    Hi, I'm from the US and I never seen a Cortina before watching your videos, the Cortina is a good looking car, the front nose/grill is definitely a version of the US 1968/69 Ford Torino. Those 2.0 engines are great engines, back in the day over here in the US we had the Ford Pinto with the 2.0 engines, we would modify those engines and add a mustang 5 speed transmission and a set of 4.11 rear gears and have a good time. I'm definitely now a Cortina fan. As far as English cars, I always wanted a late 50's early 60's Triumph Harold. I always thought that was a good looking car.

      Back in the days of the early 70s I was an apprentice mechanic on three pounds seventeen shillings and sixpence a week for a 44 hour week . My employer at the time bought a mrk 3 GLS in electric blue with a white vinyl roof new . He brought it in to the workshop and we all had a good look at it , that's when it all started the misery for millions of motorists of the future! . The Pinto engine with a rubber cam drive engine which was the first I had seen but soon most manufacturers adopted this poor design not to mention poor cam shaft Lube spray bars blocking which was very common fault and the stupid design that the cylinder head had to be removed to change the damaged cam from the rear of the head ( If it was designed to be removed from the front the cost of repairs would have been 75% to the owner) . Then there was the constant changing of rear axle void bushes . It looked flash in its day compared to other cars on the road at the time but handled badly . I remember them well ........ cr#p .

      @@Theoriginalbigbrillo The Herald would have several reincarnations, 2 door Coupe, Estate, Sedan ( All 4 cyl 998cc to
      13/60 ) and the 6 cylinder Vitesse ( quad lamp ) in both mk1 & mk2 ( 1600cc & 2000cc ), came across a coupe in New Zealand 🇳🇿 that had the 2500cc from the much larger Triumph back in the late 80's by a travelling musician 😀

    Outstanding video this is! Over here in Holland we had not many of these Mk.3 Cortina’s. But we had the German equivelent, the Taunus and these were very popular. This Cortina had slightly different bodywork but technically the cars were quite identical. Afterwards, starting with the Mk.4 the bodywork of these Fords was identical. I owned three Taunus models. I wish I still had one!

    Fantastic video thanks. Loved Mk3s. I had a 1600, a 2000E and a 2000 estate - all manuals. I put a 5 speed type 9 from a wrecked Sierra in the estate. I'd love to have another. These days I run a 1500 Midget, but the Mk3 coke-bottle Cortina still looks awesome.

    Had exactly the same model albeit in mettalic green and a manual box. Same year and GXL. Was a fine car after the head gasket was replaced due to an oil leak at the front of the head and on the exhaust manifold side. Used to think it was the muts nuts but nonetheless I eventually traded it in for ........a TR7! No points for guessing which would be more valueable today :-)
    Good luck with the project.

    So glad you are keen to save a two door GXL, tried to view thru small screen, looks like GT console & satellite quad gauge set.
    Those front guards were always the first to rot.
    Save all the bright work & small under riders.
    I remember from my native New Zealand, those mk3 guards were cheap as chips new, about $120 nzl in the early 80's, whilst the mk2 viva, magnum & firenza ( from vauxhall nzl ) were $228 each.
    Those mk3 in two door were super rare, I think 2 doors may have been more common in south africa 🇿🇦
    The four door variant was also sold new from the factory in australia, except the pinto was accompanied by the inline 6 engine from the aussie larger Falcon.
    The displacement had two options 200ci ( 3300cc) and 250ci ( 4100cc).
    Incidentally, those two large falcon engines were also fitted to those late transit vans in aussie ( and nzl )
    Do you remember those little combined reverse lights / refectors mk 2 ) below the mk1 tail lights 1977-1983.
    Thanks for the video & trip down memory lane. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦💚🌎😄👌👍

    Lovely mate, was always my favorite motor. My first car was a four door 1600 N reg MK3 in metallic purple with the black vinyl roof. Started life as an XL but with lots of parts from scrap yards around London it was soon turned into a GXL. Had the intake manifold (adapted) and twin Webers from a Mk2 Lotus Cortina, a Piper cam and a 4-2-1 stainless exhaust manifold and exhaust. On top of that a five speed ZF gearbox which I got from god knows where. Went like a rocket but drunk petrol like I owned a North Sea rig. My Mum (god rest her soul) smashed it into the back of a parked transit and I swapped it at Curry motors for a new Mk2 Escort.

    Awesome Vid.. My first cars was a Ford Escort Mk1 I had an Orange basic model, the silver basic and then The Roman Bronze MK1 1300GT It had been customised and resprayed with Gold Rostyle wheels. But unfortunately caught fire and burned out. Some of the cross flow engines it was well known.. However this one was down to a Nikki Carb, All i can guess was a petrol pipe had split. I just recall driving along the road and flames behind the dashboard, was not long before it was engulfed.
    I loved that car, real shine, Recaro seats the whole lot gone. The only thing that survived was the stereo Equalizer booster, really weird the fire just burned around it. :)

    Loved our red Cortina 1972 2.0 L GXL with black vinyl roof and double headlights. My dad had it flat out 120 mph and I loved it, he gave it to me but being 14 was too young so was sold on. Still my dream car though, it has classic cool looks and lines and is quite mean.

      @AlanEvans789 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My dad had a white 2.0 XL 4 door, one of the later square headlight ones. First car I ever really drove, since his old Mk II I was sitting on his lap. Anyway at 14 I managed to get to drive it up the main runway of the former RAF North Weald. I got it up to about 90 but then started to over control it quite a lot. Got quite a swing on it before I got it slowed down and under control. Afterwards dad reckoned I was only a couple of seconds from rolling it over!

    From the U.S. Aaah! My favorite. Rover automobile, 75 miles of brake lines Pontiac engine fueled by Stewart Union carbs and LUCAS
    Melt o matic switches. One thing about the days I when attempted to repair British Leyland vehicles , we stayed busier than a one legged
    man in an ass kicking contest " Repair'em by Friday, Wrecker'em on Monday"
    We were the only shop for 100 miles that would work on them. Our world famous warranty was 5 feet or 5 seconds which ever
    came first and believe it or not 3% of the time we had to warranty for something stupid and all the car did was sit there for a few days ?
    I never said it was because the Brits couldn't engineer anything, they have engineered some of the geartest machines in history, but it was because, at the time, they carried planned obsolescense to far or would over engineer to the point it would fail in complexity or serviceability.

    Hi Pete, well done for going to that NEC RESTORATION SHOW with your latest project and your future project as it keeps the word CORTINA MK3 alive,firm and steady, as it looked like that if it wasn't for you to have braught down there the MK3 examples , there was gonna be no Cortina MK3's. It was astonishing watching Swampy in the rain,behind that wind screen, watching them chromed wipers working looked like a film from the 70's era for a while,it's a pity that the low loader driver didn't had a camera and did what you did PETE...... take some footage of Swampy driving on the high way fighting the water and winds, doing like you was doing to Bramble and the low loader carrying it, it would had been interesting to watch NOW FAMOUS SWAMPY driving in the rain from inside another vehicle,but that cabin sensation driving in the rain was enough for a MK3 Cortina Entusiast to watch that footage more than once, at least that's what I did, missed your air guitar Pete on this video, but for sure we'll watch it again in ep 13 ep 14, and off course like always some Cortina MK3 hunting.That's very interesting too.Anyway,can't wait for the next Project Ruby video

I aint scared to take swampy out, he does the miles !!!!!!!!! all the best from UK, Lancashire and we thank you here at Cortina City for all your kind replies and enthusiasm, and also for a heartfelt invitation to your island. i will be there

    Swampy looks cool, Pete! When is the restoration of Bramble the 2 door GXL going to be restored, and to what extent in comparison to Swampy?
    How many 2 door GXLs were produced originally, and how many survive on the road and on SORN?

    • @PeteCswampy
      @PeteCswampy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lee Faulkner Hi Lee, thanks again for watching the channel. I appreciate that and hope you found it fun to watch. OK, well at moment im rebuilding a 4 door GXL (ruby) the 2 door is a future project. I just wanted to get it out of that environment and get it back to my house so i could cover it up. Its a very very rare car. Heres the spec: 2 Door, Silver (VERY RARE), red interior (VERY RARE), Auto on a series one (VERY RARE), 2 door (rare), GXL, 2.0, its a rare care that has to be saved. Thats why i pulled it out. However its in a bad state. Not as bad as swampy but close. The bulkhead (hardest part) is good. I was very very suprised how solid it was around that area. Chassis rails have survived though have pinholes. All in all its all do-able, but it will be a 2-3 year job. Result will be incredible. THe car im working on at moment is going to be stupendous, its already looking really nice. Im not sure how many 2 door, auto, series one (1971), silver cars there are, especially with red interior. Im going to take a chance and say there are NONE left! ill take bets and say there are NONE !

      +Pete C I'm not a mechanical engineer myself, but have been a lifelong Mk3 fanatic. Around 1997 I was offered in a Mk3 club magazine a Mk3 Cortina GXL 2 door for sale which the owner claimed it was in Roman Bronze. I sadly couldn't get to look at or buy the car as it needed extensive restoration, I was at university then and didn't have the space for it. I hope the 2 door GXL wasn't scrapped.

      @Cascroft-lp6ir 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete C true, it's saveable but to be honest, it's not worth saving. I do love the car but the rear ach and sill was so bad, I though it needed a reshell. I can promise you that this is one hell of a restoration job, not as bad as that Black Cortina MK3 GT you found but it will probably take up to 4 years to restore

    • @PeteCswampy
      @PeteCswampy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +cascroft2011gaming i see what you are saying however theres somethign you need to know. its one of the rarest mk3. can you please name me a rarer mk3 than this? you want me to list the spec? Silver fox. GXL. series one. 2.0. Auto. Ruby. 2 door. errr just happens to be the rarest combination that ford made in the mk3 range. That aside i like difficult jobs. I love difficult jobs. I prefer difficult jobs. That is the challange, the journey, the story, the art, the skill, the project. up to 4 years? how do you calculate that? have you asked me? ill decide how long it takes.

      I think it’s a matter of choice.
      The brother had mk3 cortina never any problems with it,
      It always started on the first turn of the key,
      I thought at the time they were a bit heavy on the petrol when I got a loan of it,
      £10 wouldn’t get you very far but a really nice comfortable car for its time.

      Some parts of the country (UK) seem and can be depressing. Other parts, spectacular, I suppose on this film, with the weather and the general greyness of it all I agree. However I gotta say, theres other films I have uploaded showing spectacular scenery, lakes, and country villages, rolling green hills and just a beauty that the UK has, I promise that its not as droll as portrayed on here, although looking at the film I can see why you think so. I promise there are beautiful places everywhere, you just have to look out for em. A suggestion for you if you google 'cotswolds' (its a place in UK) just take a look, or lake district, that's just a few, I think that, its only the industrial and urban areas that when get covered in our CRAP WEATHER (I agree) it all looks a mess.....all the best
