You know, normal cars(with a manual transmission) do have some straight gears: the reverse gear. Ever heard that weird noise when you're reversing? Thats the straight cut gears.
There is no actual reverse gear, except in manual transmissions. The reverse gear is just the planet gears of the planetary gearset of an automatic transmission, which use helical cut gears. Search up how a planetary gearset works on youtube before you start spurring out bullshit.
Bart failed to mention just how badass straight cut gears sound at speed. As a mechanical engineering student I love watching your videos, they are educational as well as entertaining, I think you found the right balance of being educational without getting too bogged down and bored by the theory and math behind the concepts
One of my teacher once told us that in the old days all gearbox were straight cut, even truck's one, he said the sound of it was louder than the engine once you past 50 mph
It's long gone sadly. Bart left Donut like 4 years ago :( They never made any public mention of it that I remember so I suspect it wasn't on the best of terms but I'm not sure
I was. But I've been trying to figure out what that gearbox whine was anyway. I always thought it was the drivetrain, when you get to higher speeds. I also hear it in some rally cars.
@@willmiskovich359 Its got to be cheaper to manufacture a straight cut gear than a helical. It makes reverse noisy, but how long are you in reverse to even recognize it?

Hey guys, thanks a whole lot for this series. Everyone loves to learn stuff and its better with the comedic relief and graphics. Would have been useful for me last year, when i had a test on this, but it is going to be easier for everyone else. Thanks to everyone at donut!
@[GD] hiyarus In the case of the BMW you kinda have to, since there were multiple M3 GTRs from different types. Using the full name means people know which one you're talking about right from the get-go.

Energy loss as well, some of that energy transfer is being sent to those thrust load bearings. Straight cut transfers the load straight into the other gear. Want a hint of additional power to the wheels? Stick with straight cut. But youll be dealing with a whine.
Thanks Bart for another awesome funny and informative video, on a lighter note I think the middle finger is the world's first and most common lever which people use on one another.
that is why herringbone gears are invented. to cancel out the axial load from helix angle. the left hand thrust and right hand thrust cancels out each other.
Well there’s only two types of people in the world, left handed and right handed! Kinda makes you wonder what all the fuss was about in the first place 🤔
funny bit, at some catholic schooles etc a while back, being left handed was considered sinful (hole devil left side nonsence?). SO even with lvr handedness we figured out how to hate eachother for that lol.
Ahh so this is why i subbed to donut 5 years ago. Today im on the toilet thinking, "hmm, i want to see a visualization of straight cut gears vs helical gears." First vid that comes up is this 1. Actual useful information vs today where every vid is a god dammned game show 😑

Why is that?
ITS THE SAME THING DUMBASS. Manual gears are not straight cut either so stfu and go read up on manual transmissions.
