A post about the Insight into parts of the Culture that lead to boy group shipping/gay videos.
Just throwing out there, while these are fun to watch, remember that most of the "gay" moments you see in Korean Idols are simply a difference in culture and mainly a difference in the form Toxic Masculinity takes in Korea. Korean guys are generally pretty comfortable with their bodies around each other, going to nude saunas and public baths together, scrubbing each other down, using each other's laps as pillows, expressing emotions in front of their friends, cuddling, holding hands, and so on are all not seen as gay. There are positives and negatives to this. Positives is that yes, society shouldn't put expectations on how straight men should act, the negative is that the comfort stems from a history of "Korean men simply are not gay so there is no need to worry of being perceived as gay." Thankfully this mindset is long gone and thankfully it didn't bring in the idea that straight male behavior needs to change.
I grew up in the US as a Korean American and I currently live full time in Korea. I was surrounded by Koreans growing up so I knew of the familiarity between guys and all the physical contact while I was extremely uncomfortable with it due to initially growing up around mostly other ethnic groups that tend to shun male affection. Being closeted didn't help.
Now that I'm in Korea, it's refreshing to see a pair of male high school friends walking around linking arms or holding hands. I've seen groups of 16 year old guys doing this in an unironic way. Just showing their love and affection to their friends. Similarly to how women are able to in the other cultures men aren't allowed to. While I've been fully out for a long ass time, itnis definitely comfortable to be able to walk around hugging someone I'm dating of the same sex or doing cutesy things to them without people staring and immediately thinking GAY!
BUT as with all gays who are not fully out of the closet or out at all, no matter where in the world you are, they are still on heightened awareness that some innocent thing they do will be the thing that gets them outed and they are uncomfortable being as carefree as actual straight guys.
These videos are all good fun but I've seen some people end up giving off a vibe of watching through the lightly tinted lens of expected toxic masculinity + the lack of racial/cultural understanding, which is a product of their upbringing and society around them, especially if they are part of the gay world and it can get a little Asian stereotype fetishy hopefulness (?) If that even makes sense. So just wanted to throw that out there for something to watch out for.
I love your videos and have watched so many of them. I subscribed in another video the moment I saw you sound out a members name by looking at the Korean alphabet and reading that for an accurate name vs their English spelling. So I just wanted to say thank you for that. The Korean alphabet and sounds are so easy to learn, as they say it takes a smart person 12 hours to memorize and a not so smart person a week at the most (vocab and grammar is another thing entirely). I feel like it's such a small thing to just learn the alphabet and that shows tremendous respect for the culture you are consuming and in some peoples' case, exploiting to make money, that it immediately endeared me to you. Then I saw the rainbow flag and was like THAT'S MY PERSON!!! ❤ Much love from Seoul.
Also, small fact, did you know in a recent poll taken of students in Korea between the ages of 15-24, the percentage of males supporting same sex relationships and marriage is actually higher than 50%? Interestingly enough, the female results were the opposite with most being against same sex relationships and marriage. I have sapphic friends here and it is SO much harder than gays. So much more hiding of their faces and identity even within their own community. 😢

although we made this video with a lighthearted intent, that can still perpetuate harmful stereotypes or be insensitive as you pointed out. and I invite anyone to tell us if we cross a boundary now or in the future, as the last thing I want to do is make this space feel unsafe. Also I didn't mean for it to come across that you were crossing a line (well mpwith me, can't speak for other people) but I like these videos and I've seen some reactors that make it SUPER awkward for me because they make unnecessary comments saying untrue negative stereotypes like all Korean guys are gay because they are too beta and too small to go after women anyways and stupid stuff like that.

It will forever blow my mind that skz has ANY homophobic fans. Skz have literally been to multiple pride parades, Chan has openly said he fully supports the lgbtq and they do not act straight by any means xD I love them
supporting doesn't mean labeling them cause they show affection or have fun with eachother, a lot of friends are like that, they are very close and joke around, but lets not label men showing affection as automatically "gay", because thats why the western culture is not like that

also from one queer to another, i'm just gonna put this out here in the comments (for other stays) that i don't think it's bad to speculate about them bc heterosexuality is not the default!!! not to say we should stick labels on them but more so that there's no harm in acknowledging the possibility that they are queer, especially because they're in an industry where they'd never be able to say it directly ykwim?? i feel like lots of fans on many platforms attack people for saying it's possible, but i don't think there's anything wrong with that and i think many people demonize queerness .. straight up im just gonna put it out there and say i think at LEAST half of skz are queer 🤷♂LOL anyways, sorry to take up this space in the comments!! i really loved this video, i just feel like this is an important topic to me that i see many people misinterpret,,,,, also yes... .absolutely..... ot8 forever they're the sweetest

well you shouldn't speculate when it isn't your business, being straight isn't a default so we shouldn't label that either but we also dont know if they aren't straight so once again, we shouldn't worry about it, yes its possible but only saying it's possible cause they show affection isn't right, showing affection towards friends is something everybody should be able to do without be called gay or having a label put on them
also what if none of them are queer? i think it's weird to speculate just because you think without knowing, they could be or they couldn't be but also be open to the fact that none of them could be queer at all. im not even being mean, its jstt a fact, i dont mind it being possible cause maybe it is but lets not speculate over something we aren't sure of, lets support them and their bonds with eachother instead of making it about sexuality, and yeah your right about the labels, i think its fair to acknowledge the possibilty because of today's industry they could never say anything about it, but at the same time if they want us to know then they will speak on it, if they dont want us to look into it then they wont bring it up, and they haven't brought it up so it feel it's better to focus on their friendship and brotherhood because thats as much as we know at the moment, love stray kids and alllllllll their true fans, liked seeing some people's opinions on it though and i half agree but had some things i thought to say myself, hope you don't see this as rude or hostile, just wanted to share my pov

Difference between Koreans and Americans. Koreans rarely say I Love You. It feels cringe to the core unless saying it to a old grandparent or toddler. Parents and children will almost never say it to each other and friends won't either. Instead the words are replaced with food, acts of kindness, memory, and physical affection. We WILL say we like someone though.
The history of "Did you eat?" as a greeting/showing concern and love comes from most of Korea having long periods of being scarce on food up til fairly recently. So you were always concerned if the people you cared about the most were getting at least some food since no one was eating enough. The lack of food in Korea's history, especially under Japanese dictatorship, caused enough malnutrition that from 1910ish to 2010, the average height for Korean males jumped up almost 10 inches. The most an ethnic group has grown height-wise in the world. I think the average height for Korean females went up like 4-5 inches? Not too sure on that because the male stat was so startling.
The group it is most apparent in is the 2000's babies. Guys born after 2000 tend to be taller on average (and also have larger parts on average based on my non-scientific study while living in Korea with corroborations from friends who noticed once I alerted them).
