic where uphill riders ALWAYS have the right of way.
    3.) Please do nut cut corners. The desert soil/crust is fragile, and if you ride of trail the damage you cause can take many decades to recover, if at all.
    4.) Please do not have external speakers playing your music. The music you love, might be shit to others, and the sounds of nature are way better anyway.
    5.) Please pack it in and pack it out. I.e., don't litter! In fact, when you see litter from others, pick it up and pack it out.
    6.) Regarding the point in the video about not having the right equipment to fix a flat: Please remember that some traveling riders might be renting, and the shop may have neglected to include the right equipment. A beginner or a really excited traveler might not know or just forget to ask. It is also possible to have two flats in the same day on the same ride. So yes, everyone should be prepared, but also everyone who has the ability to help should help. We are after all on the same team.
    Happy and safe riding to all!

Annoying for the rest who have to spend half their precious weekend helping a mate fix and fettle. Shit happens to all of us, I just mean when someone knows their bike needs work, but leaves it till the trailhead or mid-ride to do it.

      I was chilling in the parking lot finishing off a sandwhich and was watching this group of riders who were meeting up. Two of the guys pretty much drove up and practically jumped on their bikes, ready to go while one of the guys was draggin his ass doing everything in turtle mode. He took forever changing out his shoes and socks and shirt and then has to fiddle with his bike, putting on his wheel, checking the pressures, fiddling with his seat, just on and on while chatting with some other guy that rolled up ready to go. Yep, he was "that guy" holding everyone else up. That kind of shit drives me insane!! When I agree with somebody to be on the trail at 6... that means "ON THE TRAIL", not in the parking lot and taking another 30 minutes to prepare.

    When I'm out on my MTB, no matter how much fun I'm having or how fast I'm going, I always, ALWAYS slow to near walking speed when I encounter hikers, walkers, trail runners etc. It's easy to get back up to speed again.

    Another thing, if you see someone has crashed, stop and make sure they're okay because I wouldn't want to be that guy, left alone. This one time, my mom and I were driving and her car bogged and died in the middle of a very busy intersection and wouldn't start back up. At least 100 people drove by and didn't help and this one guy finally stopped and helped push the car and put a road flare (It was really dark out too). He told us his late wife said: "If you see someone in need of help, help them because you never know how bad their situation is." This has stuck with me and I apply it to driving, riding and even hiking. Don't be that guy that leaves someone stranded, especially if they're hurt.

      The problem with calling “on the left/right” is that they didn’t hear you coming so you surprised them. They have to make a split-second decision which way to go, and what they actually heard was “[mumble, oh wait, somebody’s talking to me, I’d better pay attention]eft!” from which they’re supposed to figure out that you said “On your left” which means “Please move right.” No wonder they go the wrong way.

The sound of a lot of rear hubs make can spook a horse and get a rider injured. Be nice to non-bikers on the trail. MTBing is inherently dangerous, don't make it dangerous for others!

  • @jameswindsor5470

    The thing that has absolutely annoyed me the most was one of the first time I was out mountain biking. I went out with one of my buddies, and we were on the DTE Foundation Energy Trail in Michigan. I'm riding around with some bontrager shoes, and some of the Lycra I owned at the time, and I am at the top of the biggest climb on the trail, and I notice that my Shimano SPD cleats are loose on, and I am having trouble getting unclipped. (I was a pretty big roadie at the time, clipless made more sense than flats.) I am at the top of the trail, tightening up my cleats, my buddy doesn't notice and powers down the flowy downhill, and a group of guys on $5k carbon full-suspension bikes come flying by... I get my cleats tightened up after a few minutes and I come to the bottom of the trail: My buddy and them were commenting on how shit my gear was, and that If I hit any jumps my XC shoes were going to break. They also were keen to inform me that real mountian bikers don't wear clipless pedals and that I was wearing the wrong kind of helmet.
    I get really annoyed when people, whom obviously have enough money to spend on the latest and greatest tell me my gear isn't good enough.

    • @MotoAtheist
      @MotoAtheist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had to tell plenty of people their bikes, shoes and whatever else weren't good enough, but I didn't do it with malice. It's a matter of me knowing the trails and what level of gear is needed to handle them and seeing somebody completely unprepared. Maybe these guys were trying to save you from a disaster. Clipless pedals can be insanely dangerous on plenty of mountain bike trails. Certain types of gear simply won't handle the level of abuse certain trails can place upon them and will either not protect you at all or actually break and be the cause of accidents. I obviously wasn't there to evaluate their tone, but this scenario isn't something completely unheard of.

    • @jameswindsor5470
      @jameswindsor5470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotoAtheist Well Buddy, I still rip the shit out of that trail on clipless pedals and and a full rigid single speed. I think they were just being dicks. Or they couldn't fathom someone doing it on an XC bike. Which in reality isn't really that unheard of.

    I had a fun case just this past weekend of two lycra fellas came flying up on me. They were only about a tire or two away from me, which had me not concentrating on the trail in front of me as tailgating is annoying (whether in a car or on the trail). I barely clipped a tree with my bars on a small turn, luckily not enough to wreck, but I swerved off the trail immediately to let them pass. They were "friendly" about it, but I never come up on someone that close. It was a green trail that has a blue loop that comes off it. Just like with skiing/boarding, you yield to those in front of you and don't ride their ass. There are a lot of young and inexperienced riders on green trails... don't make them more anxious by tailgating.

    When I lived in San Antonio there was an extremely fun area called Parkwood. Mostly a freeride and downhill area, some of the XC riders did use it, but it had some blind spots. It was rather customary to announce when you were dropping in just in case there was someone you couldn't see and hadn't heard yet. In big enough groups we'd post spotters who would signal if something happened.

They didn't see me and I (and the horse) didn't seen them until they were on us. I heard a clang clang and I think it was chain slap. Suddenly the horse just bolted for an open field and I know what it feels like to be a jockey in the starting gate. And then they were gone! I agree with this video some people really need to understand.
    I dislocated a finger when someone stopped at the reciever of a step down jump. My mates and I tried to do a train on this specific jump when all of a sudden there was this father who was scolding his son at the reciever. So when we saw them it was a little too late so we tried our best to avoid crashing into them. I turned to the right before taking off so I slammed my fist on a tree but landed the bike safely, I actually told them that its dangerous to stop in the middle of a trail specially near a jump. Never really realized that I dislocated a finger. While I was hanging with my mates I just noticed a lot of people was staring at my finger. So my right hand ring finger was pointing at almost 45°. I panicked popped it back went home and went my doctor to check it out. Thank God it wasn't that serious.

I was shouting and gesturing for them to move, well because it's my trail (so I thought), and as I was going past them one took a step back and knocked by pack just right which pushed me into a rut. I tried to manual out of the rut, but I was travelling at a good clip and I lost control. I went down hard and I ended up with major rock rash, plus I broke my derailleur hanger in the process. I learned a hard lesson that day, the trail does not belong to me.
