  • Here's what I used to weld a clothes rack.
    The rutile electrodes amzn.to/44nmTDw
Telwin welding machine tested on my site bricolou.com/review/telwin-23...
    and the welding mask bricolou.com/review/wegoodler...
I'm writing here about my discoveries while practicing arc welding on an old clothes rack destined for the dump.
It's a low-end product made of extremely thin metal tubes.
Here's my video with my mistakes and discoveries. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed filming it.
To start, of course, I used 1.6 mm diameter electrodes, which is the smallest I have.
It's also the minimum setting on my Telwin welding machine. Unfortunately, if I reduce the power, the weld doesn't happen, and if I increase it, I get a huge hole with each touch.
And when I set it to the appropriate setting, it's indeed very easy to make holes.
I tried several methods, as you can see in the video, to manage it, and indeed, it's possible to weld very thin metal with an arc.
I could only test it on the four phases of my two feet.
The purpose of this training is, of course, to prepare for the day when we need to do something more serious.
The technique I found to work best is to sandwich a second electrode.
You already have to scrape off the protective part to recover the metal core.
Then, after that, strongly at the point of the excess, you can weld or patch a hole in a few seconds.
I also discovered that it's better to make a longitudinal trace on the parts to be welded rather than perpendicular as I usually do for larger metal parts.
Normally, I start by soldering one side and then move towards the other.
With super thin metal like the uprights of this clothes rack, you can't do this because it immediately pierces through.
In the end, I'm quite happy with the result since it can be used again when the laundry pile is too big on rainy days.
Beyond the ridiculous economic aspect of saving 10 euros, the possibility of recycling is more important.
🎁 I simply used amzn.to/3GKIr2C to film this video in 4K. It goes to show, you don't need much to have fun.
