Fun fact: ACE Team got their start before indie games by creating a Doom total conversion called Batman Doom in 1999 (and again in 2000 for advanced ports). It took extensive use of DeHackEd, a means of modifying the actor behaviour of Doom's entities by rearranging the original game's state data around.
Found your channel through your recent Maize video and was surprised to see anyone give such a fair and quite in-depth review on a game like that. Especially where story and characters are concerned and dissecting its sense of humor.
Was a very solid video! Really enjoyed listening through it yesterday while working on some drawings. Your Venn diagram and form of "rating"/way of measuring to what extent people may enjoy a game was interesting too.
Checked out your channel (otherwise I wouldn't be here) and it's a delight to see a video on Zeno Clash on here as well, also quite in-depth where mechanics, story and characters are concerned and your reasons for liking or disliking them. Again a really good video.
You've done your research on ACE Team and some lesser-known stuff, like the names of the big monsters, though still i'm curious if you know of the prequel in the world of Zenozoik known as Clash: Artifacts of Chaos that released in the earlier half of 2023. It's a really good game but sadly seems to have flown under the radar quite badly.
Would very much love seeing a video on that game of yours, but regardless of what games you'll be playing and videos you'll be making in the future, i wish you lot of good luck and fun on all of them.
Have a good one and take care.
Thanks so much! Clash: AoC and Zeno Clash 2 are on the list. I loved Zeno Clash 1 so I'd definitely be down to play the whole series.
Ah right. 2009's Zeno Clash, the game that made me finally pay attention to indie titles and lead me to The Deadly Tower of Monsters (must play) and Abyss Odyssey by the same team.
Can't thank the weird art style enough. For some reasons, ZC gave me vibes of those weird americans show with puppets/animatronics from the 90s I would sometimes catch glimpses of saturday morning as a kid; probably something with dinosaurs too, and in 2009/10 it was a necessary breath of fresh air in the videogame landscape of my overused Xbox 360.
Comfy video, was great for my nostalgia (damn, 14 years already ?) and brought back to mind games I really should get back to. Nice.
Adding 'Deadly Tower of Monsters' to the list. ZC, AO, and ACE's whole catalogue has really unique mechanics and art direction. Zeno Clash definitely made me a fan.
I remember Zeno Clash. Played it and the sequel
There's a prequel too from 2023!
The design is super creative, but i have never heard of it. Sad that it went completely under the radar.
