I met Wildman Fischer once back in the 90's in L.A.. He was polite, but seemed nervous and worried as well. As if he didn't trust anyone at that point in his life. Afterwards, I felt a little bad having gotten pleasure over the years from his zaniness. I realized after meeting him that he was indeed a troubled man and that entertaining personality of his came at a great cost to him. I'll always love the man and his music and think about him as a real person probably more than any other musician that I've enjoyed over the years. Larry, your mind was indeed one of a kind.
Larry had tough, tough life--more than most could ever imagine. Was he exploited? In my opinion, not at all. Music seemed to bring him joy and enabled him, to some extent, to make sense of a world that made no sense to him due to his illness. That is a good thing, however fleeting such moments may have been. The power of art is that it can uplift the spirit and allow one to transcend the obstacles with which one is confronted in life, if not literally, perhaps spiritually. I own all of Larry's recordings. To listen to him perform brings me joy, not because he was schizophrenic and his songs are odd, but because while he sings he is truly engaged with what it is to be alive and living life with meaning. I find his music to be inspirational. Just like when the first caveman developed a hobby of beating a stick against a rock, because it sounded good, so too can anyone who loves music use it to make a better experience in life. Larry's music might be simple, but it had great meaning in his life. It also meant something to his small, but devoted legion of fans. Wherever you might be, Larry, just know that to some of us, you were bigger than The Beatles.
Rail Bird, what an exquisitely beautiful and profound tribute to WMF! I raised my 3 sons on No Cops, Miss Jennifer Jones, The Leaves are Falling, et al. They are all the more balanced for experiencing the genius of Larry’s recordings at a young age. Thank you, Rail Bird, for your wonderful words!
I met Larry "wild man" fisher back in the 1970's at a school dance. yep they hired wild man fisher to preform at a school dance in Spokane Wa in the 1970's. I have no idea how that happed but it did. He was the same person off stage as he was on stage. Wild. Man.
Well said. The last point you made is interesting about enjoying someone else’s “weakness”. I think of it more that this was who he was and he was eccentric and put himself out there, and there’s a lot to love in that. It’s acceptance, and if you accept it, that’s all that matters.
I was good friends with Larry in the mid 70's. He was a great guy, and if one would simply take him for what he was and not try to turn him into someone else, he could be as much a genius as any other composer. Sorry they took away The Pep, Larry!
My name is Larry! My name is Larry! RIP Wildman, I didn't hear until this video that you passed, one of my favorite memories growing up was hearing his stuff on Dr Demento on KMET on Sunday nights
In a sense, I was a Frank Zappa fan before I ever even heard his music. I had read a lot of interviews, not to mention his testifying before Congress, and admired the hell out of him for everything he had the guts to say, and the brains to say it so well. I had a "Zappa For President" sticker on my first car in 90/91. Obviously, I expected his music to be good, yet was still amazed by HOW good it was. I've only heard a few of his albums, though.
I really wish that Frank Zappa's wife had released the rights to Larry Wild Man Fischer's debut album. She never did and it's never been re-released. I guess because she never forgave the guy for throwing a bottle at her young child's head. I understand why they wouldn't want the Wild Man in their life after that but he was a troubled soul who couldn't help himself. He might've gotten some much needed royalties off that album if it was re-released later in his life. I would've bought it for sure. Oh well, it was not to be.
I have a copy....bought it as soon as it came out. I doubt that Frank made any money with that...he most certainly lost some, but the album was made, and that will live on .
I never, ever thought exploitation played a part in the singing career of Larry Fischer. He was a singer and a songwriter. He created songs on his own, and performed them on his own. Nobody ever made any money off him. (Did anybody ever think there was money to be made from his career? Other than Larry, that is.) Nothing Scary is a masterpiece of an LP and he knew it. (Though it is true that it was pieced together by Barnes & Barnes from fragments that they both prompted and recorded.) I love Larry Fischer primarily for his music. Sure, his story is interesting, and makes for a watchable/saleable documentary. But the story of his life, as expressed in song, is pure and carries not even a smidgen of the taint of exploitation.
The best Penn Points are always easy to spot as I sit and think about the subject while the advertisement at the end runs, ignoring it, but not closing the video.
This was hard to watch because of the constant cutting, hard to listen to for the inane background music, oh, and also, it had very little to do with Larry "Wild Man" Fischer.
Jacob Bassett I was hoping he'd tell me something I didn't already know from reading the tiny little comic biography Dennis Eichhorn wrote with various artists (especially J.R. Williams).
i never knew about wild man till howard stern was playing his music one day on sirius it was kinda cool now i wanna watch that derailroaded doc you mentioned. thanks peen and grat vid as always.
@DalionNeilHeart sure np. i think he just mentioned it once or twice maybe. i don't blame him for not reading the comments. i think he pays some attention to the tweets in twitter.
Very nice salute to Larry the Wild Man from Penn Jillette. Fortunately, Mr. Fischer recorded more than that one double-album on Zappa's label. He recorded three or four albums on Rhino Records that ARE available on CD. I have the one titled Nothing Scary. It has some great songs, some with musical backup. I especially recommend the song "Outside the Hospital". Also, Dennis Eichhorn's & J.R. Williams' illustrated book, "The Legend of Wild Man Fischer" is short & sweet..
Great points, as always. BTW: I've been, in the spirit of your latest show, explaining how your tricks could be (and probably are) done on episodes that are on TH-cam =P (your nail gun that "shoots" nails, for example)
I recognized the Wild Man on Telegraph Ave (in Berkeley). He was definitely off, I would say schizophrenic. I bought him a cup of coffee. He lamented that Zappa copyrighted the material, without which, presumably he would be as famous as the Beatles. We, as members of the Psycotic Pineapple were on a radio show in SF just after Penn, but he probably doesn’t remember it.
Frank Zappa came to hate the wildman after Fischer had a fit at Zappa's house and threw a glass ashtray that barely missed one of Zappa's kids' heads. Decades later, and the Zappa family trust is still sitting on a double album from Fischer.
I've asked you in another video, but I'm not sure if it was seen because the video was a few days old. I asked if perhaps you could give us your points on Fred Phelps?
