I love the headcanon that, rather than Boom being an alternate universe spin-off, it actually just takes place after all the canon games, at the end of the timeline. It's really cool to think that after years upon years of battling eggman since they were all teens, the gang grew up and just decided to live on an island (where Eggbreath proceeded to follow them anyway) and just kinda lived their lives (mostly) in peace.
Honestly, I don't think I could ever write a better fan fic of Sonamy if I tried. All the characters are portrayed faithfully, the dialogue is believable, the pacing is perfect, nothing is forced, it's funny, the romance is very natural...it's all just so good! I know the games will probably never let these characters mature to this level, being a franchise aimed at kids and all. But man, this fan fic proves that not only could a Sonamy ship be plausible in the Sonic canon; it's inevitable.
