Black Diamond Presents: Nolan's Fourteen

  • BD Athlete Joe Grant was looking for an experience. He wanted it to be hard, and he wanted to push himself to “that edge” where he’d have to make difficult decisions. That’s why he chose Nolan’s 14-a rowdy jaunt through Colorado’s Sawatch range, which links 14 14,000-foot mountains over 100 miles. Needless to say, Joe found what he was looking for, and in the process, set the unsupported record for the route. This is his story.

    Make a long one pleaaaase !
    There is so much more to say on this feat, the intention, the dark an bright times Joe told about afterwards...
    Just the content of the bag and more fetails...
    That said the drawing is beautifull, text is interesting and picture are cool.

    Awesome short. Raw, both physically and emotionally. Thanks Joe for opening up on the process and the experience. Very inspiring.

    I can resonate with a lot of what Joe said. The more challenging the objective, the less room there is for all the bullshit of the civilized world, so we push ourselves until we reach a place where the mountains have stripped away all our pretensions leaving behind nothing but our essential selves. The mountains don't care who you think you are or how you try to present yourself in society, they take you as you truly are, an imperfect human with hopes and dreams and fears.
    This raw perspective is not easy to come by but I think everyone strives for it in their own way: by jumping out of planes, mastering an instrument, fighting for a cause, etc...

    Perfect video! It captures some detail into this too often vaguely described headspace. What happens to runners out there is like the more quiet physical space that surrounds them the louder their mental emotional thoughts can get. They are physically elite we can see that evidence in their record times. But aren’t they forging themselves into the mentally and emotionally elite as well? I’m grateful for the narrative here, job well done thank you!

    If you don’t have any introspection ,
    you close the door on any personal growth
    that such a challenging journey submerged in nature
    can provide and gift to us .
    Amazing effort and Fortitude
    Well done ! and thanks for sharing Joe

    Thats an incredible accomplishment. Most of those mountains drop a few thousand feet between each other. Just the valley between Belford and La Plata has a 4,000+ ft drop in elevation. Much respect

    Incredible filming by BD! This had to have been shot last year because right now there is tons of snow up there.

    Great film! However, if the drone shot starting at 0:38 is actually of Massive's south ridge (which I cannot confirm from just the looks), then, unless it's some crazy zoom lens, the film crew flew a drone in a designated Wilderness area. That is illegal and, even though it's a stupid rule, I encourage Black Diamond to bring it to the crew's attention, just so they know people are actually watching (and someone with a commercial drone license should know better!). I'm not trying to rip on the film crew, I'm just trying to keep our wild places wild. Cheers!

    That´s the whole fucking pount. Go out, be yourself and learn something about this wonderful creature. The seemingly difference between the man who climbs a mountain and the mountain that is been climbed, dissolves. There is only climbing itself. And the pure joy about the happening of the moment. Pure hapenings, everything is and will always be.

      I believe the filmer(s?) linked up with him several times during his run and filmed him as he did his thing; he talked about it in some interviews afterward. Yeah this is definitely a marketing winner for BD. But that's the tradeoff of being pro; you have to allow this sort of intrusion into your athletic/mountain endeavors in exchange for support.

    • @btfleming
      @btfleming 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said (on instagram and interviews) that he had very minimal contact with the crew. Only saw them for like 15 minutes over the 2 days.

    • @samjenkins8411
      @samjenkins8411 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also the film crew wasn't aloud to interfere. For example, on the last peak he got confused and continued to follow the ridge instead of heading down to the finish. The crew didn't say anything and had to watch as he descended the wrong descent, only to summit the mountain twice.
