I quit junkfood and got my act together when I realized my wife and 4 daugters (one autistic) would be in chaos if I died young. Find a sense of purpose greater than yourself and you can change any habbit.
I believe in what they’re saying. I recently lost over 100 lbs after quitting my antidepressants and anti anxiety pills that weren’t working. I pay very very close attention to what I eat now and make sure my gut health is good with daily probiotics, vitamins, supplements, etc. I can’t say for certain it’s the gut health, maybe just the self confidence and freedom that comes with removing huge amounts of weight of your body, but I can’t think of a time where I felt happier.
It's amazing how often people report feeling better after losing weight. It's like how I am with exercise: when I work out I feel better and get more energy and that makes it easier to go do a workout. I think it's the same with losing weight, when you do something good for your body, you feel better about it and that gives you more motivation to stay on the right path.
Picked up a can of broccoli cheese soup the other day out of curiosity. One of the first ingredients? Sugar. Wtf is sugar doing in broccoli cheese soup? Easy: to keep you coming back for more. Sugar isn't a food. It's a drug.
Literally almost anything you're buying is loaded with added sugar, not only is it extremely addictive it's also super unhealthy, if you want broccoli cheese soup make it yourself, unless you want it with cancer inducing preservatives and sugar.
Sugar is addictive. Some studies have even said its as addictive as cocaine without the extreme withdrawal when quitting. But there is still withdrawal from sugar like depression, anxiety, insomnia, cognitive disruption, nausea, fatigue and cravings. Sugar releases endogenous opiods in the brain which causes a rush. Sugar causes the body to release a lot dopamine which starts the addiction process.
For anyone out there suffering from chronic pain, this guy just explained why I went from being bed ridden with pain at least 2 weeks out of the month to having that happen for a day every few months. How? CBD oil, diet, and sleep changes. My body wasn't handling stress and wasn't able to fuel itself properly. As for the blue light, that is something I have been working on the last few weeks and it's helping my sleep, too. I don't stare at a phone often, but I do work on a pc 12 hours a day. I also removed anything with red lights from my bedroom ( like tv buttons, alarm clocks, etc). These small changes are making a huge difference. It's taken a long time to get here, but I am slowly becoming my full, healthy self again. Our bodies are going through shock from the modern world we grew up in. The more I get it under control, the more exercise I can do, the better I feel. It's all about baby steps. You have to turn off the inflammatory response in your body.
I solved my junk food problem the same way I solved my narcotic addiction; if it's not in the house, there's a zero percent chance of me consuming what I'm trying to avoid. If I'm not around anybody who uses narcotics, I won't be able to get a hold on those drugs. It sounds too good to be true but it was the best most straight forward solution to my problems. All you need is a shit ton of willpower until you no longer crave the drug that you desire.
The thing I struggle understanding are the people you know who have always been physical fit, who are able to just have one or two Oreos, one slice of pizza, one piece of candy, and not crave anymore and go about their day. They may think these kinds foods taste incredible, but they don’t seem to struggle saying no nearly as bad as people who are easily addicted to sugar. In my most fit state when I ate clean for almost a year, one bite of a cookie would instantly pull me back into wanting to binge. It took a TON of willpower to tell myself no, and I would have to fight the urge for 30 minutes or more until it eventually went away. It’s like if you have a past of indulging in binge eating, that urge will live inside of you forever.
Im a bit of an opposite. Been in clean diet for so long, and when i get a “cheat” meal because of some family event of some sort, when intake a bite of a sweet or salty chip, im easily repulsed after one serving. I dont know why, like a sip of coke shocks me with its sweetness
I think it has sth to do with the "palate saturation", which varies widely. For instance, I love one beer, the second one is nice, but the third and the next beers are meh. Very easy to stop drinking for that reason.
I used to be like you. I'd go clean for a while and then lose it after on3 cookie. The only things I've changed are going from a super stressful job. After lowering my stress level I was able to only have one beer and be ok. Then once I stopped abusing alcohol I was able to stop binge eating. I get the cravings but they go away after one cookie.
some supermarkets actually use colored lights to disguise spoiling food. for example, bad potatoes turn green, so they use pinkish lights on the potatoes
It took me 4 weeks of misery after I quit sugar to not crave it again...I had withdrawal symptoms and got so sick the first week It really woke me up to how addictive it actually is. Even the “healthy” stuff in the health and well-being section at the supermarket are full of sugar once you start reading labels- some have even more to compensate for their shitty taste.
I've come to the realization that I'm not supposed to be content or satisfied. Your supposed to be hungry, not calorie restricted hungry but uneasy. It drives life forward and not down into a lazy chair.
Being hungry sometimes also installs good food discipline. Eating until full whenever hungry is guaranteed to cause long term weight gain, especially if food has poor nutritional quality along with a lack of activity.

I was overweight for the longest time and now that I'm thin after a lot of trial and error I can confirm, the "everything in moderation" mantra is bad advice when the foods we eat today are engineered to be hyper-addictive. You have to give things up.
than you weren't taking good oil or not enough. it should of at least calmed your nerves, made you sleep well. I don't know what you wanted to take it for, but high Mg quality oil does have many benefits.
One of the problems is people's inability to cook. Luckily i live in Asia, so i was forced to learn to cook because the western food options are either super expensive, or super disgusting. So now i know some pretty decent simple recipes of heart, so i can just be in autopilot mode, know exactly what ingredients to buy, know exactly how to cook it. But if you don't know how to cook, taking that step to buy loads of ingredients, to potentially fuck it up when you attempt to cook, is a daunting prospect. I think that's another reason people eat only convenience food
I agree that we shouldn't feel guilty when we buckle under the constant barrage of highly addictive and readily available junk food. It can be extremely challenging for those trying to eliminate junk food from their diet. The issue of morality comes up when there are people who know they are creating something that will highjack your biological wiring, be addictive and unhealthy, and push to get it on the market and fight to keep it there. That's the reason why it's so hard. We should all be furious that this is what our food landscape has become.
This guy is spot on. Guilt and shame are shitty motivators, they just don't work long-term. And you also can't look at people as totally seperate from their environment.
Shame is a good motivator I think. Once you learn that you can be not ashamed of yourself, then you can start using shame to make you stronger and tell you when you’re slipping. Not enough love to motivate people effectively. Not enough hope being consumed 😞

@@willmosse3684 both comments are true. We can explain why we get addicted to bad things but that doesn't make it right to do and doing it shows a lack of self control. That's what we have our frontal lobe for so we can make conscious decision making based on knowledge because sometimes instinct betrays us or in the case of modern addictive foods are instincts are taken advantage of by people that know how to exploit it.
Something that I didn't really understand for a long time that I assume a lot of people don't understand either is that just because you have cravings doesn't mean that you are actually hungry and need food. The cravings are actually somewhat of a withdrawal from not having the junk food you normally eat and if you eat a healthy diet for long enough eventually those cravings will deminish and go away.

If you're addicted to junk food do a 3 day water fast. Add sodium and potassium to your water to prevent total weakness. If you can make it through that, you will not want for the junk food any more. I made it and I'm a puss. You can too. Take control
I know I'm going to date myself on this one but when I was a kid we didn't have access to junk food in school. Even the gas station didn't have much of it. I had to walk 8 blocks to the corner store to get junk food. Yes it was uphill both ways.
Yup, extremely easy access to high sugary snacks is a modern problem. Soldiers in WW1 their christmas treat was a chocolate bar which at the time was extremely coveted.
For anyone watching this and feels super intimidated by not knowing where to start for affordable whole foods: Stock your pantry with dry foods: 1) Grains (Brown rice, Quinoa, Bulgur, Amaranth etc) and 2) Lentils/legumes (Brown lentils, green lentils, red lentils, chick peas, kidney beans, etc). 3) On weekly basis, get fresh produce: just think of all your favorite leaves, vegetables and fruits that grow above the ground. Remember to keep good variety. Based on lancet recommendation, fill your plate with half plate of the category 3 and a quarter of category 1 and 2 each.
I only eat junk food when my mom brings it home. Unfortunately thats the only thing she ever gets. Luckily I'm an adult now and can go buy my own stuff now, but growing up I really suffered from it. I grew up on junk food, McDonald's, etc.
For me the best way to quitting junk food was to slowly phase it out of my diet, Over the course of a few months. It’s pure hell at first since the body is so used to all the sugar and poison. for the first few weeks I was terribly bloated and had the best headaches of my life. I was pissed at everything and everyone, but I stuck with it and eventually just like rough waves in the ocean all the pain went away and I felt amazing. I still eat some chips chocolates, and soda from time to time but now I’m not completely controlled by my addiction to it like I was. I’ve since learned the key to everything in this life is moderation and once you’ve overcome the addiction to junk food and candy the mental clarity alone makes it all worth it, when I think about who I was I think to myself “never again”. We all have the power to change our mindset and lives. Open your heart and mind and you will find a way

Wow. I do the exact thing that he describes...now I want a sweet thing...now I want a salty thing again, back and forth, etc. I recently lost about 20 pounds from restricting junk food for like half a year, but the past two weeks I went crazy with it again and gained 5 pounds. It's really hard to stop.
I'm started Keto about 2 weeks ago. Began with a 5 day fast right out the box which was tough because of my soda addiction and diet of TV dinners, fast food, and just poor quality shit all the way around. 1st thing I've noticed is that I used to have this clinging on mucus thing that has been around even after quitting smoking and drinking over a year and a half ago- it just wouldn't go away. Well, into week 2, it's almost gone entirely. My immune system feels much better. Some swelling I had in a leg has decreased significantly. Getting some achy joints but using supplements to help with that and getting better as I restructure/ adhere to a new lifestyle. If your on the fence, give it a shot, especially if you're in your mid to late 40's and up. Can't believe I used to eat the way I did. Thanks Joe for spreading the word.
Straight up I'd just like to say to the opening video chat that I have Crohn's disease. My levels of inflammation in the gut are very high and I eat a traditional home made Greek diet. Healthy as anything. Olive oil, fruits, vegetables, and not junk at all and it can still happen , however, yes people should stop eating foods that are saturated in sugars, fats, preservatives and all things unhealthy. Fats are important for men especially as it increases libido. Cholesterol is the main/one of the main building blocks for testosterone. Men especially need cholesterol and fat or they will have low sex drive and be wimps like a lot of men today who should just get sex changes.
It is easy to quit if you stop spiking insulin levels,which is what causes the cravings in the first place. Sugar is bad because it is a high glycemic carbohydrate (sends insulin levels through the roof),but so are many other carbs (white bread,rice cakes are worse than sugar...). Nobody has the willpower to avoid the cravings caused by low blood sugar,so don't spike insulin and you won't need any willpower because your blood sugar will be stable.
Well not only that but many people don’t understand that if you were to just not eat sugary foods, your body has a self regulating blood sugar system. If your blood sugar is low - your pancreas will release a hormone called glucagon which breaks down the glycogen storages into useable Glucose.
People also need to understand that daily caloric intake is the biggest factor, eating timing is less relevant. So people get hungry during lunch or in the morning and think they will do their body harm if they dont eat. The treshold for eating bad foods is a lot lower with this thinking.
You are partially correct, but all the glorious, wonderful delicious things that spike blood sugar are the things that I want and enjoy the most. I've never eaten anything in my life that isn't better with bread. I was a vegetarian for 10 years until I had health issues and had to resume eating meat, but if I could trade the meat for the bread (without the negative health consequences), I'd do it in a heartbeat. I like vegetables, but I've never craved or enjoyed any vegetable even half as much as I enjoyed (past-tense, I don't eat it now anyway) bread. While not equal with bread, popcorn and rice are also high on the list of things I can't have but adore. I quit eating chips several years ago but i still crave them like crazy. Not eating insulin spiking foods definitely makes it easier to avoid those foods as the cravings are lessened, but will power still plays a very significant role, for me anyway. And I am definitely an all-or-nothing type of person, I cannot do moderation, which is probably good since I shouldn't eat junk anyway. If I could do moderation, I would probably try to justify eating it.
I needed to hear this! I went from 218 to 153 going vegitarianarian, portion control, cutting out junk. But in the last yr I've gained 20-25 back. The past 2 days have been a battle trying to not eat sweets & not eating when I'm not actually not hungry. It's insane how hard I have to fight w/ myself- but I'm determined. I cannot get super big again, but I'm headed there if I don't get it in check... Thanks for the motivation!!
My wife and i have a really bad problem with food. I think ours is emotional and habit based. And crikey we have piled it on. Very difficult to manage bad habits.
Don’t eat things that come in a box, wrapper, or a can. And drink alot water. Also, learn to move around a little too. I try to walk at least 6 miles a day, and if I do go to that he grocery store, I park far away from the front for and once I put groceries in my car I walk the shopping cat back to the store’s front door.
I'm very thankful for this information. Years of being below the poverty level as well as raised in a way that i was allowed to have all this shitty food in my life, and lack of discipline has led me to a point that i'm now 33 years old, 320 lbs 5'11" and already have congestive heart failure, depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, and WELL on my way to diabetes. I recently got this wake up call with CHF and I know my body is desperately crying out for healthy changes, but I feel trapped and stuck. I feel like I hate everything that's good for me and love everything that's killing me.

Last year I was 238 (5'10") with ZERO energy, no motivation, major depression, and I knew I wasn't a bad person, but I was killing myself from the inside with bad mental and physical food. I'm down to 208 now and making healthier choices but it does take work, especially when you drink alcohol and make excuses. Just keep at it man. Steamed vegetables, walk around the block, get a personal trainer. You can make the changes you know that you need to.
It's everywhere! Junk food is addictive. Even the patterns and colors of the packaging are designed to influence you. There's never an easy way to reseal the bag for later use. I havent had a single scrap of junk in over 3 months and I still get tempted.

The reason I made my comment was that some people in the comments think that stores stock refrigerated goods on the side in an attempt to hide it from the customers since it's not as easy to sell as the "junk food". What I'm trying to say is that stores stock fresh goods on the side because it's space and heat efficient.

Jocko Willink said that "The internet is developed by proffesionals that have the sole pupose of getting you hooked", which explains why habits like surfing facebook, playing video games, or just browsing in general is so easy to get lost in hours past bedtime.
A major aspect isn't that cooking is difficult, it's just everything is so much easier and people talk themselves out of it. Cooking = shopping, planning, cooking, eating, cleaning up. Takeaway = order on phone, turns up at door, eat, throw box in bin. Everyone makes out like cooking is a chore when its actually quite calming and enjoyable plus you can be proud of it.
Hey guys i've struggled with this before so maybe i can help you if you're reading this. If you cant get away and struggle with junk and processed crap try incorporating 2 real whole fruits or vegetables a day in to your diet and taking out one processed one. So add a Banana and some Carrots or Sweet potatoes and take out the Chips. It might be a little tough at first but you're retraining your taste buds and you will start to notice the difference and make healthy conscious decisions. I hope this helps someone.
It is hard. My last junk meal was pizza last week Monday evening. Since then I've been eating whole foods only, no junk or preservatives or frozen junk or sweets. I'm almost a week in and I have headaches, terrible sleep patterns, restless, irritated. But they say this is temporary...like getting over drugs or alcohol
Anxiety is 💯 caused by food. As someone who struggled from crippling panic attacks and loss of coordination then switched to all real food organic etc I healed my autoimmune. 💯💯💯💯 Also exercise is underrated. Love your videos Joe.
used to be a small tiny store... now every supermarket is designed to make you buy 10 different types of cheeses; 20 different types of cold cuts; 5 types of pancake /waffle mix; 9 different type of milk including soy, silk, almond, cow, goat, donkey, rat and some whole food stores carry human breast milk ( very expensive )
funny ive had the experience of getting sick of one type of food. usually happens with pasta or rice. i can eat a certain amount of it before i feel sick eating it even though im still hungry and could eat other things

I can fast for 12 hours plus hard work. A lot has to do with mental discipline and making smart decisions about taking care of your health for the long haul in order to prevent lots of medical bills in the future and possibly prolong death too.
Ummm, not all anxiety disorders are caused by inflammation. I agree from my own experience with changing my own diet that an inflammatory diet can make anxiety worse, but some anxiety (like PTSD for example, which I have dealt with in the past) is cause by trauma. Mine was childhood trauma which literally changed the structures of my brain as it was developing, causing a chemical problem. It can be mitigated by healthy diet, exercise, and therapy, but it will never completely go away. So let's not be ignorant about mental health and pretend that it can be cured with a dietary change. That being said, I agree with pretty much everything else he said.
I still have roots in a belief that mental illness can be cured, (without medication, I'm pretty against putting any of that in my body, but respect people's decisions to do it to themselves)
Thanks for your comment but never say never. I have friends who got rid of anxiety and have had pretty bad childhoods. It's about lifestyle changes (and a part of that is diet)
Tiger Lark correct! But childhood trama can lead to adrenal fatigue. Which can cause you to crave sweets and salty foods. Then you get into the addiction. It’s messed up man. I’m recovering from childhood abuse. I think it’s a lifetime challenge that can be managed when you have the right tools. 🙏❤️🙏 for your recovery 🙏
Agree so much. The gut microbiom cult is really annoying and cult like. Everything is connected to the gut. Perhaps your gut changes after trauma, Did they even think of that? No its all about eating a good diet. I have tried, it virtually does nothing for mental health
I think there is a way to find balance. I eat all whole foods 80% of the time with the other 20% being minimal ingredient junk foods like dark chocolate or organic chips & popcorn ect. All it takes is to be conscious when eating the less healthy things and recognizing why it's easy to go overboard. Once you're aware the likelihood of you over eating decreases and you don't end up feeling deprived of the occasional treat :)

Kylie Marsh Exactly! Most of my life growing up i would go on strict clean diets, lose a ton a weight and then binge out on the wooorst junk food. When i stopped listening to everyone saying "this food is bad, don't eat this ever" i found balance and honestly stopped craving lots of bad things. I don't think theres any one size fits all approach to diet, what ever diet helps you ensure you get the majority of your nutrients from whole foods is the best way to go. No need to stress over treats.
I found weed to give me enough dopamine that junk food makes me feel kinda like shit and I don't feel the happiness people talk about from junk food. So in a nut shell, weed made me eat healthy
I've been 50 lbs overweight, and beat that issue like a pinata It does come down to mental strength, and getting your priorities straight. If you think like a winner, you become a winner. If you can't win with your diet, forget the really difficult things.
I started following Anthony William medical medium protocols and my life has done a complete 180. All my autoimmune conditions gone. Anxiety and depression gone. More energy, not hard to wake up in the morning anymore, don’t feel like crashing in the afternoon, don’t need as much sleep 🙌🏼
I finally knew the effects junk food (high sodium & high sugar) had on me, not when I stopped eating junk food; but when I had on a healthy diet for some time and then temporarily switched back to junk food. Just a couple seconds after swallowing a snicker bar, I felt my heart beating fast on the pulse of my neck, even my breathing shortened like I was out of breath; this just goes on to show you how a healthy diet (no processed food) keeps your body “quiet” in a healthy way by maintaining a low blood pressure and heart rate. Paying attention and acknowledging the bad side effects from junk food is one of powerful ways to help you not eat them again! It’ll take time, but you’ll see yourself slowly and naturally quit certain snacks & drinks here and there over the years!
The more in-shape you get the easier it is to reject junk food. All it takes is one look in the mirror to realize that you probably enjoy having a sexy body that stays with you 24/7 vs eating junk food which gives pleasure for only as long as the food is in your mouth.

But those meds cause you to retain water so a lot of the weight you lost was just water weight.

Sugar is addictive. Some studies have even said its as addictive as cocaine without the extreme withdrawal when quitting. But there is still withdrawal from sugar like depression, anxiety, insomnia, cognitive disruption, nausea, fatigue and cravings. Sugar releases endogenous opiods in the brain which causes a rush. Sugar causes the body to release a lot dopamine which starts the addiction process.

Idk dude. I’m a cook. And I’ll tell you. After awhile cooking at work and at home becomes boring and draining. However only my experience.
For anyone out there suffering from chronic pain, this guy just explained why I went from being bed ridden with pain at least 2 weeks out of the month to having that happen for a day every few months. How? CBD oil, diet, and sleep changes. My body wasn't handling stress and wasn't able to fuel itself properly. As for the blue light, that is something I have been working on the last few weeks and it's helping my sleep, too. I don't stare at a phone often, but I do work on a pc 12 hours a day. I also removed anything with red lights from my bedroom ( like tv buttons, alarm clocks, etc). These small changes are making a huge difference. It's taken a long time to get here, but I am slowly becoming my full, healthy self again. Our bodies are going through shock from the modern world we grew up in. The more I get it under control, the more exercise I can do, the better I feel. It's all about baby steps. You have to turn off the inflammatory response in your body.
I solved my junk food problem the same way I solved my narcotic addiction; if it's not in the house, there's a zero percent chance of me consuming what I'm trying to avoid. If I'm not around anybody who uses narcotics, I won't be able to get a hold on those drugs. It sounds too good to be true but it was the best most straight forward solution to my problems. All you need is a shit ton of willpower until you no longer crave the drug that you desire.

The thing I struggle understanding are the people you know who have always been physical fit, who are able to just have one or two Oreos, one slice of pizza, one piece of candy, and not crave anymore and go about their day. They may think these kinds foods taste incredible, but they don’t seem to struggle saying no nearly as bad as people who are easily addicted to sugar. In my most fit state when I ate clean for almost a year, one bite of a cookie would instantly pull me back into wanting to binge. It took a TON of willpower to tell myself no, and I would have to fight the urge for 30 minutes or more until it eventually went away. It’s like if you have a past of indulging in binge eating, that urge will live inside of you forever.
Im a bit of an opposite. Been in clean diet for so long, and when i get a “cheat” meal because of some family event of some sort, when intake a bite of a sweet or salty chip, im easily repulsed after one serving. I dont know why, like a sip of coke shocks me with its sweetness
I think it has sth to do with the "palate saturation", which varies widely. For instance, I love one beer, the second one is nice, but the third and the next beers are meh. Very easy to stop drinking for that reason.

I used to be like you. I'd go clean for a while and then lose it after on3 cookie. The only things I've changed are going from a super stressful job. After lowering my stress level I was able to only have one beer and be ok. Then once I stopped abusing alcohol I was able to stop binge eating. I get the cravings but they go away after one cookie.

It took me 4 weeks of misery after I quit sugar to not crave it again...I had withdrawal symptoms and got so sick the first week It really woke me up to how addictive it actually is. Even the “healthy” stuff in the health and well-being section at the supermarket are full of sugar once you start reading labels- some have even more to compensate for their shitty taste.

One of the problems is people's inability to cook. Luckily i live in Asia, so i was forced to learn to cook because the western food options are either super expensive, or super disgusting.
So now i know some pretty decent simple recipes of heart, so i can just be in autopilot mode, know exactly what ingredients to buy, know exactly how to cook it.
But if you don't know how to cook, taking that step to buy loads of ingredients, to potentially fuck it up when you attempt to cook, is a daunting prospect. I think that's another reason people eat only convenience food

I agree that we shouldn't feel guilty when we buckle under the constant barrage of highly addictive and readily available junk food. It can be extremely challenging for those trying to eliminate junk food from their diet. The issue of morality comes up when there are people who know they are creating something that will highjack your biological wiring, be addictive and unhealthy, and push to get it on the market and fight to keep it there. That's the reason why it's so hard. We should all be furious that this is what our food landscape has become.
This guy is spot on. Guilt and shame are shitty motivators, they just don't work long-term. And you also can't look at people as totally seperate from their environment.

@@willmosse3684 both comments are true. We can explain why we get addicted to bad things but that doesn't make it right to do and doing it shows a lack of self control. That's what we have our frontal lobe for so we can make conscious decision making based on knowledge because sometimes instinct betrays us or in the case of modern addictive foods are instincts are taken advantage of by people that know how to exploit it.
Something that I didn't really understand for a long time that I assume a lot of people don't understand either is that just because you have cravings doesn't mean that you are actually hungry and need food. The cravings are actually somewhat of a withdrawal from not having the junk food you normally eat and if you eat a healthy diet for long enough eventually those cravings will deminish and go away.

I know I'm going to date myself on this one but when I was a kid we didn't have access to junk food in school. Even the gas station didn't have much of it. I had to walk 8 blocks to the corner store to get junk food. Yes it was uphill both ways.
Yup, extremely easy access to high sugary snacks is a modern problem. Soldiers in WW1 their christmas treat was a chocolate bar which at the time was extremely coveted.
For anyone watching this and feels super intimidated by not knowing where to start for affordable whole foods:
Stock your pantry with dry foods:
1) Grains (Brown rice, Quinoa, Bulgur, Amaranth etc) and
2) Lentils/legumes (Brown lentils, green lentils, red lentils, chick peas, kidney beans, etc).
3) On weekly basis, get fresh produce: just think of all your favorite leaves, vegetables and fruits that grow above the ground. Remember to keep good variety.
Based on lancet recommendation, fill your plate with half plate of the category 3 and a quarter of category 1 and 2 each.
I only eat junk food when my mom brings it home. Unfortunately thats the only thing she ever gets. Luckily I'm an adult now and can go buy my own stuff now, but growing up I really suffered from it. I grew up on junk food, McDonald's, etc.

For me the best way to quitting junk food was to slowly phase it out of my diet, Over the course of a few months. It’s pure hell at first since the body is so used to all the sugar and poison. for the first few weeks I was terribly bloated and had the best headaches of my life. I was pissed at everything and everyone, but I stuck with it and eventually just like rough waves in the ocean all the pain went away and I felt amazing. I still eat some chips chocolates, and soda from time to time but now I’m not completely controlled by my addiction to it like I was. I’ve since learned the key to everything in this life is moderation and once you’ve overcome the addiction to junk food and candy the mental clarity alone makes it all worth it, when I think about who I was I think to myself “never again”. We all have the power to change our mindset and lives. Open your heart and mind and you will find a way

I do the exact thing that he describes...now I want a sweet thing...now I want a salty thing again, back and forth, etc. I recently lost about 20 pounds from restricting junk food for like half a year, but the past two weeks I went crazy with it again and gained 5 pounds. I'm started Keto about 2 weeks ago. Began with a 5 day fast right out the box which was tough because of my soda addiction and diet of TV dinners, fast food, and just poor quality shit all the way around. 1st thing I've noticed is that I used to have this clinging on mucus thing that has been around even after quitting smoking and drinking over a year and a half ago- it just wouldn't go away. Well, into week 2, it's almost gone entirely. My immune system feels much better. Some swelling I had in a leg has decreased significantly. Getting some achy joints but using supplements to help with that and getting better as I restructure/ adhere to a new lifestyle. If your on the fence, give it a shot, especially if you're in your mid to late 40's and up. Can't believe I used to eat the way I did. Thanks Joe for spreading the word.

It is easy to quit if you stop spiking insulin levels,which is what causes the cravings in the first place. Sugar is bad because it is a high glycemic carbohydrate (sends insulin levels through the roof),but so are many other carbs (white bread,rice cakes are worse than sugar...). Nobody has the willpower to avoid the cravings caused by low blood sugar,so don't spike insulin and you won't need any willpower because your blood sugar will be stable.

You are partially correct, but all the glorious, wonderful delicious things that spike blood sugar are the things that I want and enjoy the most. I've never eaten anything in my life that isn't better with bread. I was a vegetarian for 10 years until I had health issues and had to resume eating meat, but if I could trade the meat for the bread (without the negative health consequences), I'd do it in a heartbeat. I like vegetables, but I've never craved or enjoyed any vegetable even half as much as I enjoyed (past-tense, I don't eat it now anyway) bread. While not equal with bread, popcorn and rice are also high on the list of things I can't have but adore. I quit eating chips several years ago but i still crave them like crazy. Not eating insulin spiking foods definitely makes it easier to avoid those foods as the cravings are lessened, but will power still plays a very significant role, for me anyway. And I am definitely an all-or-nothing type of person, I cannot do moderation, which is probably good since I shouldn't eat junk anyway. If I could do moderation, I would probably try to justify eating it.

My wife and i have a really bad problem with food. I think ours is emotional and habit based. And crikey we have piled it on. Very difficult to manage bad habits.
Don’t eat things that come in a box, wrapper, or a can. And drink alot water. Also, learn to move around a little too. I try to walk at least 6 miles a day, and if I do go to that he grocery store, I park far away from the front for and once I put groceries in my car I walk the shopping cat back to the store’s front door.
I'm very thankful for this information. Years of being below the poverty level as well as raised in a way that i was allowed to have all this shitty food in my life, and lack of discipline has led me to a point that i'm now 33 years old, 320 lbs 5'11" and already have congestive heart failure, depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, and WELL on my way to diabetes. I recently got this wake up call with CHF and I know my body is desperately crying out for healthy changes, but I feel trapped and stuck. I feel like I hate everything that's good for me and love everything that's killing me.

Last year I was 238 (5'10") with ZERO energy, no motivation, major depression, and I knew I wasn't a bad person, but I was killing myself from the inside with bad mental and physical food. I'm down to 208 now and making healthier choices but it does take work, especially when you drink alcohol and make excuses. Just keep at it man. Steamed vegetables, walk around the block, get a personal trainer. You can make the changes you know that you need to.
I think often it is easier with people around you to support you and make healthy decisions together.

It's everywhere! Junk food is addictive. Even the patterns and colors of the packaging are designed to influence you. There's never an easy way to reseal the bag for later use. I havent had a single scrap of junk in over 3 months and I still get tempted.

Hey guys i've struggled with this before so maybe i can help you if you're reading this. If you cant get away and struggle with junk and processed crap try incorporating 2 real whole fruits or vegetables a day in to your diet and taking out one processed one. So add a Banana and some Carrots or Sweet potatoes and take out the Chips. It might be a little tough at first but you're retraining your taste buds and you will start to notice the difference and make healthy conscious decisions. I hope this helps someone.

used to be a small tiny store... now every supermarket is designed to make you buy 10 different types of cheeses; 20 different types of cold cuts; 5 types of pancake /waffle mix; 9 different type of milk including soy, silk, almond, cow, goat, donkey, rat and some whole food stores carry human breast milk ( very expensive )

I agree from my own experience with changing my own diet that an inflammatory diet can make anxiety worse, but some anxiety (like PTSD for example, which I have dealt with in the past) is cause by trauma. Mine was childhood trauma which literally changed the structures of my brain as it was developing, causing a chemical problem. It can be mitigated by healthy diet, exercise, and therapy, but it will never completely go away. So let's not be ignorant about mental health and pretend that it can be cured with a dietary change. That being said, I agree with pretty much everything else he said.

I still have roots in a belief that mental illness can be cured, (without medication, I'm pretty against putting any of that in my body, but respect people's decisions to do it to themselves)
Thanks for your comment but never say never. I have friends who got rid of anxiety and have had pretty bad childhoods. It's about lifestyle changes (and a part of that is diet)

I think there is a way to find balance. I eat all whole foods 80% of the time with the other 20% being minimal ingredient junk foods like dark chocolate or organic chips & popcorn ect. All it takes is to be conscious when eating the less healthy things and recognizing why it's easy to go overboard. Once you're aware the likelihood of you over eating decreases and you don't end up feeling deprived of the occasional treat :)

Kylie Marsh Exactly! Most of my life growing up i would go on strict clean diets, lose a ton a weight and then binge out on the wooorst junk food. When i stopped listening to everyone saying "this food is bad, don't eat this ever" i found balance and honestly stopped craving lots of bad things. I don't think theres any one size fits all approach to diet, what ever diet helps you ensure you get the majority of your nutrients from whole foods is the best way to go. No need to stress over treats.

I finally knew the effects junk food (high sodium & high sugar) had on me, not when I stopped eating junk food; but when I had on a healthy diet for some time and then temporarily switched back to junk food. Just a couple seconds after swallowing a snicker bar, I felt my heart beating fast on the pulse of my neck, even my breathing shortened like I was out of breath; this just goes on to show you how a healthy diet (no processed food) keeps your body “quiet” in a healthy way by maintaining a low blood pressure and heart rate. Paying attention and acknowledging the bad side effects from junk food is one of powerful ways to help you not eat them again! It’ll take time, but you’ll see yourself slowly and naturally quit certain snacks & drinks here and there over the years!
The more in-shape you get the easier it is to reject junk food. All it takes is one look in the mirror to realize that you probably enjoy having a sexy body that stays with you 24/7 vs eating junk food which gives pleasure for only as long as the food is in your mouth.
