Sanikatta is a small village near Gokarna in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada (Karwar) District, Karnataka, India. The place is popular for being the oldest salt manufacturing village in Karnataka which started salt production since the year 1720. The water from the River Aghanashini which originates near Sirsi and flows through dense forest and mountains carries rich minerals, this river being unpolluted is made to flow through the reservoirs and then salt fields to filter out the water by evaporation and bring the water to high density and then finally extract the pure brown salt from that which is rich in minerals and hence good taste.
