Explore the midnight zone with deep-sea biologist Bruce Robison

  • The largest living space on Earth lies between our ocean’s sunlit upper layers and the deep seafloor. The midnight zone is home to our planet’s largest ecosystems and the life that thrives there likely outnumbers all other animals on the planet. And yet, we are still learning about this vast ecosystem with each research expedition.
    As the Monterey Bay Aquarium prepares for the launch of their 2022 exhibit, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean," they sat down with MBARI Senior Scientist Bruce Robison, who has studied and explored the midnight zone for his entire career. The stories he tells about the discoveries we’ve made boggle the mind, inspiring awe and wonder about how animals have adapted to this dark, cold, fluid world. Most of these animals don’t look or act like their shallow-water relatives, and have evolved an incredible array of strategies to not only survive in the midnight zone, but thrive there.
    Learn more about MBARI’s research and the incredible discoveries we've made as we explore the ocean at www.mbari.org.

    What I have never understood is how the creatures that live their entire existence in total darkness don't lose their minds and swim as fast as they can away from the sub's light.
    Anyone have any idea? I'm extremely curious about this, and have been for 25 years, at least.

    • @artedesarializ
      @artedesarializ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think they’re blind or something. Wouldn’t have the same eyesight in pure darkness 🤔

    • @Quazi-moto
      @Quazi-moto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@artedesarializ But their eyes are still good enough to see bioluminescence, which is comparatively quite dim. FAR dimmer than those sub's lights.
      I've thought before that maybe it's due to where those wavelengths are on the electromagnetic scale; but if we can see bioluminescence, then it falls into the "visible light" part of the spectrum, same as the sub lights. So that makes me think I'm wrong.

      Am more curious if they are blinded for the rest of their short lives on that side, and easy prey for larger predators. It would be the equivalent (sort of) of shining an airport search light into our eyes. Not likely to recover any normal sight after that.

    • @Quazi-moto
      @Quazi-moto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What an amazing opportunity to work studying the deep sea. I guess there's no specific career path to do it besides being a marine biologist and being at the right place at the right time.

    I really can't believe what I'm seeing. These fish look so weird yet so beautiful at the same time. I almost can't comprehend all the different shapes and colors of these fish.

    I love every second! My question is, is it ever unnerving being down there but not knowing if you'll encounter something that could be scary?
