Omg that rose wallpaper. As a child I lived in an old farm house built in 1800s. It had rose pattern paper throughout. I miss that house. It's been gone almost 50 years but it will always be my perfect memory of what home feels like.

Greetings from the windy city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 🇪🇹 🇪🇹 🇪🇹. We live and work today in the age of boring buildings made up entirely from Concreat, Aluminium and glass. This country houses across Great Britain and Europe surely will inspire todays and future Arcthects and Engineers and borrow them Ideas. They also give us hope we still have a functional houses from the past. They also bear moment of nostalgia about the good old days. Down here in my country, due to poor urban planing and sometimes greadiness of Authorities countless historical buildings which registered to the Heritage council were demolished in the past 15 years alone to lease the land for big money. Today for visitors caming to my city, there is little to show of the past. Thankfully the National Meusium and other Meusium around the country collected the historical and natural wealth as much as they could. British peoples you have to be proud of your tradition, history and culture. Great Job by the Castodians of the past and present. Merry Christmass!

I think now many of these dynastic families have inherited grand homes but not the fortunes required to maintain them and they are either falling into disrepair or being sold off.

Setting precedent makes legal process progressively easier until only one or two endangered structures remain. With at least one not having recieved timely maintanance, thus already faced with valid reason for demolition rather than endanger public regardless of any cultural historical value. By sitting on their hands rather than encouraging rehabilitation action

BEYOND REPEAT, BEYOND ALL HOPE OF DESCRIPTION STUNNING!!! Even in my imagination and mind, I can't even begin to comprehend the level of mastery, beauty, detail, craftsmanship, creativity and MAGNIFICENCE in even just ONE of those mind bogglingly astounding houses.

And today, after all these grandeur, culture, innovation, mastery, achievements, art, science, technology, discoveries, and leading in the evolution of conscience and the age of enlightenment, in the emancipation of the masses and in the establishment of democracies, people, who just yesterday lived in cow dung huts, shake their fists in front of our faces and yell "what has the white man ever accomplished? He is only a blue eyed devil." That's ignorance and jealousy speaking. The white man has accomplished more than any race on earth because, I believe, he is the smartest human..

Love the series and excellently researched families and oh goodness those homes! As an American I am just humbled by the number of such properties and magnitude of what these leading families accomplished. Granted the means to such ends can and should be questioned, but regardless, it is something I hope to see one day. The Cecils have truly borne the brunt of their success. “Never trust a Cecil” seems very deep seated in public sentiment, much like our Rockefeller and Morgan families! Michael, Albuquerque NM USA

Very impressive collection of craftsmanship. Too concentrated for me as an outsider. I get the impression you end up walking by them like ordinary stuff. Each peace deserves a certain part of attention and admiration. Bundled together the marvels they should create become an incredible weight. It makes me think of these giant Galapagos turtles. Just the few objects i maintained from my grandfather’s heritage kept me busy for 10 years. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have these kind of cargo ships storming towards you. So I admire the people who keep these places alive. If I’d have to add a contemporary object it would represent the generations of family members pushing these buildings forward through the centuries.

2:50:47 *"What has Britain given the world."* - *Lord Cook, Holkham Hall*
I appreciate this man's Authentic Attitude, his quick statement, (not replied to, but not edited out), is a most honest statement for countless people around this globe, including me, (born in Chicago, USA, and disconnected from my true place of lineage, and from the Country that should be my home.) When we are speaking to History, lineage, families, ours was "interrupted" by Britain, and never a word of remorse, rather a continued sort of animosity lingers towards us. As if we did something, wrong.
    I really appreciate his thought.

Huh. I remember watching a 1980s US-targeted "Treasure Houses" at Burghley with Lady Victoria Leatham who lived in the house.
Among all of the other condition issues both with the building and its contents, she was concerned with the restoration of the deteriorated bed curtains in the Queen's bedroom at the house. It was something like "It will be possible to order more [fabric] from Italy where the pattern still exists, but the cost would be some $800 per meter, and Lady Victoria would need 42 meters."
Lady Victoria also told a story about "Tripping over a box of Ming on the stairs to the minstrels' gallery," and how the house didn't have electricity until the 1950s, and even then it was limited to a single long extension cord that ran all through the house, upstairs, "To power [her] grandfather's electric razor."

As I move to a new house this year, and I watch this, I feel sad for those houses that are long gone and could've house a lot of families around the world that are homeless right now because of crises. It also brings to light the historical value of locations that I wish was emphasized more and taught to children more so that they care for it, like the grandest of palaces and humblest of cottages today. Honestly though, I wish I could live in a grander house with my whole family, where you can live in something with history and get lost in all the rooms yet even the poorest man in the world can appreciate it.

This video was totally amazing! 😊 It’s it funny that most of these grand houses and castles were furnished and decorated mostly by men. So what were the woman doing? Rearing children and socialising? I wonder if they would feel depressed with all of those massive dark cold rooms and feeling isolated out where there is no one for miles and miles. I bet because the places were so big, they may not have used a lot of the rooms. And of all men collectors travelling the world to obtain these objects, did the wives have to stay home? Where is the woman’s touch on any of these homes besides the tea cup and the paintings of them. It makes you wonder. Ite wonderful to know that these places are open to the public. It’s totally incredible that these houses are still standing. I would love to visit and just be a volunteer helping to keep things looking perfect. I’m sure if you lived there long enough, the novelty would wear off a little. But omg it’s a real time look back in history and it’s so pricless

58:22 In this amazing maximum-rococo room at 58:00, there's no place for the eye to rest. It's like screaming children trying to rip your eyes out. BUT THE MARCHING GRINNING GREEN WATER GOLLUM'S! it doesn't get any better or more surreal than that!!!

Thank You ALL family and members of the team that supports this property that I may today lay my eyes upon it. I have loved England and Britain all my life but at this point I realize I won’t likely ever set foot upon those shores. I’m certain I am not alone in that rather sad conclusion. Therefore I can only offer my deepest respect and gratitude to witness this lovely place through this program.

For the record, in the early 1950's, Queen Elizabeth II offered a dukedom to Winston Churchill. He respectfully declined, telling her that he wished to remain a commoner.

Out of all the grand houses I have seen/visited over the years, none of them has ever beat Robert Adams Culzean Castle on the Ayrshire Coast. It may not be the grandest or most extravagant (arguable) castle/country house in the U.K, but the castle sitting above terraced gardens on a clifftop location with the sea and mountains as the backdrop is just unbeatable.

@@notnek202 It was indeed. Culzean Castle was just one of many castles to be built/owned by the Kennedy family over the centuries. Culzean actually has a twin, Dalquaharran castle, though it's an empty shell now.

I was invited to put Orchids in the hall by Victoria about 36 years ago, I remember looking at these huge Chinese pots and looking at the cymbidiums I had brought up from London and thinking how small they would look, but they worked, Its a lovely house and Victoria was a lovely lady, We had lunch in the kitchen, with all the bells along the wall, fond memories.
