England do not play in the Olympics, it would have been Team GB. They missed out by one goal on goal difference after UEFA changed the rules, stopping automatic qualification as World Cup runner up, allowing them to base qualifying on England.
The rankings are based on runs of wins and unbeaten runs with, I believe, bonus for wins outside the home country.

They 'missed out' more than that:
Team GB had a chance to qualify as
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and 'missed out' on ALL COUNTS.
      Meanwhile,
Spain just won the Nation's League and qualified in first place in their group for the Euros.
      But, hey,
you can run but you can't hide.
Spain will end up playing the USA and England (Team GB) eventually.

@@mlsarchitect My point was really that you could not use Team GB results for ranking as it is not England. It includes players from the other countries

Given the facts, and with all due respect,
      a point not worth making.

@@mlsarchitect It did make England immune to a drop in the rankings. Oh dear, Spain dropped. I seriously doubt that Team GB will exist as a prospect next time as it is possible there will be sixteen U23 teams next Olympics to make it the same as for men. The timing of the Olympics does not suit UEFA countries and they might prefer the main competitions to be World Cup, Euros and UCL. Perhaps this would be to Spain's advantage?

Spain qualified for the Olympics by winning the Nations' League, beating France in the final.
Germany qualified by coming third behind France (Olympic hosts).
England (and needless to say Scotland et al) didn't make the last 4 in that tournament.
The women are not U23 in the Olympics.

England’s points wouldn’t have been affected negatively or positively by the olympics anyway as they don’t compete, Great Britain does. Aka: even if they had in fact qualified and even won the thing it wouldn’t have upped their ranking.
What might effect their ranking was Englands lackluster qualification campaign in the Nations league but truthfully they didn’t do so poorly numbers wise (even if they were uninspiring to watch). it’s incredibly hard to qualify for one of the European slots as it’s so competitive and this is considered by the algorithm FIFA uses to determine these rankings. In the end they were clearly drained after their World Cup defeat and eventually missed out by one goal. This doesn’t change the fact they still hold the European cup and made the World Cup final last year. Even before that they’d regularly made the finals of tournaments over the past several years, and when they have played top teams like the US and Spain in recent years they have come out on top more often than not. I believe they were unbeaten in competitive fixtures for over 2 years before the World Cup final. Lost 1 friendly perhaps (?). Think it’s quite harsh to claim they don’t still deserve to be 2nd. Who else would you say? Spain are a great team and had an amazing 2023 but they can’t yet claim the same level of consistency as the English.
Would be surprised if England didn’t challenge for the Euros next year now their squad is fit again. We might have another Spain v England final on our hands. The rankings will have something to say then I’m sure.

Landon Donovan, give him a chance to coach the Waves! If he’s sucked after 2 -3 years then rethink about it!
He’s the legend of USMNT. He’s been there done that. Give him a break. He seems to know what’s he’s doing with the team so far. Let him show his talents, we maybe surprise soon enough.
Korbin Albert, bless her heart. She’s helped the USWNT in some critical moments in the Olympic. She’s still developing her talents. Wait and see folks, she maybe a diamond still in the rough!!!🌹⚽️
The USWNT is number one in the world now where they belong!!! Some out there may think that’s little too fast too high, it’s FIFA decision, wait and see at the end this year, especially the game with England in London on November, so hold your horses!
Sorry Sandra, the Red-star hasn’t done so well lately. Maybe they need more caliber players to work concert with Malory Swanson to be more on winning side.
    Go team USA!!! 🌹💖⚽️🇺🇸👍🤩

We all agree that number 5 should not move to number 1 because of one tournament. We also have to talk about France being number 4, England being number 2, etc before the Olympics.

"we all?" ... OK I agree too, but when #1 Spain had a very poor tournament, England didn't do anything, Germany got beat by us twice, France... its at least arguable that US moves to #1 . I do think that this tournament brought about some strange results due to the compressed schedule. I think we (US) should probably be ranked about #3 after that tournament. We'll see how Spain responds when they get rested and hungry again. They are my favorite team to watch when they are clicking. I was hoping for a Spain--US matchup the whole tournament, but it didn't happen... no fault of our girls. US has some young athletes right now, and they are catching up on the tactics and techniques by intermixing the top two leagues, and hiring good coaches. We'll be a force, whatever the naysayers say. Looking forward to some fun matchups.

i think the presenter needs to read how rankings are worked out. England are not a sovereign state so can not compete in the Olympics.

So, Jereko's middle name is Adam and M. Adam Jereko will be playing next to Temwa Chawinga. Is it that important to win?

Are you implying that the players' names should keep them off a team despite prodigious playing ability? I don't want to throw around allegations based on so little information, but I cannot make any sense of your comment otherwise. What do you care what their names are?

I guess when an American (Mallory Swanson) requires 4 knee surgeries over the course of a year, that's nothing. What adversity, am I right? Knees and surgery work differently in the States, everyone knows that.

One of these commentators is a man hater. Landon Donovan deserves a chance. What they have is old players that should be brought in off the bench. But Stoney couldn't do that. She was loyal to the old guard. Learn from Emma. Donovan is a winner. You wanna play for a winner. It's disrespectful to him for them to question him. What have they done? Wave was sucking it under Stoney. So why not try something different.

Donovan is just an interim coach. But the question is whether Donovan has enough coaching experience--there are plenty of former excellent players who are mediocre coaches (Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard)
