This is gold! Thanks bro. Productivity is a skill you need to build up over time... that's a very motivating statement!

Great video. So so true. The book Atomic Habits is exactly about this. Unfortunately I'm here 3.5 years later after you've uploaded it and it still doesn't have the views that it should. Just goes to show you the amount of people wasting their time on the quick fixes - me included.

Yes, this message of building productivity skills slowly and steadily resonates with me. It feels genuine that you offer no quick fixes or free lunches - just serious dedication to improvement over an extended period of time is what will make someone exceptional. Thanks for reinforcing what most of us know intuitively even while we reach out for that quick fix.

I listen to you, Shane, and I think - oh, thank God, I'm not mad after all. I've honed my focus skills when I did my PhD and I remember reading an article back then on the topic of attention. There are so many distractions in today's world that the way our perception works has already changed... our senses have changed to favour multitasking and peripheral vision. Deep attention and focus are 'old-fashioned', and, as you said, a skill that is quickly becoming precious because it's so rare. Thanks for this message. I am passing it on.

Thank you for your comment! No one could have guessed how deeply the smartphone and social media would affect human behavior. But here we are, in this crazy world...

Good points. And I like how you didn't put together a summary or quick take away segment at the end - it just re-enforces the point you were trying to make. And to me it is that you need to stick to something long enough to see the results. Its playing the long game.

Hi Shane - I really enjoy your channel! You have identified an age-old problem that is getting even worse with the "recent" advent of the Internet, and smart phones: The old distractions are now -constant (24/7) distractions.
On your topic of building long-term / long-time-perspective skills, I highly recommend a book: "Seven Habits of Highly Successful People" by Stephen Covey. I read this book in the mid-1990's. Within a year of finishing the book, I ran my first marathon, I tripled my income, and I met the love of my life. (We're still happily married, we have two teenagers now.) The book points out that when America was founded, the books & the wise advice of the day were all about building character & integrity & long-term success. A focus on long-term growth was the norm. Today - as you point out - it's all about Right Now. The web & smart phones are awesome tools - but they are constantly being mis-used by their users. (Just yesterday, I was talking to my teens about this & I compared it to properly using fire or water: The right amount will change your life with dramatic improvement. But if you have way too much, you will really regret it later.)
Anyway - YES, we all need to focus on building up the long-term character growth of ourselves & others. I really admire this trait in the people I meet who are immigrants to the US: They typically have a very long-term time perspective. They are saving their money - not for themselves, but so their kids can someday go to college, so the kids can provide well for the grandkids who aren't even born yet. They have a multi-generational mindset that is geared towards changing the long-term future, decades down the road. (Whether college is the right choice anymore is another topic: My guys have both chosen trade school.)
THANK YOU for taking the time to post this video. In a perfect world, it would be getting 1M views a day.
PS - I'm putting Bali on my bucket list: Hopefully I will buy you a cold beer soon, in a Bali beach bar.

I think we all suffer from "instant gratification" and you are right that focus, productivity, and action are skills that we need to learn and to realise that it takes time. I am a wedding photographer, and I look back and think..how long did it take me to learn how to take great pictures. Years and years, and I am still learning. Thanks Shane for your great content

You are correct and so informed. I'm reading Deep Work by Cal Newport and along with your message and my other reading during my retirement (age 75) I can only think this is such great stuff and so true. How can I use it now?

Hi Shane, thanks for your content on this channel - I’m glad I found it. I have a nerdy video question about this video... at 1:18 you have a cool text come up: “we crave instant gratification “
I’d like to start using something like this in my videos for CTA’s and pattern interrupts. Where do you recommend buying something similar? Where I can switch out the text easily and add the video file to my videos?
