The biggest disappointment: THE OPENING TITLE CHANGE SHOULD'VE BEEN SHIGARAKI WALKING BY & DECAYING THE TITLE TO "MY VILLAIN ACADEMIA!!!" HORIKOSHI LITERALLY SET THIS UP IN THE MANGA FOR THE ANIME TO DO PERFECTLY, AND THEY MISSED IT!!! The Opening should've totally just leaned into the whole "Villains are now the main characters" aspect of this Arc, I was totally expecting some sort of harkening to how the regular Openings show All Might in the light with his back, and then it fades to Deku....They could've done that with All For One in the darkness, and then fade to Shigaraki!!! It would've been so cool!!! But NOPE....

Joint training arc was fine. It hit all the points that it needed to. But yea, second half was a mess. It was already weird to switch the Endeavor agency and Villain arcs to begin with, but the fact that they extended the agency arc to be longer than the manga was unnecessary, and really hurt the MVA a lot.

    • @ericlammers3492
      @ericlammers3492 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I didn’t like either of them. The joint training arc just felt long, pointless and time consuming from start to finish and the other 2 arcs I’m like I’m glad I got to see the villain’s origin story but dude like at this point the series has gotta do better not worse.

So anime watcher here (although I’ve been thinking about getting more into the manga) and I just wanted to thank you for this video, because it explained why season 5 felt so weird. Like I had heard about the MVA arc and I’d heard it was awesome, and then they got there and like… I didn’t get the hype. Which made me sad because one of MHA’s strengths is how they handle the foil relationship between the heroes and the villains.
But now I get why I didn’t get the hype, the hype wasn’t there. They cut off the things that people loved about the arc. And yeah that really sucks. The one thing that was still cool I thought was shigaraki’s development, which you brought up. But even that was flattened a little bit by the complete lack of… like, anything for ReDestro. Like for the whole arc my reaction was just “oh, there’s some… guy” and then he and shigaraki start fighting and it’s just “oh I guess he’s big now”
Like all the same weight and emphasis was put on the confrontation, but they hadn’t done the legwork to justify that weight and focus, so it just felt confusing. I genuinely though I must have missed an episode where they tell me who this guy is but clearly no, they decided that it just wasn’t important enough and uh… I think they decided wrong.
But yeah, from an anime watchers perspective, this season was confusing and felt like a lot of wasted potential. Your video was super helpful in helping me understand why that was

i really agree with the 4th reason you presented
-opening didn't focus at all on the villains
    -terrible pacing and episodes countdown
    -deku narrating the previews
and also, in recent days i saw how desperated the MHA japanese anime twitter was spamming the final season episode PV because "we came back to the heroes!"
i'm really afraid of the future of the series. considering how possible is to us to have a "second MVA" considering how the League is rn in the manga and the necessity of Shigaraki's character to take his most important spet in order to be the true symbol of fear.

What I would have suggested, to address the Capitalism issue, is Joint Training and MVA simultaneously. Show part of the training, cut to part of the Deika battle, cut back to training. The two arcs do offer some parallels, so this could have addressed the issue, while giving the audience suspense.
If done right, it would have had Shigaraki's mental breakthrough happening at the same moment Black Whip manifested. Just imagine that parallel for a moment.

That might've been cool, but I still think the tones between both arcs would've created some real tonal dissonance if spliced together. I'm just imagining going from Shigaraki's intense backstory to Mineta being a perv and jumping all over the place.

      Thinking on it more:
When it comes to MVA, I felt when I read the arc concluded in the manga that it was a missed opportunity. Imagine for a moment that the LoV lost. Suddenly the known villains were wiped off the table. Have some captured by the MLA (hopeful recruits), some escape, but effectively removed from the table.
Now we, the audience, would know of a bunch of villains, ones so powerful they eliminated the LoV, and *the heroes wouldn't have a clue*. Now a villain group with powerful connections. Politicians, media, technology, the MLA as introduced were an enemy unlike anything seen before, one the UA kids were ill equipped to handle.
Imagine for a moment, the media class, but instead of Mt. Lady being the guest teacher, it's Chitose Kizuki, MLA's general Curious, also the CEO of a major media company. Now we have an outright villain there, in UA, being friendly and teaching the students. The audience knows she's a villain, but the heroes are in the dark.
So, I see a lost opportunity from the get go, and the anime reflects that loss.

I think it is also reason 4, because IIRC One Piece stopped adapting cover stories because less people watch One Piece if there’s no Luffy and Joint Training getting Twice the episodes as MVA. An actual creative decision would have been during Endeavor agency instead of Endeavor sitting on a chair for half an episode he could have been investigating Redestro’s secretary disappearance, why the support items of the cider house gang exploded, the creature rejection clan being wiped and Redestro’s group. That could even lead in to MVA. Also would be cool to see Endeavor more as a detective.
Also hope the fandom isn’t getting you too much down.

In the Wano arc of One Piece as well, the longest flashback in the series which featured no Luffy at all, was adapted quite fast instead of adapting half a chapter per episode like they usually do. Probably to get back to Luffy, like MHA wants to get back to the heroes. But unlike what MHA did with MVA, the flashback was adapted amazingly and at no point were cuts made, it was just a bit faster (something most fans want anyway since the anime is usually slow). OP is also blatant in its marketing but it doesn't just want to get over with the stuff that doesn't sell as much, like Bones is doing.

    • @roman108
      @roman108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@chrismic8087 yeah OP anime usually has slow pacing but during the Oden flashback it noticeably became faster, although no major cuts were made and the adaptation of it was great.

@@chrismic8087 I do follow the One Piece manga but interesting they did that (I imagine they didn't skimp on the Law Flashback though since he's a fan favorite) and it was something I was also feeling while reading it that I wanted to get back to Luffy. I do hope it's a season 5 problem only since we do get back to the heroes POV though the anime's schedule melting doesn't seem encouraging since like mentioned it's pretty much always being worked on.
I won't even begrudge the Beach episode but no reason for the Endeavor sitting on a chair for 10 minutes episode.

Great video dude! Honestly I still remember my thoughts on the arc rearrangement as it was airing. As bad as it was, I *guess* you could suggest the idea that only Twice/Shigaraki survived MVA and the rest of the league were clones, but even then that is me grasping at straws.

As an anime only until I watched season five I can confirm that I would have rather had the mangas order of events because from my perspective, thinking that this was the intended order when watching, I couldn’t get why MVA was considered the best arc because by the time it started I already knew shigaraki got a massive buff that let him destroy an entire city had an army of 100,000, and that all the members of the league made it out fine, and because of this I didn’t get to feel the suspense of thinking toga might die cause she was seen alive, when they were going to break twice’s arm I already knew he was the original because he was still alive this is why it makes me mad when people say the rearranging of the arc is no big deal because it meant I didn’t enjoy the best arc as much as I could’ve

Recently rewatching the season cemented to me that this was my least favorite season of MHA. It's sad too because I was a big defender of the first half, I would say it's fine to drag it out because MVA was gonna be worth it and that the fights being two episodes will just make Bakugo's match even more dominating so it's fine. This was all under the impression that the second half was gonna be mostly MVA. Then the switch happened and I lost almost all hope. The remaining hope I had was dashed with that filler episode and the Kurogiri episode. After that I knew MVA was gonna be bad and man was I so dissapointed. The cut material really made the arc feel like it was rushed and just to kinda explain what happened in the Endeavor arc instead of an actual arc that changes the entire future.
Then after I did this rewatch everything in the arc made me mad. Realizing how the entire arc turned out, Joint Training being 2x longer than MVA is ludicrous and really brings the season down since it's basically the main arc of the season. Then the Endeavor Agency arc switch made me like that arc so much less (and I didn't even like it before). I know a lot of people who got out of the season because the agency arc coming right after the training arc bored them so much. I can't even blame them because two low stakes arcs together really drag the season down despite any "mystery" going on. MVA still hurts the most because of how much importance it has but the anime feels like a skeleton of it's manga counterpart. I used to really be a strong advocate for watching the anime but now I can't because I can't recommend season5 without saying they should read the manga version as well.

Personally speaking, I like the MVA arc capping off Season 5 more. This arc was essentially meant to be the best and end the season on a proper high note. I also felt it was effective in giving the audience a sense of uneasiness as we never really saw much of the League, or even what happened in Deika City until the very end. Then once it's over, we realize that while our heroes are slowly becoming more powerful; so are the villains too. What with Shigaraki now capable of destroying a whole city, commanding an entire army, and undergoing surgery to make himself even more powerful. The way I see it, this definitely gears people up for what's to come in Season 6. That being said however, I do feel the overall adaptation could've/should've been way better. As you mentioned the arc was 23 chapters long and adapted into just 6 episodes. That right there lets you know that the production team made a lot of cuts this time around. All in all, I can't help but blame Covid for the troubled production this season. If the pandemic never happened then Season 5 would've turned out much better, just like Attack on Titan Season 4.

As a manga reader that reads it through bought Viz volumes, I was saving this video for after I read volume 26, and boy, am I baffled at the changes in the anime.
The whole Endeavor Agency arc is there to put bubbling tension on both the villain front and Todoroki family front. How are we supposed to feel tension when we see the League in a dark room surrounded by unknown figures at the end of the arc?
Yeah, Hawks delivering a code message to Endeavor through the Meta War book is supposed to make the anime viewer go "Oh, what's this Meta movement?", but we already had that seed planted in the Endeavor vs High End arc in Season 4. The point of the message scene is not to introduce the bomb under the table, it's to see the fuse being lit. In the manga, Hawks connection to the Paranormal League flows naturally because it's Hawks > Dabi > Shigaraki/Doctor > Paranormal. In the anime it's suddenly Hawks > Paranormal.
It looks jumbled up, although I don't watch the anime, so I can't be sure the pacing feels good.

And by the looks of it they put their best animators on the movie, leaving the actual anime to what presumably was the b team
Even with the rearranging i think they could have done mva justice, had they not have that movie to work on
And now without a movie coming out we see s6 doing great

I already dropped the anime before it got to the EA arc.
Because I've read what would happen after, and I've found the MVA arc really hard to read. It was just lots of explosions and special effects that I couldn't understand, how many were in one picture, when there were two or more in one pic, where each was in it, the scale of it if we were up close and personal or keeping some distance from it. All that for an outcome that was predictable because of Chekov's gun and logic. And so I found MVA to be too fucking long in the manga.
I still read the manga though but honestly, it only worsened since then and I'm just there to see it to the end.
And then, when the 2nd s5 half was coming I decided to not torture myself with something that long again.
And here I am, 1 year later, only learning that they even messed up the order and got only bad consequences in terms of quality.
I truly made the right decision then. Maybe I'll go back to watching the anime, but I guess it will only be near the end, as I have problems with the first war, the Vigilante Midoriya arc and the second, ongoing war.
Maybe I'll watch a bit of the VM arc, and a bit of the second war, but for now, I'm going through the situation with the manga and fanfics only.

Option 5, which is the most viable to me and possibly other people, is that whoever directs the anime just hates the villains. In fact, while a good amount of people complained about MVA in every country, even Japan, the general thing in Eastern countries seems to be that you follow the rules no matter what, and you don’t like people who are different in any way. This seems to have translated into the Japanese MHA fandom as well, because most of the Japanese fans LOVED the season BECAUSE of the switch and the metaphorical crippling of the League’s character development. I mean, it’s ranked the number 1 season at least in Japan, from what I have seen. Besides, the ONE moment in MVA that isn’t a still frame besides the entire Shiggy Vs. ReDestro fight is when Toga is transformed into Uraraka, and even THAT was toned down from what it could have been. An official Season 5 BNHA animator put their animation that they made for the Toga-Uraraka transformation scene that she nearly finished, and told people that she was told to scrap it, and they didn’t give her a proper reason why other than ‘Time Constraints’, which you already explained why that excuse doesn’t work. Looking at all of the evidence, this is the only thing that I will believe, especially because they don’t care about the season making money when they have the ‘Movie Money Grub deus ex machina’ to save their asses.

This, I think, is the biggest fundamental problem with MHA: the East's extreme pro-authority culture has ingrained itself into MHA so deeply that it warps both the story and the concept of Western superheroes.
TL;DR: Getting Eastern storytellers to try and make a Western superhero story was a *BIG* mistake and the series will age poorly because of it.

    • @flyingstapler1241
      @flyingstapler1241 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@1992holycrap It's a story about the lives of Japanese superheroes inside Japan, not about Western superheroes. Just because the creator partially draws inspiration from Western superhero stories doesn't mean that MHA is one. Avatar the Last Airbender is also heavily inspired by Asian culture but it's still extremely American at its core, which looks odd to Eastern audiences.
You can criticize the storytelling, but storytellers taking inspiration from other cultures and making it into a new story set in their own culture isn't a mistake. It is just what's common and happens everywhere.

Unfortunately, if I have my facts right, the recap episode we get every season is mandatory for the contract that they have with the TV company or station or whatever that airs MHA in Japan. MHA is aired on a channel and time meant for kids so they probably want to make sure the kids watching are reminded of who everyone is and what they do at the start of each season and get some anime original content in for people to tune into and see something new. The part about it being on a kids channel also contributes to the censorship that happens a lot.

When there was the covid, the date was postponned, and I thought "it's ok, i'd rather they take their time and make something amazing for my favorite arc (MVA), I could even wait years". When the first part was released I thought it was good, but I wanted to see Shigaraki. Then I saw the reversed arcs. And the new opening. Oh god, the song is great but the animation ? The story board ? I mean come on hype us up a little, even if there are spoilers, it never stopped other shonens.
I decided to wait the end of the whole season before resuming where I left. I tried not to look at social medias to really have my opinion, to have a few good surprises (a new opening, please lord). I mentally prepared myself for the worst. In the end I was pretty happy (I really thought it would be terrible), and at the same time a little confused by the decision the higher up took. Another movie ? Fillers episode ? Flashbacks ? Deleted content ? This ugly ass opening (very personnal)
At this point I would like to know who exactly took those decisions, and why, because it makes me a little sad to be happy for something that is rather mediocre. At least the manga is still here, still very good, and I can't thank enough Horikoshi and his skills as a mangaka.
In the end I'm sorry if I ranted a little. I'm happy you made this video and I want everyone to stay positive, we don't know what will happen for the future, and we can remember what we liked in S5. (i really like the new ost for mha , and shigaraki's origin story was really well done imo)

My main point being the ABSOLUTE SAKUGA allotted to the Iida vs. mudman and that weird scene with Uraraka grabing the charm. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO GO OFF in those moments, like DAUM! While it was beautiful animation I other more worth while scenes (The cut Toga fight) and the final fight against Shigaraki vs. Redestro and the whole Tenko Shimura origin would have been better suited for some better animation right?! Those scenes could of had much more of an impact if the looked better instead of one-off moments that are forgettable. I honestly feel like the animation budget (in regard to what the Sakuga was used on) was scuffed this season aswell, and honestly leaves me hesitant to continue with the show when THEY KEEP BUTCHERING MY BOI!!!!

While I loved what was adapted, I’m still pretty devastated and disappointed over how much they butchered the MVA arc to fit the remaining episodes of the season. I haven’t read that part of the manga properly yet, but the list of differences from manga to episodes on the MHA wiki and in this video was pretty shocking to see. So much interesting looking stuff was cut.
The executives not liking the idea of the main characters not being in so many episodes in a row and the Agency arc lining up with the upcoming 3rd film are the possible reasons I believe in the most. I love the first 2 movies, but messing with the story flow just to advertise a movie that weren’t very plot impacting to begin with is pretty dumb.
I wouldn’t even mind the order mix-up if, there could have been a way to make it work. Like let the MVA arc continue on into the next season. As I think most of the final episodes of each season feel like blatantly simple bridges to the next season than proper season finales. But that’s just me.
Makes me wanna check out that arc in the manga sometime soon. I’m really curious on how much they butchered this arc for the anime.
    Nicely done video overall.

The one element i keep missing in every single analysis is simply COVID. We know Jump sent their artists home during the pandemic, leading to a radical shit in production. Why wouldn't it impact the anime? And specifically, the thing people come back to with work-from-home is that it's harder to communicate. A lot of the seasons' problems seem to come back to communication, like the setup for the sushi joke missing entirely. It's like writing and production for one episode didn't know what the other was supposed to cover. But other than that, #4 is definitely the main reason: the OP shows 1A in it's entirety and gives each a duo shot for several seconds despite barely being in the cour. The villains get primarily group shots despite being a much bigger part of the season. Even something as simple as Shigaraki decaying the MHA logo, practically tailor-made for the anime, is left out. The anime is clearly working with it's brand in mind, and does not like anything that strays from it.

As an anime only, and manga reader up until Redestro appearance, I liked Season 5 better than I did Season 4. But I can totally see where a manga reader is coming from with how the suspense was basically absent. Maybe the production company wasn't confident in the "up down" pacing that these 3 arcs provided so they swapped the arcs to ramp up the suspense linearly. Maybe I wasn't watching close enough but I didn't even know the MVA arc happened before the Endeavor Agency arc so I was under the impression that chronologically the villians got stronger AFTER the Heroes. My ignorance made the MVA arc better because I genuinely thought one of the LOV members wasn't going to make it out. Overall I think Bones played the hand they were dealt, and I would read the manga but if they're going to war I much much rather watch it animated. Especially since bones does a beautiful job with action scenes.

While this is a downside to the anime version, I was able to solve this problem by reading the stuff I missed in the manga, simple as that. It really helped me appreciate the anime version more. Most of the time we eather re-draw our own old art, sceenes from shows we like, or other artist art in so called "draw this in your style" challenges. Here is the thing about re-drawing: you do it in YOUR style. Most of the time you try staying as close to the original as possible, yes, but you still but your own flair, your own personal note into it. It becomes unmistakably a new piece. So technically, what MHA did with moving the arcs around, is exactly what people argue MHA didn't do. It was Re-Creating. Not Adapting. It was putting it's own spin on something.
Adapting is converting something to a new medium, while staying as close to the original as posible. For example by adapting an art style from traditional to digital, while making it look as identical to the original traditional style as possible. The goal of adaptating something is literally to get as close to the original as possible.
Re-creating something is changing little things here and there. Like the art style, or the order of story arcs. RE-creating. Making it a new thing.
People are right, adaptation is not recreating, just not in the way they think. At this point MHA the anime is not beeing an adaptation, it's closer to a recreation.
That beeing said, those two (adaptation and recreation) are soooo close together, that pinning them against each other is ultimately null and void. The through line is basically just that, only speaking for story structure, an adaptation tries it's best to leave the story arcs in the other the source material put them, and a recreation allows you to be a bit more creative and shovel them around.
For example, an adaptation of Alice in wonderland would never start with Alice landing in the queens garden, that would change her entire starting motivation, but a recreation could. (And a retelling could basically do whatever and make Alice a serial killer murdering everyone in wonderland xD)

I find it hilarious how we spend all this time focusing class 1-B and how great their powers are only for like half of them to be completely useless in the war arc.

Personally I feel reason 4 actually could tie into the movie theory, not because the movie would make sense but how it was the best arc to put the filler episode to advertise the movie. I say this because if they worried about the focus of the main three characters, they could've shoved MVA in the middle, make it short, and then use the rest of the season to focus on Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki.
    Really good video btw
