  • HALIFAX, NS 1971 - 8mm Film. There's a nice shot of the Halifax Town Clock as well as "the new bridge" (only a year old at this point). Some downtown footage as well outside a Royal Bank. Lobster fishing and some coastal areas (Cabot Trail - thanks Patrick Campbell)as well as an old Mill to end it off.

    This is what Halifax looked like the year I was born. As a proud (former) Haligonian, I love to see this stuff. Thank you.

    I was 4 years old living a few km away in Lwr Sackville when this was filmed. I often thought wouldn’t it be cool if somehow you could jump into one of these videos and visit yourself back in the day.

    0:46 to 0:59 looks like the inside of the courtyard at the Halifax Citadel.

    WOW...The Halifax of my childhood. I was 10 years old in 1971 and we lived outside in Timberlea. My dad used to drive us into the city once a month and that was a huge deal for us to see the big buildings and shop.

      So glad you were able to connect with it! My intention was to hopefully find some people out there who could identify with the footage in a personal way! Appreciate the added context as well!

    Also, you said there was out of focus footage of a ship in a canal? There are active locks at the Canso Causway. Also there is a small canal in St. Peters, C.B. Both have swing bridges.

    0:21 - 0:30 St.Patrick's Church on Brunswick street with the Ocean Towers property under construction.

      Good cal on Ocean Towers (just looked them up) saw a shot that almost mimics the framing from the film only with the buildings complete. Thanks so much for that John.

      Until the supply runs out ;)....they have inspired me to create more narrative bits surrounding them though. Just bought a 70's Canon 814 super 8mm film camera as well cause I completely fell in love with the medium
      Definitely an inspired multi-level journey that's for sure!
      Glad you're enjoying them John.

    Haa...back when the cover charge for Citadel Hill was...zero!!!
    Why is it always sunny in 8mm?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It costs now? When did that happen? 8mm is a ray of sunshine 😆

      @@MarkHoltze Not sure when they started charging to get through the gate but it has been the norm for some years now. But as a child, I could roam freely into that fortress and stand upon that hill and just imagine a great 19th century battle ensuing with cannons blazing; defeating the enemy. We were all little boys at one time...and life seemed so free...just like Citadel Hill used to be.

    Wow! High quality man! What lens did you film this with?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Intro a Rokinon 50mm Prime and Canon 100mm for the close up. The actual film was with the Rokinon Cine. It's nice because it has a smooth T stop change and with these old films the exposure is all over the place, so I can sit and record on my C100MK2 and just ride the levels smoothly with the Iris.
      Really happy with the Rokinon lenses actually...Primes are my new favourite.

    • @jacob.lindgren
      @jacob.lindgren 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply! Yeah, heard that the Rokinon lenses are great. Been looking at the Canon 100mm though, need a macro.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty amazing...the canon L series macro might be worth the additional dollars (image stabilizer). I have the standard one (forget the abbreviation) I don't use it all too often, but when you do some photography with it, it's pretty amazing the little worlds it reveals. Really hard shooting moving wildlife though ... things won't sit still ;)

    • @jacob.lindgren
      @jacob.lindgren 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha you are probably right! What would you consider your best lens?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a tough one, depends what I want to shoot really. Lately i've been experimenting with my Grampa's vintage lenses on my Sony A7Sii...a couple of 50's a 24 a 200mm. They're primes but produce some really cool images and I love the manual control. Contax Zeiss, Canon from the 70's and early 80's.
      I'm not using my Canon 24-105mm as much as I thought though, but that's probably just the phase I'm in now.
      I'm in Canada (toronto) so the warmer weather and longer days are getting there so definitely need to get out and shoot some more. Just want to find the stories I want to tell, now that my great grandfather and grandfathers 8mm film reels are done.
      :)Your fav lens?

    well when i seen the title...i thought it was all halifax , only a few seconds at the begin...but seein other scenery around n.s. is ok too..no labels for the other locations but some we know..did the poster use Halifax to get the hits..why not label it correctly to get even more maybe..ie haliax and scenes around n.s. 1971...i wish other stuffed away film could be found and digitized..ie vhs tapes...if anyone needs that help,lmk..check my youtube ch

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the label on the film reel. No clue where the other parts are specifically so labelled what was on the actual film reel. :)
      I’m the poster by the way, Halifax was also the most iconic even if it’s short.

    Dude.. what's with the sappy music?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pacing, tone...the nostalgic ambience. Something that isn't too busy, not too offensive, something that might invoke an emotional response. A few reasons, but not all ;)

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I'm sourcing some new music options right now actually. TH-cam has some decent stuff, but it's a fine line of over the top and not quite enough and there is a lot of stuff that is nails on the chalkboard. I'm looking into audio networks and premium beats. You pay an annual fee and you can use their stuff no problem. Just want to find the right one so I have the widest possible net. Thanks for your feedback mate.

      Its better music than another promotional film from the same era upselling Dartmouth. They made it sound like Sacramento lol! 😊
