So epic.....as a Vancouver MTB rider starting summer of 1986....talking about road trips to Moab forever but not getting there till 2017 and again in 2022...this film just hits all the right notes! Thank you.
First rode Moab in 87, when I lived in St. George. Moved to DC on 89 then to Moab in 99, managing to do a Moab trip just about every year. From 87 to 2023 is a lot of years. I’m 75yo now, and ride every day. Practice loop this morning in the fog 1/7/23.
Hey Matt, great video. Thanks for stirring up memories. Your Dad and I also rode Mammoth and Tahoe on the way back. Lotsa fun with 2.5 inch travel, rim brakes and good old bar ends.
So awesome! I started mountain biking in Moab in 1989. Regarding the Moab Dump: After a day's riding we would go shooting at the dump. They would let us in if no one else was around. Grab some trash, cans, bottles and blast away! Haha! I was on Slick Rock last year and that's all changed around now. Cheers to you and your dad.
Positively EPIC that you did this comparison with your Dads video. His footage brought back a ton of memories (I still ride my 1991 Klein from time to time). Great job guys!
Great Video! My first time riding Slick Rock was 1989 on my 89 Team Stumpjumper. There was several of us at the time. One friend of mine even rode it on his Huffy. No suspension, Bar ends were in and zero suspension. The last time I rode it was two months ago on my Trek EBike. After all I'm 68 now and that was 34 years ago when Mtb was beginning for me. It was awesome then, and it still is. After watching this I had to dig up the hundreds of pictures of our Moab trips over the years. Yes I do remember the Moab Dump. It was a beautiful site.
You beat me by a year or two probably. A friend who joined us on one of our early trips did all the rides with us on our rigid bikes. I just reconnected with him and he was telling me about the full squish Santa Cruz he got recently. He said he didn't really deserve such a nice bike, as cycling isn't his true love or main sport. I said, "No way! Anyone who's ridden Moab rigid for a week has EARNED the best full suspension bike the market can provide!"
Dude, I kept saying, "What a cool video," over and over again while watching this. Cherish memories. Recreate them with your own families. Live and love life! Great job, my dudes!!
8mm tape was where it was at, back then(ouch, I’m 28..)!! LOVE this. Shows such an amazing transition in tech, as well as how awesome your dad was. lol And 8mil was the best back then!
I know the weather was bad, but I have never seen Delicate Arch completely empty like that. Even in the off season, there has always been a couple dozen people there. That’s awesome that you had it all to yourself!
Incredible! I grew up riding Moab with my dad in the 80’s and 90’s. Was fortunate enough to live an hour and a half away. In two months I am taking my dad back for the first time in 30 years to now ride e-bikes on slickrock.
I absolutely love biking in Moab I go every year it’s always amazing just how creative you can get with lines when you can really go anywhere on the rocks (except for the bacteria) 😉
Great video as always. Creative and interesting. The Golden 90’s MTB was my era so I love this. And I agree, the bikes are NOTHING like they are today, but the fun was off the charts! Thanks guys.🙏👍😉
Never made it there but back in the day it was THE place to ride. I was always jealous when I'd open up the new Mountain Bike Action magazine and there were tons of pics from Slickrock. As for the bikes, they were the best you could get back then, ask anyone who rode back then and they will tell you that themselves. Thanks for the great vid......
Thanks for the trip down memory bike lane. I biked Slick Rock almost 30 years ago on my hardtail Specialized with UmmaGumma tires for one of the most memorable cycles on my life! I cant believe we didnt get any pictures, tho...
Great concept! First rode Moab in 93 w/ my rigid 89 Team Stumpjumper & have now lived here for 24 years. The guy in the entrance booth is my (now famous) buddy Jason 😂 Our 2nd place beautiful dump is still pretty schweet!
What a great video! Still ride my 1989 rigid Marin... my Dad (who's in his mid 80s) has just retired his suspension Trek - said he's sticking to weight training and model railways!
Wow, awesome reminder to myself, I was in Moab the first week of September of 1994. Haven't made it back, but hope to one day. I rode Slick Rock twice, Gemini Bridges loop, Porcupine Rim, and my favorite, Poison Spider Mesa w/ the Portal Trail....all on my 1993 GT RTS 2 with a RS Mag 21 fork.
That was awesome!!! GREAT idea and excellent execution. And now I;m wondering why ya'll had to be in SLC so soon hahhaha!!! Thanks for posting, thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I rode Moab with my friends in 2001. It was 36C when we got there, then we got hailed on, rained on, and snowed on the next day. I wonder if my kid's only 10 years away from riding Moab? Makes me feel old.
Pretty cool! I was mountain biking Slickrock and Moab area in 1992. I should go back and recreate some of my photos. And yes, I can still mountain bike. I never stopped cycling and I still use my original Giant mt bike I bought late 80s. It was $700 then, and it still rides better than the 1200-2000 range bikes now (I tested a bunch at the local cycle shop past October to see if should upgrade-even the owner said I wouldn’t get anything comparable to my bike unless I spent a lot more. Got a road bike instead just to have something different for riding roads). Keep up the biking and exploring. Sixty 60 year old you will thank 20-30s year old you.
At 44, I feel blessed to have ridden mountain bikes throughout the ages. I’ve worked in the industry and have ridddn all sorts of bikes. I’ll tell ya one thing, most people don’t need the Uber expensive bicycle. I loved selling high end bikes to weight conscious guys over 250 (I’m a Clydesdale myself), but there’s a lot of great bikes at lower price points, but we are a consumer driven society.
Such a timeline coincidence. Until my pre-retirement acquisition of a new MTB in 2022, I last did serious MTB riding back in 1992, but sorta gave it up when I moved away from the great trails of Marquette, MI. Now that I'll have more time available, it'll be "game on" once again. BTW - the MTB technology has changed a bit since the good old days! 😄
7:53 - that's along the west Castle Valley rim (Porcupine Rim) I believe. Pretty far out on sand flats. While I haven't gone there myself, there's a place called "Coffee Pot Rock Area" on the Porcupine Rim Jeep Trail (which also connects to the Porcupine Rim Bike Trail) and it seems to match the perspective well at coords : 38.607163243981084, -109.39471716089376
I've been to Moab 16 times at this point and if someone said, "Dude, you can go to Moab for a week, but ONLY ride Slickrock the entire time." I'd still go in a heartbeat!
I was born and raised in Moab, but now live in Northwest Oregon. I return back often as I still have a lot of family there, but even so, this was a fun watch! Around 1993, I would have been about 11, and only a few years after that I used to ride my little BMX bike up the hill past the old dump and ride on the slick rock trail. Single speed, no problem! Also, I think that last shot of your dad and his buddy with Castle Rock in the background was most likely taken from the high point of Porcupine Rim. On your next visit, you must take some time to ride that trail. Definitely one of my faves. Judging by the trees in the background in one of those van rear hatch shots, I wonder if your dad camped up in the La Sal Mountains and then rode down the Whole enchilada? I'm not sure how old that trail is though. Did it exist in 93? I'm not sure. I first road the bottom half (Porcupine Rim) in 1999 on a hardtail GT Aggressor. Bumpy ride.
I cant stop watching these videos. I want friends like yall 🤙 Also; your channel is tops. Production level is tops. Narration is tops. Vibes TOPS. Much love from the midwest ❤
Good vid! Camcorders were mega expensive, not easy to afford back then. Much easier for ppl to get a new go pro these days! Not surprised he had a titanium 26r HT, they were the top of the range bike back then! Still had lots of fun! Would be cool if a future relative of yours refs your "Dad cam" and the "Grandpap" cam - lol. Maybe they will spot my comment and ref it ;)
Pretty sure your dad's shot at 7:50 is from Porcupine Rim, since that's Castle Valley in the background. Your shot was from Slickrock near Shrimp Rock?
Although I haven't actually seen the dump, I've seen Kodiak from Homer and I can understand their argument. Then again, alpine/artic views are a dime a dozen in Alaska and Canada. Moab is far more unique as far as landscapes go. I'd give it to Moab if it were up to me!
Bart is the best name ever, and i would know i am one
Son?!
Now we need an inverse video of your dad and his friends taking a trip to Whistler and filming it with modern gear.
Sigh… *pulls out lycra*
I want the video of Matt's dad watching the footage side by side.
Yes please!
So epic.....as a Vancouver MTB rider starting summer of 1986....talking about road trips to Moab forever but not getting there till 2017 and again in 2022...this film just hits all the right notes! Thank you.

Awesome! Jealous over here! Enjoy :)
Hey Matt, great video. Thanks for stirring up memories. Your Dad and I also rode Mammoth and Tahoe on the way back.
Lotsa fun with 2.5 inch travel, rim brakes and good old bar ends.
Hey, Chris. Thanks! I should send you the full tape. -Matt
2.5" travel? What LUXURY! More like 1.8" for me!
Our first few trips were fully rigid, so when I returned with
Great fun! Nice job recreating the experience.
Where's the reaction of video of your Dad watching it?! That's all I want to see!
We need this
+1!
I second this!

Glad you enjoyed it!
Now I’m getting a dad cam. Sick vid
Yes!! 📹❤

I love the whole idea behind this video. Truly heartwarming, and it brought back a flood of fond memories of me and my old man. Thank you! 🍻
Thanks for stopping by 🍻
AWESOME VIDEO...GOD BLESS YOUR DAD..I LIVED ON MY BIKE TO..MISS THEM DAYS..
Jason Matt and Kaz have the most underrated channel ever!!!

This is so good !! We need to see a reaction video of your dad watching
I absolutely love biking in Moab I go every year it’s always amazing just how creative you can get with lines when you can really go anywhere on the rocks (except for the bacteria) 😉
this right here is why i'm subscribed. genuine original content
Very cool find! The first time I rode slickrock was in '93 or '94 on a family trip to AZ. Thanks for the flood of memories!
Great video as always. Creative and interesting. The Golden 90’s MTB was my era so I love this. And I agree, the bikes are NOTHING like they are today, but the fun was off the charts! Thanks guys.🙏👍😉

Loved this! I was a pretty avid rider in 93 so this brings back a lot of good feels.
Well done. I have similar videos from my trips to Moab in the 90’s Still riding there at least once a year when the border is open. 😊
Thanks for the trip down memory bike lane. I biked Slick Rock almost 30 years ago on my hardtail Specialized with UmmaGumma tires for one of the most memorable cycles on my life! I cant believe we didnt get any pictures, tho...
Very, very cool video...
I lived in Moab in 1993, so this brings back serious memories! Thank you for posting

Such a cool idea! You guys nailed it
this needs more views and like because this was beautiful!!!!
Good stuff and epic trip. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
It’s amazing to me that the 1993 footage looks better than the new footage shot on the 1997 dad cam.
Well executed. This is great.
That is so cool 😎. Great idea! Thanks for sharing. This has given me an idea. To the VHS tape archives 😊
This is actually one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen.
So sick! Loved the Filming and how you guys pieced it all together! Cheers🤙

I’d like to see both vids!
Great project!!
That's was RAD
Best thing I've seen in a long time

As always, fantastic content. Thank you.
we called it Lycra. Spandex is what Jazzersize people wore. Great Video!
this could be one of my favorite video yall have made!
I.....want a titanium mountain bike 😍 those old lightspeeds were sickkkk
Pretty sure this is my favourite video from y'all in years. Wonderful stuff :)

Amazing! Thanks for the entertainment, such great storytelling. 🤙
Priceless .
Slickrock is so dope! I only got to ride there for a couple hours like you guys but it was sick
I've been to Moab 16 times at this point and if someone said, "Dude, you can go to Moab for a week, but ONLY ride Slickrock the entire time." I'd still go in a heartbeat!
Your dad filmed this on my 2nd birthday 🎂 🥳 that so cool!
I was born and raised in Moab, but now live in Northwest Oregon. I return back often as I still have a lot of family there, but even so, this was a fun watch! Fantastic!
That was great to watch and I'm sure for you, even better to have filmed and created memories that will last forever.
Great idea, great video.
Good stuff! Such great memories. This could be my/our biography. And I'm sure many can say the same. Thank you!
I cant stop watching these videos. I want friends like yall 🤙
Also; your channel is tops. Production level is tops. Narration is tops. Vibes TOPS.
Much love from the midwest ❤
Easily one of the best videos you've made. Very very cool.
First trip to Moab was spring break of 1993 while I was at the University of Colorado.
half the population of moab on any given day is generally from Boulder
Really neat video guys! Loved it!!
Dude, this was perfect! So cool!
as soon as Matt's voice over kicks in you know its gonna be a good video
one of the coolest mtb vids on the toobs
Great idea. 👍👍
Thanks 👍👍
I actually live in Moab. It's way too hot in the summers and the tourists can be annoying sometimes, but it's a nice place nonetheless.
Was it a different parking lot where they had beers in the back of the van? Or did someone chop down all the trees at the slick rock parking lot?
Different spot entirely…the old shot was Tahoe after leaving Moab. Close enough. Don’t worry, no trees were harmed 😅
@@mahalomydude Had the same question/concern!
Crazy, was going to say the erosion at 7.43 from 93 to now seemed like a major amount, still nice try to get a similar shot.
it's a completely different spot. trust me castleton tower is very much still there.
I bet that your Dad would say that's one of the greatest moments of his life when you played that video for him, well done!!!
Matt had already given me some ben3th underwear so he has set the bar pretty high❤
30 years dang 😂
Too sweet 💯
I really enjoyed this video 👌👌👌
Now your son needs to make the same video!
Funny vid, looked like a lot of fun to recreate.
This is really cool!
Awesome video!

Hah I look forward to meeting Bart. I loved this, hope your dad enjoyed it :)
Just fyi the shot you couldn't find is looking out east over castleton tower, probably from Porcupine Rim
Loved this. Haha
Most scenic dump in U.S. -- Monashka Bay, Kodiak Island, AK.
Although I haven't actually seen the dump, I've seen Kodiak from Homer and I can understand their argument. Then again, alpine/artic views are a dime a dozen in Alaska and Canada. Moab is far more unique as far as landscapes go. I'd give it to Moab if it were up to me!
Hands down dope af.
No shot, I got a Papa John's commercial right before you guys filmed the "first papa John's"
i thought the first papa john's was at the dump
Love it.
This is great
Now we just need an Alaska trip to track down the sign
This is an amazing video guys 🙌🔥🔥 Mahalo my dudez 🤙🤙
the shot you mention that you couldn't find but kinda replicated? that looks to be on the enchilada. either UPS or LPS
dude this is so sick
Your dad was faster in 93 because the brakes were so terrible. I first rode there in 95 - great memories
Titanium bikes in 1993? Your dad must've been ballin.
very cool
