Nice video! I just retired from Amtrak as an engineer! 30yrs there and 10yrs in freight on the old Western Maryland at Port Covington! It’s changed so much in 40 yrs. but I can say “no complaints”! I’ll always love the Railroad! Now it’s my turn to sit in the coaches and enjoy the scenery from coast to coast!!

Plus, most of the tracks in America are owned by freight companies, which are world-standard in America, so enough if that "shitty rail system" shit. I do believe the passenger rail needs more effort put into its speed and ticket pricing, but I doubt the freight companies will waste money on something that won't benefit them (raising speed limits on certain tracks). Hopefully, if Biden wins presidency for 2020, he'll spend money to improve it, but for now, the American public doesn't seem interested into the passenger rail business. There is much less demand for it here, since gas is alot cheaper, not to mention that America is a big country, and airplane will be a more viable option to travel coast to coast for most people. In addition, America, currently, dumps its budget into military, I believe that we can spend a bit less on that to inrove the rail system, like in Europe, though there isn't a demand for it, it may cause more people to consider rail as an option for travelling.
Whoa, this was much nicer than I was expecting. My friend and I just booked a ticket from DC to Ft. Lauderdale on the Silver Meteor. He reminded me that there is actual train travel in this nation! I've been on overnight train trips in Europe, China and Japan--it's totally normal to go by train in those parts of the world. But one forgets that one can do that here in the US too! So glad my friend reminded me. I LOVE TRAIN TRAVEL. Am really looking forward to my first long-haul train trip in America! :D
I've travelled on Amtrak train (even former private RR Company before Amtrak merged) for 50 years. So, I go once (sometime twice) a year in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if on time or delays.

For most people that travel they need to take a look at the train offers rather than fly or drive a car. Lets look at the train ride itself . If you travel in a room you have you're own bathroom facilities . Sink with running hot and cold . You're own toilet with toiletries. Two comfortable chairs that converts into a bed when you're ready for night time . Great scenery . And the biggest peak of them of is the service with great food ! First class all the way !!! Train definitely beats car, but on long distances the train is incredibly slow compared to the airplane. I don't mind traveling in the train for a long time, but I don't always have the time for a train journey. On short distances, such as Washington to New York it makes sense though.
I just traveled from Tampa to Trenton last week on the Silver Star. Even without the dining car, it was a great experience for me. Thanks so much for the video! I liked your first caption “train arriving 30 minutes late”. The same thing happened in Tampa with my train. I knew about the engine switching in DC beforehand, but I didn’t realize that the top speed would only be 110mph thereafter. It makes sense to me now that, every time I tried to read or write something in my sleeper car (between WAS and TRE) that my car was constantly shaking!
I’m old enough to remember train travel in the 50s. Amtrak has the potential to regain some of the high ground of that era but high speed junctions and service to all towns greater than 50,000 is needed.
Unfortunately, that will never happen. The US already has a great rail network--for freight trains--but not for passenger trains. None of the freight railroads are interested in running passenger service again because there is no money in it. They would go bankrupt. Americans either drive a car or fly in planes when they want to travel.
We need to change our system of taxes where the federal government collects less taxes, the state more taxes as well as you county/city. This way infrastructure would be improved and each state would be free to use the tax revenue as they wish.
@@russbear31 Brightline seems to be a positive example though. I think over the course of the next 30 years train travel in the US will have a (moderate) comeback. In about 8 weeks the final decision on the Texas bullet train will be made.

Gone with the wind are the several mail cars on every passenger train sixty years ago. The very day the railroads lost their mail contracts, that was the very same day they shut down their passenger trains. Conrail (the northeast) had to go bankrupt before Congress created Amtrak. The Amtrak we have today is the compromise settled fifty years ago. A small nationwide network of long distance trains to gather the political support nationally to maintain the northeast regional services... Without the nationwide network there would be no northeast regional trains...
@@MarioStahl1983 I think the Brightline service has been grossly overhyped. There's several things about it that I feel are overlooked. 1. It's not "high speed" by any stretch. It's a diesel loco service run on existing lines shared with freight and other passenger services. Indeed, the diesel loco hauled setup and the speeds involved make it below the standard of most *regular* servies in western europe and east asia, let alone HSR. Between Miami and West Palm Beach, it's no quicker than driving. 2. The Corridor is super short. At 70 miles, it essentially a commuter service, not a HSR line which generally connects distant city pairs. The Brightline setup couldn't really be expanded to this as the journey times rapidly deteriorate and cost escaldate (slow journey times means a trainset does fewer runs to earn it's keep - this is a major incentive for new lines in Europe to be built or upgraded to HSR over conventional rail, even on relatively thin routes, such as the Galician line in Spain) 3. The Miami-West Palm Beach is a pretty niche route - though there are other similar routes where a similar service might make it, they're pretty limited. (the Pacific Surfliner is prob the best example)
I rode this train from Miami to Washington, DC in 2014 and remembered that they had to switch to electric power to continue up the Northeast Corridor. So it was very cool to see the whole process of coupling and decoupling the locomotives in your video. The thing I remember was simply the smell of diesel as we detrained at Union Station. yeah thats sometimes true, they usually arrive maybe 20, 30, 40 1 hr 2hrs 3hrs 4hrs or maye even 5hrs late because south of Washington, DC there's usually CSX trackwork being done or theirs freight train interference/delays or just any types of delays that usually happens down south, but other than that sometimes Amtrak long distances arrive early or very early

I've taken this train many times as a child from Hollywood fl to NY. Back in the day the staff would interact with the passengers playing games with prizes. The female staff members would let me hand out the prizes such as sun tan lotion etc... My family have always loved Amtrak and now I take my children and grandchildren as many times as we can. Good times. I'm talking over 50 years ago. Great memories.
They use electric loco's into NY Penn station due to tunnels and lack of ventilation..ie this portion of the NEC is electrified...Great shots of the new viewliner diner...
Great video! I am SO jealous! I wish I was there, I just went on the silver meteor last spring from Charleston SC to New York City in coach. It is agreat train and has all of the Amtrak amenities at your fingertips, I hope you had an awesome ride!
Took this train from West Palm to DC back in '03. Then hopped on the Vermonter the next morning to St Albans , where I took a thruway to Montreal. The train departs over an hour later now, so making the Vermonter the next day can't happen. Great memories.
NorthEast Rail Videos--In post WW II America, trains carrying passengers were still quite prevalent. When I was three years old, my parents picked up my grandparents at the train station in our small town. My parents cautioned med not to stray from their sides. When the locomotive engine dragged the passenger cars into the station, I held on to my father's hand as tightly as I could. The size, smell, and the vibrations on the platform are still vivid memories. Thirty years later, I rode the train from Quantico to Newport News, VA. They were still using diesels at the time. The ride was a lovely experience, but when the engine pulled up, all I could think of was that early childhood experience. The smell was different, but the sheer size, power, and vibration of the platform was just the same. This evoked all those memories again. So, thank you.

I used to go from Delray to tampa almost every 2 weeks, private room, 120 dollars round trip .... 60 dollars round trip riding regular seat ..cant beat it
Commuting by train to me seems more luxurious than driving oneself. You can read, sleep, play games, watch movies or exercise while enroute. Driving is more dangerous too. I think it would be great if you could attach a storage pod to the back of a passenger train to travel with all your things.
It's a lot nice and safer than flying. Too many problems with the airlines. The attitudes, the paranoia, the obnoxious passengers. The train is the way to get to Florida!

It looks like the Palmetto has a very similar route to the Silver Meteor, but is a day train without a sleeper car. (Both routes stop at Charleston, SC, the nearest station to where my sister lives; haven't yet checked to see which would have more convenient connections with trains from Chicago, though.) There are other Silver Service trains on Amtrak's PDF schedule, but it looks like either the Silver Meteor or the Palmetto would be the ones I'd want if I were visiting my sister.
Diesels are not allowed into the tunnels underneath Baltimore and that run underneath the Hudson River into underground NY Penn Station because the smoke is polluting.
Correct but if you have a P32AC-DM you can run them all the way to Penn Station 34th street because there's 750 v dc top contact third-rail in the North River tunnels North Bergen Side to Queens,NY from Orlando
I wish there had been some commentary on the quality of the food in that beautiful new dining room. I have never ridden the Silver Meteor, but having watched the Arrivals screen many times in New York's Penn Station while waiting for my train, I have seen multiple instances of the Silver Meteor running way behind its scheduled arrival time in New York. That happened so many times that I have thought the train might be more appropriately renamed the Silver Snail.
Bring back the Orange Blossom Special engine with new guts. It was a beautiful engine. Provide classy service onboard like meals reflective of the part of the country the train is in!

I’ve riddne the Meteor multiple times, I hope they still operate the heritage diners. It’s cool that you had Baton Rouge on the Meteor, and I was able to catch it just a few days ago!
Check out 9:49 to 10:00. The engine is moving backwards and forwards in inches! Never realised something that heavy and powerful could be so light to the touch. Very impressive!
In Germany (actually most of Europe) they still connect cars by hand (well, the high speed trains have automatic couplers, but the older ones dont) and there is a guy standing down there between the loco and the car to hook it up!

The old palm Beach train station a very special place for me when I lived in Boynton Beach watched many of trains from there even took a few from their too

I took that train (Miami to DC) and yes, it was night up through GA, SC, NC, VA and Maryland. It was very early in the morning when we arrived at DC, my final destination. I remember eating breakfast at Union Station at a little breakfast stand.
Had the train been pulled by a dual mode locomotive you can start up third rail at the NJ side of the North River tunnel therefore a single seat ride from Florida to 34th Street Penn Station Midtown Manhattan
Started 30 minutes late and arrived 30 minutes early. Long Distance trains that travel on the Northeast Corridor have all D stops (discharge only) from Washington to New York, so they can leave early. However, that might be a problem when the train gets to the tunnels into Penn since they are slot-restricted.
@Larry Butler The US subsidizes these countries by giving them free protection and not demanding that they spend 2% of their economy on defense. That's how they can afford to have great trains. In any case not all European trains are great, there are lots of crappy trains in France, Italy, Czech republic, and Sweden, and these are just the ones that I've ridden. Great Britain apparently also has trains even worse than Amtrak.
Larry Butler, move to those socialist countries so you can ride the TGV then! No one is stopping you! We have a huge interstate highway system and everyone has 2 or 3 vehicles in their driveway so it seems, most people are going to continue to drive themselves where they want to go instead of waste money on something like the TGV here.

Nice video Jacob. I'm not an FRA whiz but I don't think they care about locomotives north of DC. I do know that the NY/NJ MTA prohibit internal combustion engines in and out of the tunnels and in Penn Station. DC is the logical place for power change.
Interesting. I don't see any cooks in the kitchen. All I see are servers. Is anything prepared and cooked on board, or is it all pre-cooked and just heated? In fact, that one quick look at the kitchen didn't show very much that resembled anything you could cook on.
Cats01 They are only chefs cooking in the kitchen at designated dining hours. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner) Most of the food is cooked and prepared on the train when you order it. (Similar to a restaurant) The café car is for lower Quality food during for when the dining car is closed. The Café car has frozen food like pizza and prepackaged food like chips.
I built those dining cars... there are deep fryers, a flat top, two stoves, and broilers.... so it has everything you need to cook... all restaraunt quality hardware as well...
Liked your trip and if the train had a P32ACDM it would activate third rail at the North River tunnel portal at North Bergen,NJ due to Penn Station having overhead wires and third rail on Amtrak platforms
NorthEast Rail Videos familiar to that area because I've been through the tunnel itself with a NJ Transit Arrow III and you have to look down from the windows to see where the third rail is on the North River tunnels on its 34th street portal
All the LD trains that go south from New York start with an ACS-64 on point. They swap it out for one or two P42's in Washington. This is required since Penn is electric only, and they also get to take advantage of the benefits of electrification all the way down to Washington. The P32ACDM's only go on the Empire Corridor.
We live in the Midwest , the trains are in slums , the areas are frightening.. Warned don't leave your cars at the stations. Our train to Chicago was run down! Over all we were disappointed in Amtrak!! After seeing this .. I have hope that maybe they have improved! Thank you for sharing!
TrainSounds No clue, it has been a for a while and the interior is all stripped out. I am assuming it is used for training or maybe it got into an accident so Amtrak just put it there to make the station look a little more active. I was thinking the same thing during the trip.
The Viewliner Diner is used on many long-distance services from New York City, such as the Silver Meteor to Florida, Crescent to New Orleans and Lake Shore Limited to Chicago.

@@user-wb3wg3we8w I don't understand what you mean about the Superliner. Those are used on the west side of the U.S. because they are too tall to fit in the tunnels near Baltimore and New York. They were never used on the Silver Meteor. Yes it is sad that the Heritage fleet is retired in the U.S., but there are still lots of heritage Budd coaches (including dining cars) running in Canada on "The Canadian" service between Toronto and Vancouver.

The Viewliner Diner in this video is a single-level coach, so it is used only on trains consisting of single-level coaches such as Viewliner, Amfleet and Heritage coaches. Superliner trains are double-decker, so they use a different Superliner Diner coach. Superliner coaches cannot be directly connected to single-level coaches because the walkway between coaches is much higher off the ground. In order to couple a Superliner train to a normal coach (such as a Viewliner or Amfleet), there must be a special "Transition" coach with a Superliner connector on one end and a normal connector on the other end. Don't feel bad about your English. I have heard that in Japan the English classes teach mostly grammar, but in my opinion that is a very bad way to learn. English can be very complex, and often it does not follow its own rules. Most English speakers do not learn complex grammar or pronunciation rules anyway. The only realistic way to learn is to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing, just like you're doing. So I respect you for having the courage to do that.

AMERICA HAS GREATEST POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT COUNTRY FOR RAIL NETWORK. THE TRAINS ARE VERY CLASSY BUT NEED TO EXPAND THE SERVICE.

NorthEast Rail Videos--In post WW II America, trains carrying passengers were still quite prevalent. When I was three years old, my parents picked up my grandparents at the train station in our small town. My parents cautioned med not to stray from their sides. When the locomotive engine dragged the passenger cars into the station, I held on to my father's hand as tightly as I could. The size, smell, and the vibrations on the platform are still vivid memories. Thirty years later, I rode the train from Quantico to Newport News, VA. They were still using diesels at the time. The ride was a lovely experience, but when the engine pulled up, all I could think of was that early childhood experience. The smell was different, but the sheer size, power, and vibration of the platform was just the same. This evoked all those memories again. So, thank you.

I've been thinking about taking the Palmetto from Savannah to DC this spring, and maybe the Silver Meteor on the way back.

Commuting by train to me seems more luxurious than driving oneself. You can read, sleep, play games, watch movies or exercise while enroute. Driving is more dangerous too. I think it would be great if you could attach a storage pod to the back of a passenger train to travel with all your things.
Rode the same line when in the Navy and traveled from WPB to Jacksonville. Cost of one way ticket was a staggering 8 dollars in 1968!!

It's a lot nice and safer than flying. Too many problems with the airlines. The attitudes, the paranoia, the obnoxious passengers. The train is the way to get to Florida!
It's actually much more dangerous. Trains are around three times as risky as traveling by airplane.
Thomas trains are better for the environment though !
While Trains are much safer than cars, planes take the cake for being safer by a pretty wide margin

It looks like the Palmetto has a very similar route to the Silver Meteor, but is a day train without a sleeper car. (Both routes stop at Charleston, SC, the nearest station to where my sister lives; haven't yet checked to see which would have more convenient connections with trains from Chicago, though.) There are other Silver Service trains on Amtrak's PDF schedule, but it looks like either the Silver Meteor or the Palmetto would be the ones I'd want if I were visiting my sister.
Diesels are not allowed into the tunnels underneath Baltimore and that run underneath the Hudson River into underground NY Penn Station because the smoke is polluting.
That's whey they switched locos at DC.
Correct but if you have a P32AC-DM you can run them all the way to Penn Station 34th street because there's 750 v dc top contact third-rail in the North River tunnels North Bergen Side to Queens,NY from Orlando
Changing to electric locomotives can be traced to steam locomotive in the early 1900's due to long tunnels and pollution.

I wish there had been some commentary on the quality of the food in that beautiful new dining room. I have never ridden the Silver Meteor, but having watched the Arrivals screen many times in New York's Penn Station while waiting for my train, I have seen multiple instances of the Silver Meteor running way behind its scheduled arrival time in New York. That happened so many times that I have thought the train might be more appropriately renamed the Silver Snail.
Bring back the Orange Blossom Special engine with new guts. It was a beautiful engine. Provide classy service onboard like meals reflective of the part of the country the train is in!

Check out 9:49 to 10:00. The engine is moving backwards and forwards in inches! Never realised something that heavy and powerful could be so light to the touch. Very impressive!
In Germany (actually most of Europe) they still connect cars by hand (well, the high speed trains have automatic couplers, but the older ones dont) and there is a guy standing down there between the loco and the car to hook it up!

The old palm Beach train station a very special place for me when I lived in Boynton Beach watched many of trains from there even took a few from their too

Did this train stop in Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC, or any North Carolina towns? Also enjoyed the tour of your room, looked great and functional.

I took that train (Miami to DC) and yes, it was night up through GA, SC, NC, VA and Maryland. It was very early in the morning when we arrived at DC, my final destination. I remember eating breakfast at Union Station at a little breakfast stand.
Had the train been pulled by a dual mode locomotive you can start up third rail at the NJ side of the North River tunnel therefore a single seat ride from Florida to 34th Street Penn Station Midtown Manhattan
Started 30 minutes late and arrived 30 minutes early. Long Distance trains that travel on the Northeast Corridor have all D stops (discharge only) from Washington to New York, so they can leave early. However, that might be a problem when the train gets to the tunnels into Penn since they are slot-restricted.
A one hour make up on a ten hour stretch equals way too loose timetabling.
@Larry Butler The US subsidizes these countries by giving them free protection and not demanding that they spend 2% of their economy on defense. That's how they can afford to have great trains. In any case not all European trains are great, there are lots of crappy trains in France, Italy, Czech republic, and Sweden, and these are just the ones that I've ridden. Great Britain apparently also has trains even worse than Amtrak.
Larry Butler, move to those socialist countries so you can ride the TGV then! No one is stopping you! We have a huge interstate highway system and everyone has 2 or 3 vehicles in their driveway so it seems, most people are going to continue to drive themselves where they want to go instead of waste money on something like the TGV here.

Nice video Jacob. I'm not an FRA whiz but I don't think they care about locomotives north of DC. I do know that the NY/NJ MTA prohibit internal combustion engines in and out of the tunnels and in Penn Station. DC is the logical place for power change.
Interesting. I don't see any cooks in the kitchen. All I see are servers. Is anything prepared and cooked on board, or is it all pre-cooked and just heated? In fact, that one quick look at the kitchen didn't show very much that resembled anything you could cook on.
Cats01 They are only chefs cooking in the kitchen at designated dining hours. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner) Most of the food is cooked and prepared on the train when you order it. (Similar to a restaurant) The café car is for lower Quality food during for when the dining car is closed. The Café car has frozen food like pizza and prepackaged food like chips.

I built those dining cars... there are deep fryers, a flat top, two stoves, and broilers.... so it has everything you need to cook... all restaraunt quality hardware as well...

We took the train from Western Massachusetts to Orlando and had a ball! The food was excellent and the beds quite comfy! . Took about 24 hours

Because of how underfunded they are unfortunately. If they had more funding everything would be better in some way shape or form.

NorthEast Rail Videos familiar to that area because I've been through the tunnel itself with a NJ Transit Arrow III and you have to look down from the windows to see where the third rail is on the North River tunnels on its 34th street portal
All the LD trains that go south from New York start with an ACS-64 on point. They swap it out for one or two P42's in Washington. This is required since Penn is electric only, and they also get to take advantage of the benefits of electrification all the way down to Washington. The P32ACDM's only go on the Empire Corridor.

We live in the Midwest , the trains are in slums , the areas are frightening.. Warned don't leave your cars at the stations. Our train to Chicago was run down! Over all we were disappointed in Amtrak!! After seeing this .. I have hope that maybe they have improved! Thank you for sharing!

TrainSounds No clue, it has been a for a while and the interior is all stripped out. I am assuming it is used for training or maybe it got into an accident so Amtrak just put it there to make the station look a little more active. I was thinking the same thing during the trip.

@@user-wb3wg3we8w I don't understand what you mean about the Superliner. Those are used on the west side of the U.S. because they are too tall to fit in the tunnels near Baltimore and New York. They were never used on the Silver Meteor.
Yes it is sad that the Heritage fleet is retired in the U.S., but there are still lots of heritage Budd coaches (including dining cars) running in Canada on "The Canadian" service between Toronto and Vancouver.

The Viewliner Diner in this video is a single-level coach, so it is used only on trains consisting of single-level coaches such as Viewliner, Amfleet and Heritage coaches. Superliner trains are double-decker, so they use a different Superliner Diner coach. Superliner coaches cannot be directly connected to single-level coaches because the walkway between coaches is much higher off the ground. In order to couple a Superliner train to a normal coach (such as a Viewliner or Amfleet), there must be a special "Transition" coach with a Superliner connector on one end and a normal connector on the other end.
Don't feel bad about your English. I have heard that in Japan the English classes teach mostly grammar, but in my opinion that is a very bad way to learn. English can be very complex, and often it does not follow its own rules. Most English speakers do not learn complex grammar or pronunciation rules anyway. The only realistic way to learn is to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing, just like you're doing. So I respect you for having the courage to do that.
