War of the Worlds is an upcoming hardcore horror open world survival game which throws the player into the middle of the extermination of mankind with the sole purpose of surviving long enough to find a way to bring down the alien machines. Loot buildings, fight off hostile survivors, stay hidden from the machines, and stay alive. The game is being developed by FlipSwitch Games.

@@Aatish2k8 the main enemy’s are cannibals, which are alive and haven’t been resurrected. at most, if googled, it says they might have been experimented on, but they aren’t and have never been dead
This is the kind of game I've been waiting for someone to make--a game that uses modern lighting engines and tactical ballistics to be *scary* without being a contrived horror game.

Ha ha. Yeah, well, you'll be very disappointed if you think this one not even functioning cutscene, with 2 store assets, no real animations, nothing, really, will be any good. Or even a game at all. It's just a guy making a map with a 3D engine that's too mainstream. Probably even less than the old maps I made of my own house and the like for fun when I was a kid using Half-life's set of tools of the SDK. or that one map I made with cryengine 2 like 15 years ago, just for me and the few people that also did the same type of thing on Crydev.
@jojolafrite90 right. This trailer shows us nothing. Like the slender man games. Awesome job with the atmosphere. I am hoping to see some compelling gameplay loop. So far it's just runing and hiding. So I guess if it were me making this I'd have to make that survival a complex system of food and health. Unless it's going for shorter rogue-like runs. As it stands you only have to survive until they die off so it seems short lived. Curious how that will not hinder from getting repetive. Look at Icarus, people hated having to start over from scratch each mission. I love the idea though. Can't wait to see where it goes.
When I watched the film as a kid, I had a nightmare of it. And it was quite a real and detailed nightmare too. I remember "waking up" to strange echoy machinery outside my apartment, thinking there was late night construction going on. I walked out to my balcony and saw the most awesomly horrifying thing. We lived at the highest floor of the building, so I could see everything, the height almost rivaling the alien machines that I could see heading towards town. Again, it was night and there was heavy snow fall. The spotlights on the front of them illuminated the snow like how headlights on a car does, which wasn't a sight that was seen in the movie. So this detailed realistic moment was straight out of my head. The whole reason I'm bringing this up is because I almost forgot about that dream, but seeing this game brought my memory back. I would like to see different bioms in this game, like a snowy town section up in the mountains.

I'm 25 and I still have nightmares about this s***lightshow and then I heard it and it sounded like gunfire and lasers and s*** and then one of these tripods came down except it wasn't a tripod and had like five legs and it was massive it was such a cool f****** dream I wish something like that would happen
I saw the movie when I was 8 or 9 I think and had a very similar nightmare. To this day just the sound of those trumpet horns give me an uneasy feeling of dread. IDK how they managed it but they scared a generation of kids with this movie and I can't wait for the game!!!

I heard somewhere that there may be a pvp mode where a group of players try to survive against one player playing as a tripod.
Like DayZ style where enemy NPC's aren't the only threat, and you don't know who you can trust because they might want your loot.

Wow, if you can play Coop with the guys it will be amazing, imagine a bunch of people trying to survive while these machines are out there hunting you

I don't get why people brags so much about graphics. A game to be a good game it doesn't need to be with the level of realistic graphics that looks like the game will come out of the screen computer or that you will get suck into the game. I like games with a more retro look, it feels cozy to me, but again, must be nostalgia talking, cuz i'm from the time when games weren't exactly 1080p to say the least. xD

Indie developers are on fire right now. With what's been showcased so far in regards to this game, more funding and technical help, this could easily be a survival classic

Wow 5:44 There’s even the indication that more aliens are being transported underground into buried tripods, due to the lightening striking the same area repeatedly. Gives a dreadful feeling.

This game is simply being the only one that I really wouldn't have the courage to play, it makes me afraid, terrified, it really moves with us, these sounds are incredible incredibly scary

Absolutely agree. War of the worlds was the only movie that actually ever really terrified me still to this day. I dunno what it is about that movie but 😱. I had nightmares for a while after watching the movie I would hiding in the basement like in the movie, I definitely don’t think I could play this game 😅

At least a few times a year i have this nightmare, they come down from the sky, around my house, and im trying to get away... the car? ... to much movement... run for the trees? I mean its on our front street, destroying the next door neighbors house... truly, Spielberg must have tapped into something deep, because its always the most terrifying dream, and i always remember it... must be what cats or mice think of us....
when i watched this movie as a child, my parents probably thought I was young and wouldn't mind it, but the sound the machines made became a sound i'd hear a lot in nightmares. To this day it makes my heart race and my body tense, it's awesome
this game actually terrifies me, it looks amazing! The size of those things are just incredible! I cant wait!.. You cant even run away from them because of how much more ground they can cover compared to you.. The best bet is to lay flat in a heavily bushy area or in a basement.
well for me running and hiding outside wouldn't terrify me in this game.... but when you mentioned the basement lol and the fact that the tripod probe can come in the house and search around, now that would terrify me if I was hiding in a basement in this game especially because basements are typically 1 way in and 1 way out. 😅😅😅 I can already feel the horror and suspense in that situation in this game.
Thus far, the games atmosphere is really chilling and certainly keeps your adrenaline pumping.
The only criticism I will make is the humans could do with some work.
I feel like this game showcases how you *could* (not should) go running after the tripods like you're a storm chaser and its a tornado. Technically perfectly doable, but you also have to bet your life that you'll have time to find cover if it turns toward you.
I think a major feature of the game is... they WILL kill you.
To make it work.... the problem with gamers is theres no stakes.... im thinking.... PAY... PER .... play, in VR as real as it could get, movie graphics, fortnight style, multi-player, ....and SURVIVE. Probably what every movie will be in time.

@zeph0shade my experience in most multi-player games is most players will ruin the 'reality' of most games, because they're no stakes involved... its like video poker where they bet all in and it ruins the dynamic of betting anything thats worth something..... like running toward the alien ship that is going to kill you... a multi-player game like this, ...i can only imagine swaths of people teabagging the leg of the alien ship
the fact he put realistic dark lighting makes it 100 times better
I am rooting for these guys. This looks very promising if done right. Imagine being the Alien in pod and hunting down everyone in server one by one while trying to avoid being taken down by other players. This can require some good teamwork and planning for humans to win.

This does look fun, will definitely have a try. It might be good to see a game or film remake one day that sticks faithfully to the original book. One of the things that makes it so compelling is the depiction of late 19th century humans fighting advanced martian war machines with what amounts to bayonets and horse-drawn artillery. Every representation of WotW I've ever seen has been set way after this or in modern times. I think it loses something special when they do that.
Seems like this will be a genuine good survival horror if it’s pulled off decently, it’s looking promising !

i am SO looking forward to playing this, hoping for some co-op, because i know a few people that would love to join me on this experience
I think an overgrowth mechanic like in Project Zomboid when you can see the "alien blood vegetation" take over the streets and houses as days go by would be both really immersive and creepy.

A quick suggestion, based on this trailer's content:
- In the first death, maybe because it's day, the death animation looks weird, maybe a strong motion blur when the player is falling and a fade to black right after touching the ground, would be a cool visual effect.
Imagine if luring them to trip on powerlines could be a tactic
A few questions:
How long is the invasion in the game? (15 days according to novel)
Do the Tripods fall on their own or do the ships’ biological components get infected to and lose shielding (up to players to destroy tripods)?
Are the shields canonically activated at the same time as weapons are when they first emerge?
These are relevant to gameplay

You'll be able to set the time of invasion yourself. I think one week is the default option, if i'm not mistaken

Nice update. I really hope there will be some kind of story elements that make you have some kind of progress / challenge, because i'm scared that the game just consists of you running around and surviving the tripods.
Edit : And the sound spatialisation seems inverted, it's pretty obvious at 20:34, as we hear the radio comms from the right but the radio is to the left inside the garage. Could be misleading to the player

One of Spielberg's best films in the 2nd half of his career. It's underrated, IMO. Both a commentary on 9/11(and dealing with tragedy) and just a damn scary sci-fi flick. This looks cool.

Very nice work, but I would really love to see the black smoke and terraforming from the book. This is very clearly based on the Tom Cruise movie which I really liked but makes for a far less complex story. It was never supposed to be just tripods running around zapping people. The whole point was not just that they wanted our planet, but they wanted our planet to be THEIR planet.
Good news, they have that. The tripods can turn captured people into blood mist and everything

I grew up watching the 2005 movie when I was a kid, so I can already imagine playing this game would be awesome and terrifying at the same time.

You can tell this was made by one guy with no budget. I like the franchise and think it has potential to make a decent game but he's gonna need a lot more help and a lot more time if this is all he can manage on his own
The way you win this game is by coughing on the tripods.
Idea: top to bottom remake of the game to be set in great Britain in the 1890s. Survival horror emphasis, makes the player feel powerless and hopeless. Goal is to evade and survive invasion. Adheres to original novel closely. More machines like flying, the harvesting machine, etc.
i know little of this project but i feel a race against time element could be good for the over arching game. the longer the invasion goes on the less you have to work with, more is destroyed, fewer people, more pods activated, ratcheting tension as time progresses. just, throwing dumb ideas out there.
this looks like it has fantastic potential, the atmosphere set up feels great.
Umm, so do we ever get to actually fight these alien machines, or do we just stand back and watch them burn the world down? And will we ever find out what happened to Burger Knight? Stay tuned to find out... I guess. 😒
There's not really much you can so against them. In the book, and the film, they were killed off by disease. Their immune systems weren't equipped for earth's bacteria and viruses and so it killed them

One thing I and I'm sure others are waiting to see is the inclusion of weapons in this game that actually have the potential of destroying or at least damaging the tripods. Is that something which will eventually be included?
This is a horror story, not an action one.

Honestly could be such an intense and terrifying experience, but I think it will just end up taking away from that initial feeling we all got as kids watching it.

Very atmospheric game
Now this is an Indie game that has been given a lot of love and care.
The night mode and fog mode gave me anxiety. And seeing that thing pointed in the direction of the player out in the open.. huge potential here.
Too be true to the film it needs a non stop loop of that girl screaming.

If you give the main character voice lines i think it would be better. Would make the game seem more alive.
Hearing the equivalent of Ray's "SHIT!" would be a vast improvement for sure! ;)
I don't want 'my' speech determined by the game, that makes no sense to me and would break immersion. At worst, maybe multiple-choice, I suppose, but best of all would be my saying nothing, and no lame storyline either. Just get out there and survive.

This game is awesome. Imagine an open world game where you have to survive and tripods randomly just can spawn near you and u have to survive them as well.
looks awesome, try and make the heat ray laser sounds more eerie and faded at night time in the distance, but still chilling.

can you add m16, that would make a bit of sense cause the us army doesn't use russian and french arsenal as far as i know. plus it's one of my most favorite weapons.

Okay, as an avid fan of War of the world's, this is absolutely AMAZING. As I was watching the video(being as infatuated with the tripods as I am) was hoping that in the mentioned multiplayer that there was the possibility to control the tripods and use them to exterminate the human teams. I can't express just how exciting this is to see.
