  • Belonging to Christ
    Mr. Tan Chong Jin
    Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:1-16
BIG IDEA: God builds up all believers who belong to a single body of Christ.
    Key Verse: Ephesians 4:13 (NIV)
Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
    Introduction
Having covered the power of the Gospel in chapters 1-3, Paul now turns to the practical outworking of the faith in the Gospel.
Believers are now part of the single body of Christ (i.e. the church).
In the first part of chapter 4, Paul will outline how the unity of the church is maintained as believers mature in their knowledge of Christ and living fully for Christ (Ephesians 4:13).
How God builds us as the body of Christ:
    1. Identity in Christ
A shared identity forms the basis of our unity
    A shared identity based on:
Calling to a new life (4:1)
    Community life (4:2)
Core beliefs and experience of God (4:4-6)
    2. Incorporation as the Body of Christ
    Diverse members, one body
    Together, but with diversity: 4:11-13,16
    Together, for Christ: 4:15-16
    3. Impact through Gifting
God equips the church for impact and maturity
Foundational empowerment through the work of Christ (4:11)
    Functional equipping for service (4:12)
Fullness in maturity and completeness in Christ (4:13, 15)
    Conclusion
Know: God builds us as the body of Christ.
Be: Growing in maturity and impact for Christ.
Do: Live a life that is worthy of the calling you have received.
    REFLECTION / DISCUSSION
    1. What does having a shared identity with someone mean to you? Why is shared identity important for the church?
    For Kids:
Why do you think Jesus wants us to worship together and take care of one another as Christians?
    2. What are practical ways we can demonstrate that we are members of the same body of Christ?
    For Kids:
Why do you think Jesus calls all Christians his family? In what ways can we treat our Christian friends as family?
    3. Have you an idea of the spiritual gifting that God has given you? Are you serving in that gifting today?
    For Kids:
What kind of talent or gift would you ask God for? How does this gift benefit others?
