- In this video, we explore how the behaviour of of a metal changes in response to an externally applied oscillatory electric field. This will start off by looking at how we can derive a general formula for the permittivity of a metal.
We then turn our attention to the Drude model of metals, from which we consider the microscopic scattering of delocalised electrons within the metal. We then apply the Drude model to derive the permittivity and thereafter the refractive index of the metal at high and low field frequencies. Finally, we find out that above a certain oscillatory frequency (the plasma frequency), a metal behaves as if it is a dielectric and becomes transparent to propagating electromagnetic radiation.
