I’m not mechanically savvy either, but can give you a few recommendations, sir. The best info I found regarding 3126 was another TH-camr by the handle of AdeptApe, who was a CAT diesel tech out in the west. The info he provided helped guide me into what to do to my 3126-powered A3 before I drove it 2000 miles home earlier this year. For the transmission.. luckily, yours isn’t an Allison, which is super expensive. Like, I’m told that the MD3060 in my bus is like 10-12k in the transmission alone, not including labor. Since (if I remember correctly) yours is an Eaton-Fuller, I would check any heavy truck repair shop like Martin’s Peterbilt in Hurricane.
Pull the turbo-intercooler tube off and check inside the tube for an oil drip line or oil coating Caterpillars are known for turbo bearing failure which can be catastrophic If it’s coated with oil, it means the bearing or seal is starting to go bad and the turbo will fail soon I check it on my buses periodically I had a friend who’s C7 failed catastrophically when the turbo bearing exploded into a few pieces
I had to do a similar thing to my 2003 Thomas 3800. The transmission needed oiled and so did the engine since it hasnt been "serviced" for the 3 years ive owned it. Should I replace the transmission or get this one fixed? Its a DT466E paired to a 6 Speed spicer. The trans went out like twice now and I was also planning on maybe doing a full paint job.
My district used to have buses like these back in 2018 but they were retired in 2019. They had similar specs to 23 and even had the CAT 3126.
