    I'm so interested in seeing this baby learn to sign as a first/second language 😀 I'm gonna follow along.

    It’s amazing to me how babies develop language. Asl, vocally speaking, and even different languages. It’s a natural human thing.

    I grew up with a very close family friend who has 4 deaf children. I easily understand them and one of the deaf daughters married a deaf guy and they had a hearing kid who actually first started speaking in sign language. they had to take him to doctors to encourage him to speak like a hearing person. Took a year till he became confident and comfortable speaking in both languages. It’s an amazing environment. I miss them so much.

    Seeing her hand movements makes me think of the gurgles and coos that babies make. It funny because all babies do stuff like that... it’s not like they know sounds are more important for communication than gestures.

      I've read some really cool research on babies with signing parents, and it turns out as they get a little older they go through similar stages of babbling as babies learning a spoken language. At first they just kind of wave their hands, but then they start making approximations of shapes that are found in signs and repeating them a lot (sort of like saying babababa, it's not a word but they're practicing the little parts of a word) and then combining different shapes and so on. I guess Deaf parents already knew this but it was really neat to read about.

    The amount of attention and one on one interaction she's getting from both parent's is going to develop a strong bond with mum and dad and will let her develop at such a fast rate she's going to grow up to be an incredibly intellectual child

    She is too adorable!! thanks so much for sharing, the signed story was awesome and she looked so intrigued! I also noticed that Madison was sleeping on her belly and just wanted to share with anyone else reading this comment that generally the safest position for babies to sleep is on their back to minimize the risk of SIDS. Courtney and Zachary may have decided with their pediatrician on how to place her to sleep for a specific reason, but if anyone out here in the comments has a baby- please have that conversation with ur pediatrician first💛

    • @OurSignedWorld
      @OurSignedWorld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our pediatrician actually still recommends Madi to sleep on her back, however she rolls over in her sleep and has great head control so we have her sleep on her tummy. She sleeps well that way. But it is recommended for babies to sleep on their back for the first year

    • @gkbaker1
      @gkbaker1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't notice until you mentioned it, thanks! I forget when my little ones rolled over in their cribs. I had actually noticed the little toy ring with her in the crib. One of my biggest fears is my child choking on food or in the middle of the night on something--but it seems like the ring is large enough not to choke? @oursignedworld That's something you could ask your pediatrician about, if toys can be in the crib...and not saying this in a judgmental way at all.

    • @Barbiehf001
      @Barbiehf001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OurSignedWorld thanks for your reply! I figured that either way you, have your reasons and you know Madi better than anyone! I commented this because people can be influenced by their favorite content creators to varying degrees. There are also tons of people online in general who may stumble upon the comment, so I’m just hoping to encourage other new parents to have conversations with their pediatrician on crib safety :) thanks again for sharing, I love your vlogs!

    My mom just had my younger sister and she was born deaf and now even though it’s not “ideal” we all get to bond over learning asl. And I think it would be cool to talk to people without having other people butt-in/eavesdrop. Maybe people will annoy us about using sign language but idk. I like to think about the positive things though. At least we can even communicate with her😁

    • @OurSignedWorld

    I don't sign, I know just few words in asl and lis, but I honestly find this way of reading books extremely relaxing, I wouldn't mind if you would do a video with an entire book for older kids for us, like Bear don't eat egg sandwiches or something, I think it would really help me to sleep 😊

    Do you have any suggestions for a hearing family on how to teach young children ASL (mommy wants to learn too!)? Obviously immersion is best but COVID is not making that possible and we're not familiar with the Deaf community in our area. I'm planning to reach out after COVID ebbs, bit any suggestions in the meantime?

      Sometimes the captions settings can get messed up. If you go into the settings menu (the little gear on the bottom right of the frame) and click on 'Subtitles/CC' and then click on the underlined 'Options' in the top right corner of the menu it will take you to a menu where you can adjust and/or kind of customize how the captions appear for you. @@carlasuannepoohlockett3259 I don't know a lot of sign language either. But from the little I do know, the captions do include what he is signing (in the English captions anyway). I know in other videos of theirs they have had a C: when the words are from Courtney and Z: when they are from Zach, but they didn't do that in this one. I don't know if that is any more helpful though.
