My best friend took his life. It was a long time ago but it's still with me today. He was a college professor and seemed to have it all together. I was devastated to say the least. He was a good man.
This is very interesting. I can understand why people would have these questions, especially if they've heard of this, or maybe had a family member or even a friend who might have died this way. That story about Evelyn McHale was a gem! I Googled it and wow - absolutely amazing! She truly had beauty in death, despite the horrible circumstance. Thanks so much for that tidbit of trivia!
Two of my Taphophile friends are licensed FDs and Embalmers, while two more are former FDs, but one was also an embalmer(he keeps his license current, though) whose specialty was restorative art. He showed us some pictures of his work he had stored on his phone(which is a no-no). Among the pictures were of a jumper, and a poor soul who was hit by a bus. He showed the before, and after effects of his work. Gruesome, for sure, but, they sent a long way towards explaining(in photos) what a skilled embalmer can do [for a decedent’s loved ones].
My brother jumped from his 7th floor apartment balcony and there were witnesses who said he never moved or made a sound going down. We did a direct cremation and are so glad we did. It's been 21 years and it still hurts
I have been watching your videos now for probably a good week. So informative. I like your empathy and your straightforward attitude. The funeral home in my area is family run for many decades. Of course I live in a community of 4,900. When you have a funeral there you are like family. Today marks the 18th anniversary of my mom's death. I'm so glad to hear you remark that children should not be kept from visitations or even the funeral. When I was 6 my grandpa was killed in a take down of a chimney it crumbled and broke thru the roof 2 story house to the basement. Needless to say it crushed him. This was in 1964 or 65. My sister and I and our cousins were not allowed to go. We had to sit in the lobby of the funeral home. I was very close to my grandpa. One day he was there one day he was gone. The day of the funeral I had to stay at my grandparents home with a neighbor. That bothered me for a very very long time. I realize it was a different time etc but children need to learn. They can't be sheltered from death. It's the circle of life. I have so much I could ask you but another day. Thanks Kari for taking care of people's loved ones.
Carrie, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Kari does an excellent job. My first occasion dealing with death I was in 5th grade. I wasn't allowed to go to the visitation but did attend the funeral of my grandpa. The one thing I remember while sitting in the family room was my mom whispering to me not to cry as it would upset my grandma. This was back in the 60's. I don't think death was really talked about back then so I totally understand your situation. I love Kari's videos as I've learned so much about the death process. She has such empathy. Please subscribe to her channel. She does live chats and 2 minute videos on array of subjects. Go to her channel, watch away and learn. 😊
Firefighter here. Regarding "animal activity" mentioned at 0:30. I can tell you that when you pass in a home w/dogs they will eat you when they're hungry. Saw it first hand. Woman passed and was in the home w/several small, yappy dogs and they did a number on the homeowner which I only looked in through the window to see from 3' away.

I suffer from depression & put myself into Psych Hospital for awhile. Whilst there,I met one of the few Golden Gate Jumper Survivors. If she wouldn’t have revealed this, you would have no clue……
My son committed suicide while in jail. He was autopsied because they suspected foul play. Til this day I don’t believe he killed himself. We had his casket open. He looked like himself with the exception of his lips being chapped badly. The medical examiner’s office held his body for almost 3-weeks before releasing him. I’m assuming that’s why his lips were so badly chapped. The funeral director asked us not to push against him. It’s was something I don’t wish on anybody. He was only 27. May he RIP.
Rocking the specs! 😎 It is amazing how someone can be put back together for a viewing. What is the most difficult trauma victim you have ever embalmed?
I had a friend who committed suicide when I was younger. He couldn’t be viewed because of how he chose to end his life. He hung himself with one of his dad’s leather belts. He wasn’t found for several hours. Just long enough that you could see all of the broken blood vessels and vertebrae in his neck. One was broken and separated to the point that you could actually see it partially protruding through the skin. At least that’s what the coroners report said. His parents chose to have him cremated so that his friends and the rest of the family wouldn’t have to suffer through the trauma of seeing him like that. They wanted to make sure that we remembered Rodney as he was and not something to be scared of. Of course we were all in pretty bad shape emotionally. But they didn’t want us to be mentally scarred. I have to admit though that even though stuff like that in movies doesn’t bother me much, I think seeing it that up close and personal would have.
Very informative Kari. I often wondered the same thing. Amazing they you folks are able to do such great restorative work. Love how you interject such a kind and empathetic tone. I am your greatest fan🍁
Objects fall at 30 feet per second, including us. It’s not the fall that kills you,it’s the sudden stop. I wouldn’t think you’d be able to embalm,If you’ve got tons of fractures and internal injuries...I’m picturing a floppy body from all those injuries. The photo you’re referring to,Evelyn’s photo, after she jumped off the Empire State Building in the 40s. She landed on a big limo. She left a sad note as well. She’d suffered from depression for a long time. She was engaged to be married. She’d said in her suicide note that she wasn’t worthy, and wouldn’t make a good wife,or mom,and her fiancé should find someone else. Google the story. A photography student who took the famous photo just happened to be in the area looking for news stories. He heard the commotion, and he was the first photographer on scene. He climbed up on the limo and shot a few photos before the cops got there. It took the ME workers a long time to get her off the limo. They thought her body was going to break up while they were trying to get her into a body bag. She was pretty much just jelly. Really sad story....
Almost all those I've embalmed who've fallen or jumped were autopsied. It is extremely difficult to embalm un-autopsied cases with multiple traumatic injuries. The worst being those killed in auto vs. train accidents which are totally different case scenarios.
I was listening to you explain the different type of work that you may need to do on a person. I have a question. Do embalmers keep records on what was done on a person, what equipment and supplies used, the amount of time it took? Just curious.
I wonder if this question might have came up thinking about 9/11. A lot of those that either fell or had to jump due to the fire in the towers depending on where they landed would depend on how much of the body stayed together. The one famous pic of the male that jumped and a statue was made of it .... well when he landed he was mostly "all there" but then a few that were witnessed that fell or jumped .. when they landed the body basically " exploded" due to the height and the speed so when they were found after the towers fell some of them might not have been fully found due to the body breaking up and then the towers landing on them doing more damage.
I suppose it all depends on how they fall & how they land & where they land, would it matter on the size & make up of their body ... wouldn't it? I can’t imagine a skydiver who went in from 10,000 feet could be viewed. Especially after impacting the ground at 120 mph. Google Ivan McGuire. Back in 1987 or so, Mr. McGuire jumped out of a plane at around 10,000 feet and forgot his parachute and no, it wasn’t a suicide. He was a videographer who was filming a tandem jump and back in those days, skydive videographers had lots of equipment to strap on in addition to their parachute rig. Well he got it all strapped on but forgot his rig. The jump is on video on TH-cam from his helmet cam and when he reached for the deployment handle you can see his arms flailing around a bit when he suddenly realized that the deployment handle wasn’t there because he forgot his parachute. There is no sound with the public video but on the video with sound, supposedly you can hear him say “Oh God no! Oh my God no!” His body was found in the woods not far from the parachute center. I wonder what kind of a funeral, if any, that his family had for him.
Very helpful info about dislocation of the organs and so forth. It would seem the best way not to survive would be to throw oneself from a an ocean bluff onto the jagged rocks below rather than a flattish surface like the water below a bridge. This way the organs and bones are really torn apart in all different directions. And if the jumper times it well enough, the waves can wash the body out to sea. It wouldn’t leave much for the search and rescue or the mortician to do, but it would be a self-cleaning method so no one is much inconvenienced. And arguably could be nutritious to some the sea life. From a spiritual sense, the jumper may enjoy a sense of cleansing from the sins someone else stained them with.
I worked with someone who was the 2nd person only known to have survived a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge at that time. He was 16 years old at the time. He told me that he jumped because he was gay and he couldn't handle the consequences of what being gay meant at that time. This was in the early 70s. In the articles that I read later, it didn't say anything about him being gay. It only said that he was having problems in school. He suffered a broken collar bone and was able to swim to a boat that had come to help rescue him.
I experienced someone either being pushed or jumping from a five story apt no one came down from her apt so I talked to her after I called 911 the bones from her legs were protruding from her skin above her knees I never found out if she lived or passed that has bothered me for a long time
I had a guy jump of building and he landed on me as well and I fell forward to the sidewalks and his family is very good person to have the ability to be in the same country for me he was in pyshc ward with me in the er of the doctors said that I saved him from death is a true story of his life and his family is very important to me to heal 💔😢🙏💙and 🏥to me is the best thing to be able to get home and get the right people to work with us and we can see how it goes on a regular schedule and then she can be a great thing to be a part of the person who has jumped landed on me and my back.
option 4 , my adopted mother there was a very strained abusive relationship towards me when she was alive, It would be giving up my freedom to go there, However i was not at funeral either as there had been no contact for over 10 years
My dad committed suicide in a running car,in a garage, mother State police said it look like he tried to get out, I am 65 years after the suicide, yet not healed
I had a cousin that was working on the roof top of a skyscraper and accidentally fell. He looked pretty good as he laid in repose however his head began to ooze fluids by the second day and his pillow had to be replaced. The funeral director had advised my aunt, my cousins mother that it was best if they opted for a closed casket but my aunt insisted on having an open casket.
Think about the funeral industry, trying to prepare a disfigured body to mimic a healthy, peaceful, resting, living person. Think about the falsity of this process. I was once a coroner, and I view the expensive and futile practices of this funeral industry in a generally unfavorable light. Especially the toxic pollution of ground water from embalming fluid. One must realistically ask if the deceased should be publicly displayed and viewed.
What about a plane crash like USAIR flight 427 where 132 passengers are turned into 6000 pieces of unidentifiable remains? Is it just a mass burial no embalming?
When my brother committed suicide, the car he did it in caught fire from the grease on the garage floor. He was so burned he couldnt be shown. What kind of fluids did they put on him to prevent odor? They said he was in a plastic liner of some kind.
my loved one jumped about 90 feet off a bridge. at first they told us there was no way they could do a viewing. they said he was “mangled”… his lower half “wasn’t there”?? i wish i understood that more. however they did end up doing a viewing and didn’t do an autopsy. he looked great. they didn’t shower his lower half but we couldn’t really touch him cause of the prosthetics on his face. i could see a gash in his head but they did a good job covering it as best they could. i’m still so bothered as to how u guys handle situations like that. like what do u do when their lower half is basically gone? or i guess more so mangled? idk but it bothers me. i wanted to ask to see his lower half but didn’t. i’ll always wonder what they did to deal with that
What if there was a person found decapitated but they never found the rest of the body but the family still wants a viewing and not have the person cremated....how does that work or does the head have to be cremated no questions asked
@@KaritheMortician hey Kari, I remember reading about the value of human organs on the black market and that Funeral Directors or embalmers were the main source of these organs. Is this still a continuing issue in this occupation?
You mentioned, as an example, that if the vessels aren’t attached to the heart you won’t get distribution when you embalm someone.. if that’s the case how can you embalm anyone whose been autopsied?
Kari, besides the incision to hook up to arteries/veins for embalming, are you allowed to cut open stomach area in order to move things around as needed?
@@whiskerbiscuit6209 I understand what the trocar does & embalming does.. Just wanted to know about the incision part. I’ve actually watched the process a few times but that was 30+ years ago. Didn’t think to ask about incisions. My days in law enforcement allowed me in the “back room” at the mortuary on occasion. I knew the owners quite well to but they sold out and they’ve all passed.
I'm just curious why you made a point to stay away from the word suicide?Suicide is a medical word and has always been acceptable but now like a lot of other things has become taboo. It's not a big deal it's just language has become so sanitized.
There's been a trend towards decriminalizing the language surrounding suicide; instead of "commit" suicide you'll see "died by suicide" in news articles etc. I think it shows that our society is becoming better educated on mental health issues to use more compassionate language for the sake of the deceased and those who mourn their loss.
When you have a family member who has died by suicide, it doesn't matter how the word is used or if the word 'suicide' is considered to be a medical word or not, it has negative connotations. My Father shot himself in the mouth. He was terminally ill with COPD. He was 6'2" and weighed only 68 lbs the last time he was weighed. He was under hospice care but because of the way he passed, he had to have an autopsy. He had gone to the hospital the night before because he couldn't breathe even with his oxygen machine. He was told that there was nothing they could do for him and he was sent home. He was totally bedridden so someone had to have given him the gun. I found out later that it was his wife and stepson that had given it to him. It was very upsetting to me because he must have been in a very dark place and in a lot of pain to do it. He had an open casket. He had just gotten a very short haircut because the weather was so hot. The autopsy scar showed clearly on his head. He passed away 3 days before 9/11.
I think it was the observation deck, of the ESB. Did u notice her ankles were crossed? Odd tho, she looked asleep, not deceased. She looked really peaceful.
Wow your videos are very educational. So did embalming stop when the pandemic first hit since most funerals stopped? Also how long did u go to school to learn so much?
Hi Kari, Wow I can tell you Personally I have seen the end result of a Jumper 56 stories or 717 feet Lucky it Only a few times in 20 years 2 jumpers 1 person walking, and well got hit by the Jumper causing death. Anyway, I assume it's Only the head which can be reconstructed as to the rest of the skeletal structure I assume it's a hot mess with no structure. But I also Assume in the Absence of a Venous Highway or Major Damage you cant use formaldehyde to circulate through the Body is it then Injected via Syringe.
Wanted to ask how do yall embalm someone who is an organ donor like the heart been donated? If heart missing do yall have a technique on filling/flushing fluid thru then sew up the arteries or ? Just thought of that question while watching this vid lol love your breakdown of topics and explaining stuff.

Yes there have been some cases of this and I can’t imagine how destroyed those individuals would be
Very helpful info about dislocation of the organs and so forth.
Good Morning Mis Kari
Hello!
Just looked up the photograph. How sad.
Yes
I worked with someone who was the 2nd person only known to have survived a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge at that time. He was 16 years old at the time. He told me that he jumped because he was gay and he couldn't handle the consequences of what being gay meant at that time. This was in the early 70s. In the articles that I read later, it didn't say anything about him being gay. It only said that he was having problems in school. He suffered a broken collar bone and was able to swim to a boat that had come to help rescue him.
Oh wow
My dad died falling 30 feet to his death. He had an open casket but his neck was very swollen and didn’t look right and that upset my mom.
Very informative.
Thank you!!
Wow
Thank you hun you are giving me answer's I have been trying to get for 20 yrs much love Arlene from Scotland xoxoxo
You are welcome
Hi Kari,
Did you have to help with anyone from 9/11? You do a great job of talking about sensitive topics.
I did not but would have gladly done so
option 4 , my adopted mother there was a very strained abusive relationship towards me when she was alive, It would be giving up my freedom to go there, However i was not at funeral either as there had been no contact for over 10 years
What's the best way to find and secure an internship?
Apply at the dozens of places hiring :) Seems simple but may require a move
@@KaritheMortician well alright lol. Thank you
My dad committed suicide in a running car,in a garage, mother State police said it look like he tried to get out, I am 65 years after the suicide, yet not healed
Im sorry 💔
I think suicide leaves so many questions
@@KaritheMortician and never answered
I had a cousin that was working on the roof top of a skyscraper and accidentally fell. He looked pretty good as he laid in repose however his head began to ooze fluids by the second day and his pillow had to be replaced. The funeral director had advised my aunt, my cousins mother that it was best if they opted for a closed casket but my aunt insisted on having an open casket.
Thank you for sharing
I'm wondering if I'm gonna survive falling in love with Kari the mortician...humm, looking gorgeous with those glasses Kari :)
Thanks
Think about the funeral industry, trying to prepare a disfigured body to mimic a healthy, peaceful, resting, living person. Think about the falsity of this process. I was once a coroner, and I view the expensive and futile practices of this funeral industry in a generally unfavorable light. Especially the toxic pollution of ground water from embalming fluid. One must realistically ask if the deceased should be publicly displayed and viewed.
Thanks
To each, his own.
I agree with you.
My friend and I are looking at New River Gorge. Far more effective than Golden Gate.
Dont do that
@@whiskerbiscuit6209 you're not the boss of me
Okay
@@cerberaodollam have fun then i guess?
What about a plane crash like USAIR flight 427 where 132 passengers are turned into 6000 pieces of unidentifiable remains? Is it just a mass burial no embalming?
They go through everything to return anything to the families
I had a friend who killed himself by hanging but they had a viewing for him.
Good evening
Hello!
When my brother committed suicide, the car he did it in caught fire from the grease on the garage floor. He was so burned he couldnt be shown. What kind of fluids did they put on him to prevent odor? They said he was in a plastic liner of some kind.
They may not have put anything on him.
Hey Motorcycle Boots!! ✌🏿
Hey Bryce!
my loved one jumped about 90 feet off a bridge. at first they told us there was no way they could do a viewing. they said he was “mangled”… his lower half “wasn’t there”?? i wish i understood that more. however they did end up doing a viewing and didn’t do an autopsy. he looked great. they didn’t shower his lower half but we couldn’t really touch him cause of the prosthetics on his face. i could see a gash in his head but they did a good job covering it as best they could. i’m still so bothered as to how u guys handle situations like that. like what do u do when their lower half is basically gone? or i guess more so mangled? idk but it bothers me. i wanted to ask to see his lower half but didn’t. i’ll always wonder what they did to deal with that
What if there was a person found decapitated but they never found the rest of the body but the family still wants a viewing and not have the person cremated....how does that work or does the head have to be cremated no questions asked
What do you do with replacement joints when their bodies are cremated? I know, I'm full of questions 😊
There is a video she did on this. Hope that helps.
@@lauragadille3384 Thank you! I truly appreciate it. I'm a little late to the game so I'm sure there's quite a bit that I've missed LOL
recycle them
@@KaritheMortician hey Kari, I remember reading about the value of human organs on the black market and that Funeral Directors or embalmers were the main source of these organs. Is this still a continuing issue in this occupation?
What about the 9-11 jumpers ?
The desperation is so sad
When you have extensive breaking of bones, how do you get the extremities looking normal?
put them back in the skin and suture and wrap
So, you have did some of.
:)
@@KaritheMortician Is it hard to make a new face.
Kari, does the crematory op have to removed the pacemaker? I know that cant go in the retort.
NO the prep staff will remove it.
@@KaritheMortician Good to know. Thanks Kari!
Can pacemakers removed from the deceased be refurbished and reused?
yes they are recycled
You mentioned, as an example, that if the vessels aren’t attached to the heart you won’t get distribution when you embalm someone.. if that’s the case how can you embalm anyone whose been autopsied?
I read the book his name is Kevin hines
Thank you
Kari, besides the incision to hook up to arteries/veins for embalming, are you allowed to cut open stomach area in order to move things around as needed?
The trocar goes in to drain and then fill the cavity
@@whiskerbiscuit6209 I understand what the trocar does & embalming does.. Just wanted to know about the incision part. I’ve actually watched the process a few times but that was 30+ years ago. Didn’t think to ask about incisions. My days in law enforcement allowed me in the “back room” at the mortuary on occasion. I knew the owners quite well to but they sold out and they’ve all passed.
There would be no need really
@@geedubb2005 yeah i thought about it later and i didn't really answer the actual question lol. but the trocar is still scary looking to me
If someone falls 80 stoteys theres nothin to embalm?
There might be
I fell for you
:)
I'm just curious why you made a point to stay away from the word suicide?Suicide is a medical word and has always been acceptable but now like a lot of other things has become taboo. It's not a big deal it's just language has become so sanitized.
TH-cam algorithm gets touchy when content creators use certain "naughty words" too much in videos.
I've heard the term "completed" suicide.
Because I am not specifically speaking of suicide I am talking about death by a fall and the majority are accidental
It is amazing how intact and at peace
Kari, if families find it difficult to pay the full cost of the funeral expenses in one installment , can they pay it monthly?
Most funeral homes require in full
Did you notice that her stockings are rolled down to her ankles in the picture? Was she cremated?
Interesting
Thanks
Thyroid is the motor of the body. Kari, great information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.
Thanks
Wow your videos are very educational. So did embalming stop when the pandemic first hit since most funerals stopped? Also how long did u go to school to learn so much?
Some places refused to embalm but many just did things as normal
I know this is a weird question, but do you talk to the people you’re embalming?
Yes I do
@@KaritheMortician I had a feeling that you did.
You just have to raise vessels in different areas to inject
