Can you play CHORDS and SOLO at the SAME TIME?

- Many students ask me in our guitar lessons here in Vancouver how they can combine the 12-bar blues form and soloing at the same time. There's a specific method I use for teaching this skill on guitar. This video shows the gradual progression and exercises that you can do to be able to play chords and solo in between, without losing your place in the 12-bar blues form.
This video is great for intermediate guitar players who enjoy playing the blues, or just any guitar students who want to get better at combing rhythm guitar with solo or lead guitar lines in an improvisation or in songs you might enjoy playing.

Good teacher, calm and to the point.
This is exactly what i was looking for - subscribed - please post more like this - simple stuff is great - the same / similar / same chords different licks and turnaround - doesn’t matter - just please post more like this! Thank you 🤘🎸🎶
Thanks! I like your idea of more variations on this.
Just stumbled across your channel, I love the lessons and all your content, you sir are a great teacher
Thanks Tim!!! Lots more coming
Gifted teacher. Very gifted.
Thank you! Lots more coming to the channel and our Patreon! www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Thank you for this! I hope you’ll consider following up with a more advanced version of combined rhythm+lead playing, Hendrix styles, etc. I’d love a whole series of videos on this topic, going from intermediate to advanced concepts. It’s not something I’ve been able to find much instruction on.
Thanks, more like this is coming, among other topics
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Awesome! So glad you are making videos on this topic. After writing this I realized that there is actually a ton of instruction on the related concept of chord melody in the Jazz world, but I think many guitarists will be interested as I am to develop the skill to combine rhythm and lead playing for blues/country/rock/indie/pop etc
@@r0bophonic Not here to correct you, but voice leading is something else entirely. Hmm, maybe I am here to correct you 😆
@@nateo7045 Oops! I meant to write “chord melody”. Also different but related. Thanks for the correction :)
@@r0bophonic :)
This question was always on my mind.
Thanks for answering.
Thanks for watching!
One of the best lessons I’ve seen ! Thank you ! And very well explained!
Thank you!! Glad it was helpful!
A fairly simple concept to grasp theoretically but not so simple (in my experience) to follow-through on practically. Fantastic approach and explanation. Thank you.
Thank you! It certainly will take practice. Thanks for commenting 🙂
Wonderfully informative and just where my interests lie at the moment. Thx!
Thank you very much! Lots of lesson on the channel! And more coming (almost) every Saturday!
Thank you! Such a valuable lesson in my journey right now. No looper pedal, no jam tracks, no metronome - Just an intimate connection with the guitar+amp+timing. Felt magical once I nailed it.
Absolutely no one does this on YT. Maybe active melody to some extent.
Awesome, thanks NJ! Really appreciate the comment!
Brilliance from Blue Morris
Thank you!!!
The more I look at this (And I have been working with it for 3 days now) the more I realize how great this is on so many different kevels. For so long now, I have known my pentatonic up and down the neck, I have known by Diatonic up and down the neck, but have never been able to accomplish a nice blues sound, mostly because NOBODY talks about timing between chords, and exactly how to accomplish what this video talks about, and the connections it makes. Not sure how you can follow this up with something similar, where the focus is on timing the chores as they come and pass, but that would be brilliant to do! ... Thanks so much for this lesson! ,
Thanks for the great feedback. I do plan on doing more like this one. Might be a few weeks away for another on this subject as I'm working ahead of schedule, but definitely more to come. Thanks!
Holly shit this video and lesson , is pure Gold! I always struggled knowing where I am in the measure. Can I do another lesson like this but not using the quick change to know when a phrase is finished to go to the next chord. Thx 🙏
You're amazing!
Thanks Markie G! New video every Saturday
Great video. Perfectly broke down how I'm working towards playing like.
Glad to hear it thanks!
Great lesson!!
Thanks Phil!!
Thank you so much!! This was expertly crafted lesson. Please more ! Awesome
Thanks Henry! More coming
Really helpful.
Thanks Ron!
G'day Blue, enjoying the simplicity of your lessons Bloke!! Most players I follow on TH-cam are seriously advanced players that leave me in the dust!!! I like your style of teaching the basics!! Cheers. See ya on the next one.
Awesome, thank you for the great feedback. Lots more coming, every Saturday
I am really enjoying your vidoes, lots of great info and ideas,!
Awesome, thank you!
Cool Lesson. Thank you for this.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you!! This lesson is just genius, because it simplifies what many teachers make complicated. By reducing the soloing spot(s) it makes it possible for beginner/intermediates like me to make the 12 bar format musical and to ‘just play’ :)
Glad it was helpful thanks! Lots more on the channel 😀
Ok, another cool lesson!
Millions of turnarounds? Suggestion: future lesson you teach a few and how to construct them?
Coming up!
Thanks so much for doing this.
Thanks Manitoba Slim!
Yup, same comment as below, would love to see more of exactly this...
Okay good to know, thanks! I'll plan another one like this for a few weeks from now. I'm filming 3-4 weeks ahead of release right now :)
Subbed! Well done thank you
👍🎸
Lesson idea: my favorite/most useful turnarounds?
That video is already filmed and coming soon, thanks Rob 👍🎸
Such a great lesson!
Thanks! 😃
Another great lesson, thanks so much.
Thanks for watching Ronnie!

another great lesson from Blue! :)
Thanks David!
Great teacher
Thank you! 😃
...here I am watching your lessons so that I can incorporate perhaps in some way or another your blues playing into Brasilian songs... thanks...
Cool sounds like a great combination
Really good, clear and helpful thanks. Have you anything on building solos in 12 bar blues?
Outstanding! 🙏🙏🦋
Thank you! Lots more guitar lessons on the channel 🎸
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver been checking them out! All are very nicely done! Much appreciated! 🙏🙏🦋
Nice one Blue...thanks!
Thanks RB!
Nice combination chord +pentatonic lesson✌️👍

@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Great sound and finish! Great Lesson! Been looking at your lessons for a few months now! You are a really good teacher not going over the heads of the players that you are targeting! Thank You, Gary
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Hope you are out of harm's way of the fires, if you are still in Canada!
@@fake734 thanks! We are all okay here 😀👍

These lessons are beautifully done, Blue. Simple, clear, practical. Wish I had encountered these earlier in my guitar playing, they would’ve accelerated my learning considerably.
Thanks Rob!
You're a very good teacher and I'm glad I found your channel recently. Your lessons are full of great ideas. Thank you!
Thank you for saying!
Thanks for the great vid! And for all the videos! You are a very good teacher
Glad you like them thank you!!
I subscribed because I can relate to this. U unlocked the it.
Same here.
Thanks Steve!
Thanks Shaun!
Fantastic Blue! The concept of understanding how much space and time you must fit a "solo" in was completely lost to me. Of course, bringing it back to the 12-bar blues form is what the doctor ordered! Thanks!
Thanks Ty! Glad it helped.
This video hits right were I am at as an intermediate player. Like most other people I have watched literally hundreds of other guitar videos explaining soloing over the 12 bar blues but none have been as concise and to the point as this video. Thank you!
Awesome, thanks RetiredGuy!
Man another great lesson. Well explained. Still paging through your book on soloing. Good job. It's a little simple for me for where I am in my journey, but good for a beginner. I would recommend anybody who's beginning to complement these lessons with your book. Looking forward to the second book on soloing with some emphasis on major stuff. Keep it up!
Thanks Charles!
Great lesson
Thanks for watching!
I like u 🎉
Thanks! 😄
Nice.
Thanks Johnny, new video every Saturday
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver I subscribed. Your videos are full of substance. This is like one of those videos where you’re too afraid to ask the question. And you just walk us through it slowly and clearly,
my favorite lessons lately. great stuff!
Thanks Neil, appreciate your support!
This is a really great lesson I have learned so much from. Thank you
Thanks for watching 🎸 lots more coming to the channel 😀
Amazing content, friend. Thank you for sharing. Amazing lesson quality and info. You’re a champion.

Hey! I requested this!
Thanks man, bookmarking to watch in a few hours!😘
Thanks for the great suggestion!
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Thanks for the lesson! Next up, turnarounds theory?
I think that's a good idea too thanks. I'll put it on the list. It won't be this week though sorry. I'm working a few weeks ahead 😀
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver No hurry, take your time, I create videos too so I know it takes time (click my username and check out my channel when you get time) am subbed and along for the ride ☺🤘
Another suggestion:
Pentatonic, most people are comfortable playing in position 1 , and 2 (BBs box) but moving on to 3,4 and 5 - not so much, would be good to see some ideas there. Cheers!
Finally lightbulb on mixing major and minor along with chords in other location! TY
Glad you like it!
Great lesson! I will implement this into my practice routine. Thank you for the content 🙏🙏
Thanks Daniel!
This is blues style I am trying to learn as a beginner. How to know how much space for solo in 1 bar, think metronome will help. Hope se more this type blues lessons. Thanks
Cool thanks Mike! This video might also help with some ideas for phrasing: th-cam.com/video/LNe3bdHBdp4/w-d-xo.html
Awesome lesson to learn, practice and get confident enough to be able to include solo fills with the blues, please could you teach how to count and/or be in time, thanks a lot!
Thanks Rafa!
This for my parlor guitar porch blues and brews, thank you
Yeah that sounds about right!
I was stuck for a long time then i found this channel
Thanks Edward!
I am enjoying this channel and your lessons, thank you sir
Glad to hear it!
Thanks. An "ah ha" moment for this beginner!
Awesome, glad to hear it 😎
Thanks for the great videos !!
Thanks Matt!
I would prefer seeing Jimi Hendrix style playing like a maniac.
I do like Jimi 👍
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver I like your descriptions of the easy shape and the easy pattern but I also use the jimi hendrix E shape and the Jimi Hendrix A minor shape.
The thumb over the neck allows me to see where I am on the front board by looking at my thumb on the top. I can move up the front board very quickly find chords and hammer embellishments. I was hoping you could do a lesson on that.
Great lesson.
Thanks! 😃
This is awesome 🎉
Thanks Aliya!
Always great
Thanks Eric!
good job my friend ! awesome blue 👍👍
Thank you 👍
Very cool once again Blue! Actually just waiting for your soloing book. Supposed to arrive Monday.
Awesome thanks Dennis! Let me know if you have any questions about the book. In the book there is a link to download the audio samples and jam tracks.
For me, so useful thank you! Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
My dude, I get it. but you never "play CHORDS and SOLO at the SAME TIME" - you are switching off, task switching as oppose to multi-tasking. The kind of multi-tasking to actually play them at the same time is a godlike skill using multiple fingers of the picking hand (or maybe fingerpicks). I personally I had seen Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Adrian Legg, John McLaughlin, Arlo Guthrie, Jeff Beck, Jorma Kaukonen, Al Di Meola, and many accomplished classical guitarists do this. That madman, Di Meola does it in one SINGLE flat pick, no fingerpicking! I cannot explain how. Maybe he in fact, made a contract with Ole Scratch down at the Crossroads. But saw it, myself.
Thanks Ceres, we can also use chords in a solo, especially small tiads. Check out my video "The Incredible Chord Scale Connector" which does a similar thing.
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Ever the salesman. Still not the same thing.
