Penn relays 1964, 65. - 7th, 8th grade, Outta school early for Tuesday quals. Meet pals. Uniform under clothes, spikes in hand. Subway trolley to 37th st stop, 25 cents each way ... the never-ending short walk to Franklin Field - butterflies in the gut. The old cinder track. Qual'd for finals, Philly CYO 440 relay. Repeat for Friday's finals. That was the big leagues. Climb the river end drainpipe and sneak in for Saturday's big events, saw Bob Hayes win twice!
Those first memories stand out more than running there later in HS and college.

@@jxrdanemrey Franklin Field Penn Relays is the Cathedral of track, like since the late 1800's.
I'll not forget my first look in awe up at the crowded stands, before the start.

My high school will be there competing..St.Catherine High from Jamaica. It's great to be living in Philadelphia :). The last time I was here, I lived in New York.
2009-2011 - 4x100, 4x400, 4x800, Christiana High School Newark DE we had some weapons for a small school.

The majority of people attend the Penn Relays to watch the Sprint Relays not the 4 by Mile and distance races. Nobody is glued to their TV sets to watch distance races because their is no urgency their. You can go use the bathroom and come back and the distance race is still going. These presenters did a bad Job. You are not going to get Americans with short attention span to be hyped up and want to watch the Penn Relays because of distance races like the mile. All these presenters keep promoting was distance races like the mile. In the future these presenters needs to highlight the sprint Relays because this is what most of the fans are interested in.
My first penn relays. Ran grade school relays later watched Johnny Mathis ( singer) high jump. I think he finished 2nd. This was before Fosbury flop.

I never heard of Penn Relay on NBC, ABC, or CBC. If this American Track and Field athletes nationally or Internationally since Jamaican athletes there or do these Jamaicans attend school here?!! I know about the World 🌎🌍 Championships, but not 🚭🚫 Pennsylvania Relays. Which teams medalled and which teams were the Jamaican athletes teams competing? Just asking because the competitiors haven't mentioned the top three medalists.
@Gail the Penn Relays have been around for decades. The Jamaican High Schoolers go to school in Jamaica they are coming straight from yard. However we do have quite a few Jamaicans competing for the College Teams as they attend the Universities on Track Scholarship.
