  • GERMANY: Crime rates on the rise! Why too few people are being deported to Morocco and Tunisia
Germany is tightening border controls to increase security in the country. During the European Football Championship, more than 9,000 illegal entries were detected and 275 people smugglers were arrested. But deportations are hardly possible once people are in the country. Particularly worrying is the sharp increase in serious crimes committed by North Africans from Morocco and Tunisia. One federal state has already reacted: in Bremen, police presence has increased, criminal hotspots are being monitored and a special commission has been set up.
The balance shows that many criminals come from Morocco and Algeria, mostly young men. Across Germany, crimes committed by North Africans have risen sharply, by 110% among Tunisians and by 67% among Moroccans. Both petty crime and organized crime are on the rise. The criminal police are particularly concerned about the Mocro Mafia, a Moroccan mafia that is active in the illegal drug trade and has already committed several kidnappings and bomb attacks in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Despite this worrying development, the number of deportations is low. Last year, fewer than 300 Moroccans were deported, although four years ago more than twice as many were returned. This is also because Morocco and Tunisia are not considered safe countries of origin, which is blocked by the Greens. This argument is based on the problematic human rights situation in these countries. The FDP, parts of the SPD and the Union, on the other hand, are calling for these countries to be recognized as safe countries of origin, since the prospect of asylum for Moroccans and Tunisians is already slim.
Deportations often fail because the countries of origin do not take back their citizens or the identity of the people is not clear. Last year, 270 people were deported to Morocco and Tunisia, while 2,100 Tunisian and 3,400 Moroccan citizens are required to leave the country. The discrepancy between these figures shows the extent of the problem. Internationally, the crime imported from North Africa is seen as a serious problem, and the Japanese Foreign Ministry is already warning its citizens against traveling to Germany because of the Moroccan mafia.
