My toilet downstairs broke. Landlady went nuts because I used a Clorox drop-in. She called a plumber who supposedly tried to change the parts. He said she needed a new toilet. I've used tablets for yrs. in my own house (built in 1948) that my son now owns and never had a problem. He still uses them. I checked the upstairs toilet. It looked like pond scum. I didn't dare use a drop-in. Kept flushing to no avail. Last resort was a small piece of Magic Eraser that I tied a string to with the piece of string hanging out. It took about a week since I don't go upstairs much but the pond scum is gone and the water is clear.

I have a mid century house with original toilets. They're stamped June 1955 on both the lid and tank. The tanks were filthy and look like they've never been cleaned. I used this method and it didn't work. Can't use bleach as there are some metal parts. Guess I'll just have to try something else.

Citric acid is not available in our city, what is the alternative item? Can we use household acid?

There is nothing called as household acid. What they sell is usually HCl or hydrochloric acid. Use diluted. Take precaution use rubber gloves & eye protection glasses, a face mask will also be important item. Will work bcos acids dissolves the encrusted salts which grow over a long period of time which is due to hard water (high TDS) prevalent in various parts of our country.

Good job, but the other question is how to keep it clean after that? Just to repeat the cleaning every week? We have a hard water and it stains everything very fast.
Try adding a cup of vinegar and let it sit for a while then flush several times. Haven't tried this myself, but heard that works.
