They can't handle that much mass, one rider of large size is still a struggle, feels like getting sucked down a drain pipe. (if you want to get super technical, they have the capacity to teleport with their offspring, as the newborn calves need to grow a little before they can do it themselves, so, anything larger than a young mammoth calf is too big)

@@zacharyweaver276 Oh man, I need that pixie howda now, in fact... its in the video, the mammoth with the two lanterns on its tusks, look on it's back and you will see a whole village. Truth is, the Mammoths often are experimented on, so yeah, you can get teleportation mutants who can rip a fully loaded galleon in half... teleportation itself is a devastating weapon. Or a mammoth that can simply teleport its mass plus a bit more... or the equivalent in other material... that is over six tons of mass.. even at a 60 ft limit, that is scary.

I love how the fact that they target the pack leaders of their predators to send a message is a great testament to the elephant's personality, great memory and incredible emotional (among others) intelligence. There has always been similar stories of their long-term calculated revenge, such as the elephant that went and killed the poacher who shot and killed his mother after he grew big enough to do so. Don't know how veracious this story is, but I love it all the same. While they are magnificent beasts indeed, you really don't want to get on their bad side: they just won't forget. Same applies for being on their good side, though! 😁

These were neat, as I hadn't heard of them before; I guess I thought blinking was a canine-only trick? Fun a mighty, bizarre monsters, and tbe end results of twisted, arcane experiments can be, sometimes u really like seeing just some "regular" creatures you might encounter, as one pokes through the wilderness. Very nice!
Mostly unrelated; would you ever consider doing a similar short video on Spriggan Gnomes? 2e isn't necessarily my jam, but it is when I first got into D&D, because I found the AD&D Monster Manual in an On Cue store, back in the 90s, and I really liked the art.😊 Back in 2e, I think every race had their "evil Underdark counterpart", but I feel like I haven't seen the evil, twisted Spriggan Gnomes since then, and if they did sneak into 3e, they were probably just monsters, without their Gnome heritage tacked on. I often complain about the Duergar being psionic, bit then really only changing size, and turning invisible, but I sort of liked how the evil, backstabby Spriggan changed size, dug through the earth, and worshiped Urdlen, another Gnome thing I feel got left behind in 2e. I don't think it would take a long video; they haven't really added to themselves in 20 years, and might not even be considered Gnomes, anymore, but I had to try. Spriggan Gnomes and Urdunnir Dwarves are two videos I still hope to someday see on your channel! Please have a great one!

Like if I drop something heavy above a large person wouldn't the higher surface area increase chances they are hit? Vs a small person having to move less surface area from under a falling object. Love the video either way, just want to know the thought process there for my own future tinkering.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Aha! I knew someone was going to ask that. Smaller creatures have got a longer distance to travel at their size than larger creatures, so when a huge object appears over your head, its just a matter of reaction time, nerve conductivity speed and how fast one can move. Large creatures just need to step to one side, small creatures need to run.

Of course the roaches are blink roaches and the PCs get laughed at as they go nuts trying to stomp them. This would in turn lead to a quest for the Rick Sanchez multidimensional can o raid artifact.

In my campaigns, something this massive falling more than 10' upon you (as a size L or smaller being) requires a Save vs. Death or die (if they hit)... success means you get the allotted damage and somehow squirm from getting the full impact. My DM'ing was based upon AD&D canon of early 2nd Ed and earlier (pre-WotC, TSR). D^mn... I'm a fossil.
As for them having difficulties with riders, they should not really have those problems... they are far more powerful than a scaled-up horse would be. The irony is that current AD&D rules allow a Mastiff (a big dog breed) to have a Halfling rider... dogs not at all sensibly built for riders, especially those more than 25% of its mass. WotC writers seem to focus more on the cartoony side of fantasy than the immersive.
I would use this beastie as a mess-with-my-players encounter. They are dark comedy fuel.

Or would that be more along the line of Teleport ?
Disney cartoons and movies have a long history theme of the hero's horse sitting down on minor flunkies for comic relief.
2.) Problem with your opening sentence about creature size, fall distance impact hit and save vs death or die roll. Lions are size large, and they can leap over 20ft tall fences. Even a mountain lion that weight in as much as an average size human coming off a roof or out of a tree will hit with overwhelming force. Your ruling can lead to abuse of three PC jumping off a ledge or out a window or tree will crush a random orc or hobgoblin to death with a single touch attack roll. I even see Westerns where when cattle were stampeding, and cows were jumping over each other's backs.
Pull up a YT video of a bucking bull at a rodeo, then imagine a bucking elephant. ( deep sigh .. ) Pink elephants on parade.
Story of a blood hound dog with ears so big they drag on the ground and the young hound dog trips over them all the time.
My last gaming shop ran some Whitewolf/World of Darkness: Werewolf games that were just slap stick with the Bone Gnawers PC.
b.) Stone age shamans/ druids dream time walkers as a Planescape campaign that travel the multiverse from D&D, Star Wars, DC and Marvel comic traveling with Norse ice giants with a herd of mammoths.
c.) Little Nemo adventure in slumberland, my first game shop really bent the rules with AD&D then went with 3e. We just wanted to run a game where Darth Vader was traveling with a parade of pink elephants fly through realities on a king size bed. Then have Snoopy fly by on his red doghouse.
Problem of defeating the ten dream lord demons, you can't take dream items back to the realm of waken thought with you. So the adventure amounted to nothing but minor Xp award gain with no treasure. Many players hated it, but few loved the break from all the other games they were playing.
Cool thing my last shop owner's wife that ran most of the games also was into reading the Harry Potter series so she could run some really twisted necromancer magic schools. So flip a coin for pre ESB or after ESB Luke Skywalker & Princess Leia end up at Howorth's school of magic by flying bed.
d.) Cameos of in game campaign McGuffins that up end the current plot of the adventure, ..
i.) Lovecraft Necronomicon human face stretch across the cover.
ii.) Pink Elephant, which travels all realities. Only seen by few of the PCs.
      iii.) Snoopy's red doghouse.
iv.) Little Nemo bed of dream travel. Or the nightmare bed frame.
v.) Sesame Street Oscar the Grouch trashcan. Or any trashcan.
e.) It could be said by the time you reach junior high school between 11 and 14 years old doing mass make believe group play stories is something you should put behind you. But me and my brother shared a room and had bunkbeds.. So you have nearly a dozen teenagers hanging out on the bunkbed playing D&D and running a Doctor Who game larp. Yes we did have to add extra support to the bunkbed's sections to keep from falling through. The screws that held the 1in by 1in bed support broke under the weight of eight children sitting on the bed.

@@krispalermo8133 That's the problem with post TSR AD&D, the size categories. Mammoths are the same mass as a Save vs. Death falling stone in a deathtrap, a semi-common trap in dungeons. Mammoths are massive enough to kill a lion by stepping on them, if the two existed in the real world. Massively speaking, it's like comparing you to a ferret and saying you two are about the same size category compared to a rat. Ya' feel me?
Well, from what I see in modern AD&D... it's a bit harder to die as a player character... and AD&D player characters were never really easy to kill.

Left over pizza, home made pizza dough or can roll bought. Then throw on leftover taco meat with slice or dice pan fried potatoes and thin slice chuck roast cover in four blend cedar Mexican cheese blend. So turkey dinner sounds cool. At one time left over KFC on frozen pizza was good to eat.
2.) " .. and AD&D player characters were never really easy to kill."
I seen a group of 15th-level AD&D PCs roll and miss hitting a goblin with only 3hp for close to an hour, no one could roll past 3 on d20 and had way too many 1s come up. After that battle the DM had to award more than 7xp for finally hitting the little bugger.
Then as a gag on a 12th-level barbarian 3.5e PC player. I had them wake up to the sound of a rat chewing on their leather shoe inside their home's bedroom. It was a 30min battle where the barbarian went into Rage mode, took 20 bites of dmg and the rat still got away. I was a waste of time but the dozen other players were laughing too much and they all took turns rolling to kill the rat. Afterwards the Rat was Awaken through the druid spell and made a N/PC with rogue levels for evasion class ability that steal and chew up the parties' household goods.

You know of the 50% thing, one time getting it as 1:2? Getting it 10 times in a row is 1:1,024, as in a 1 in 1,024 chance. That's akin to not being able to roll over a 10 on a d20 for a mere 10 rolls. As for that party you pointed out, unable to roll over a 3, that's about 1:173,415,299 in just 10 of the rolls. Not saying that the absurd level improbability didn't happen on the d20s, I'm just saying that the DM trolling the party or having some behind-the-scenes (unseen to the players) was more likely.
Reverse that, would you consider the BBE an EASY TO BEAT guy if your party's attack rolls couldn't roll UNDER a 17 if that helped them dust the BBE quickly? I doubt it.
I could play devils' advocate for that DM and give you a gigantic list on how that is possible, but I feel that would fall far within the TMI range.

      @@krispalermo8133 GRRR!
I have to tell you about my annual Thanksgiving Pizza!
Every year, I make a Thanksgiving Dinner inspired pizza. It's not a leftover Frankenstein's monster. I make it before the actual holiday, which is today now. Each time I make it, only two things are the same each time. One, the Turkey Sauce. I make turkey gravy into sauce by reducing it to 1/3 its volume... evaporating most of its water. The other thing is that I use thick-cut turkey cold-cuts as a pizza topping, chopped up to be more of a topping than a sandwich stuffer.
This year, I made my Turkey Sauce a parsley-heavy one. Quite often, Thanksgiving Pizza leans to having a soggy crust when baked. So, to bypass that before it MAYBE becomes a glitch, I baked the pizza crust naked halfway before dressing it. I then applied most of the Turkey Sauce, covering the whole thing, then applied the turkey cold cut bits to cover the whole thing. Then I used the rest of the sauce to lightly cover the turkey.
The pizza was rather simple this year, so my only additional one was stuffing. I cheated and purchased stuffing from a local hot food section, stuffing people loved. I manually broke off bits and applied it to the pizza, making it a nice even coat over the whole pie.
I then applied the cheese, a semi-light application of cheese with a heavy center coat (cutting the pizza matters there) and baked it until the bottom was crispy. The crispy thing on the bottom matters.
As simple as it was, this year's Thanksgiving Pizza went over like gangbusters. It beat my ham, turkey, and potato one three years ago and the "full meal" one of two years ago.
Right now, I have a turkey slow-cooking for a dinner that I won't be a part of... nice thing about being a foodie that kitchen idiots are willing to over-pay you for some simple things. I'm getting paid and I am promised tasty left-overs.
