This is very nostalgic for me too, before the communism fell we had the same thing, New Year was the main event, not Christmas so we had the tree and the celebration on New Year’s Eve and I remember having the same type of glass baubles for the tree and similar assortment of dishes for the table. It's a bitter-sweet thing to look back on past celebrations and absolutely lovely to have some reminders of your childhood festivities with the tree decorations and to remember those loved ones we've lost along the way. It means so much and it''s not about how expensive the decorations are but what they mean to us. The robin (bird) decoration was especially beautiful. And what a pretty samovar! We live on a lake where pike is actually thrown back in the lake if caught because people here only like walleye (also known as pickeral). The interaction with your mom was my favourite part.

Hi 👋😀 there, Ksenia and your dish of herring under a fur coat reminds me of a dish we have in Sweden call sillsallad! Sill means herring and that fish has been and are a staple dish in our cuisine too and on our famous smorgasbord served in many different ways. We also have a beet root salad called rodbets salad that we serve with sylta ( a kind of meat dish traditionally made from the meat of the head and face of the pig pressed together with spices and then boiled and served cold ).
