This was the best hockey I’ve ever witnessed. Every shift mattered… Every inch of ice mattered… No one took a shift off and every puck was fiercely battled for every minute, of each game against Canada.

As a Canadian with a huge hockey family (players in the league) I've always rooted quietly for the Americans. We have a huge ego as being the best up here, but with family that have gone through the American college and even high school, they really have as much heart as we do, if not more. So happy to have many American players as my favs, Guerin, Lafontaine, Brian Boyle, Modano (Prince Albert Raiders rep!), some Whitney guy? etc etc. Great interview.

The Miracle on Ice was before I was born, so the 1996 World Cup squad was my upstart American team that helped me further become a hockey fanatic. When I got my first Devils jersey, I debated getting Brodeur or Guerin. If Guerin had a different number I might have opted for him. Guerin broke out offensively afterwards and I always had that itch to have a Guerin jersey. Years later, my friend gave me a blank 2002-04 era Team USA jersey which I eventually had customized with Guerin.
As part of my silly vacation in 2015, I went to the NHL Awards show and NHL Draft. I saw that Guerin was one of the presenters, so I ended up packing that jersey with me. I accidentally ended up backstage afterwards but didn't run into him. Then I only saw him from afar at the draft. The next stop after the draft was Pittsburgh where I was meeting up with a buddy to see a Pirates game. To my surprise, the entire Penguins staff was slumming it on Southwest with me. Eventually I worked up the nerve to ask Billy G to autograph the jersey and he couldn't have been more accommodating (my Sharpie died and he had a staffer dig one out). Chatted with him a little bit more at baggage claim. He mentioned that his Salt Lake Olympic jersey had been stolen, so part of me was irrationally worried that he thought I somehow ended up with it.

2:15 Everyone who played with Leetch says this lol. That dude was sooooooo underrated. He was scary good not only offensivley, but defensively as well. I put him in the class of Ray Bourque and in some ways, Leetch was above him during that time period.

Suspect Canada was hampered by some political decisions. They put Gretzky with Damphousse and C. Lemieux. Probably also why Odeliein was picked (played for the habs).
But really when you have Gretz, Messier, prime Yzerman, Lindros, Sakic, down the middle, there should be no excuses. Though I think Lindros got injured at some point.
I'm American but I have to admit I was going for Canada at the time because I hated a lot of the American players especially Suter and Derian Hatcher. But I was 8 so not sure how much of that was irrational.
