  • This video covers the awesome late October timeframe hunting public land. The first buck that came by was the one I set my goal to try and hunt. The season is long and there is still plenty of time to get after it.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing I like about the One X2 is the One-touch record option, which is quicker. Not sure why they haven't added it to the One R. The One R can do loop mode, but I've had reliability issues with that function.

    • @timeintheoutdoors
      @timeintheoutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIYSportsman I have had the same issue with the One R on loop mode but not recently. Have been looking into the Go 2 for walking up to a deer and other shots like that. I have the GPS remote and thought that would work semi close to the instant record, but it make a beep every time you turn it on and you can’t shut it off. Is the X2 silent and how is battery life in cold weather?

      There were some scrapes I'd tried putting some synthetic forehead gland on the licking branch though not on any of the ones in this video. They were all natural. So far I haven't seen much of a difference in scent vs no scent. It might make a bigger difference when making a mock scrape vs hunting over ones you find already there.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a mixture of mostly Thlete and Scentlok (their Terra Gila pattern) though I think having the right setup and good front/back cover and knowing when to move is more important than the pattern itself. Generally I break it up into high contrast patterns which work great in a tree or with snow. Or low contrast patterns where you have just brush or ground behind you. For scent, I wore rubber or eva boots, usually accessed with scentlok pants and gloves. Avoided touching anything if at all possible (sometimes nothing you can do) and then would still set up with the wind and thermals in my favor. But I'd also be wearing a drop down scentlok facemask, and either scentlok, Thlete, or Sitka outer layers with a windproof laminate. I'd still have deer react if they got downwind on the ground. But sometimes it would be a "mild" reaction considering how close they were. If deer were 30 yards and I was up in a tree, on occasion I'd see them stop and sniff for a bit, then go back to what they were doing.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We shoot does also, two so far this year and will probably take a couple more. And some of those deer I would have definitely been happy with on shorter out of state trips. But this place I have invested a lot of time into and don't mind holding out.

  • @outdoorsmanofmichigan3858

    I see you have all scent lok you think it makes a difference?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may help. It's tough to say. I definitely had instances where deer smelled me on the ground at close range. I also had other scenarios where I was up in a tree and deer 30 yards down wind stopped and picked their nose up for a bit, then eventually went back to what they were doing. Every scenario is different, so without a control it's tough to say how they'd have reacted with normal clothes. I've definitely also had instances over the years where deer appeared to be in my line of scent in normal clothes but didn't really react.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a cheap folding tripod stool from BassPro/Cabelas that I've used. Pretty comfy and easy to pack. However you can't adjust the legs for uneven ground. I have an old Travel Chair brand one that's similar but has a backrest and adjustable legs. That ones nice though more awkward to pack. Those types of chairs work well if you have good ground cover like ferns, logs, grass, etc. But you're too high up for bare ground. If hunting on bare ground I like to sit flat on the ground or a small pad like turkey hunting.

      I'll try to do a better job to outline the general area and timing for context. I've had it backfire in the past where even by mentioning the state I get countless messages of people trying to drill down and figure out exactly where I was at, or say that I'm in their spot, saying I shot "their" deer, amongst other wild claims that I've sort of shied away from getting too detailed on location. This hunt was in northern WI.

      Yea it's a good option to try. Different people will have different preferences once they try and compare with pins. For hunting, I haven't had any issues and have made nothing but great shots on deer. All have been under 30 yards though. At the longer ranges, I still prefer to range and use the tick marks. And from that perspective pins would be better and less clutter. Garmin I've been pretty fond of as well and have strictly been more precise with. But its also not legal in all the states I hunt and has the possibility of more issues and is heavy.

Taking all the legal game was a no-brainer with the rifle. Used iron sights because the shots were close and fast usually. 99% of my hunting is with a bow for many years now. Such a solid video! I'm sure there was a TON of work that went into picking those few prime locations. Any chance you're willing to say what date you had the buck parade on? Did you have a camera in that location and if so was that just the magic day or was it a consistent spot? The scrape and licking branch looked somewhat unassuming, and something most guys wouldn't take a second look at.

      Oct 31 was one of the better days I believe. Some of that footage was across multiple sits in the same tree. I had a camera in thar area and it's good sort of throughout that time period but sporadic in terms of individual bucks. I find a lot of those scrape areas just by finding a licking branch in a good area even if the ground isn't pawed up and they can be really good.

      I have used a number of things. I have used the limb legs from mathews. I've used a normal hys strap or bow hook if I've got a tree or sapling in front of me. If on a stool, I often will just lay the bow on my lap. Ideally, it can be positioned in front of your face to where you can raise your hand up, and draw back with as minimal movement or your body and the bow as possible, so holding the bow vertical does tend to make more sense.

    Thanks for sharing. Are you still using the Ezy V sight. If so how is it in low light situations? Thanks again

    Thorallly enjoyed the video. When that young 8 point came trotting in under you did he grunt at all? I thought I heard him grunt. Love the footage of the young 8 making a scrape then not long after that spike buck working the same scrape. Good stuff!

    Deer Hunting Reality Show
    This is one of the best deer hunting videos I've seen. The presentation from you speaking through the video quality is what, I believe, the majority of deer hunter's experience from the East Coast to the Mississippi River. Watching your video took me back to last week in my woods.
    Thank You

    Great footage! Real deal. I hate it for you on your big buck, but I've been there too. It is so hard to get an opportunity on pressured ground, sometimes even harder to get a clean shot. But, that is the blessing/curse of archery hunting mature deer. Keep up the good work. I have used several of your how to videos on setting up my gear - super helpful. Thanks for all you do!

    One of the reasons I enjoy your hunts is the reverence you pay to the flintlock and the deer. I'm tired of watching people with precision scope harvest an animal and proceed to loud "high fives" and "that's what I'm talking about". Merry Christmas!

    I've been hunting from the ground for 24 years since I fell breaking my back. I've had a big nine point about 5 feet from me while I hid behind a cedar tree. He actually seen my boots under the tree. Had no chance to draw my bow.
