  • Hello Skaters! Today I am going to share with you one of my favorite skating 'hacks', how to turn a basic leotard into a beautiful skating dress. While I do make custom dresses, I like to use this hack when I want to make myself a dress with a bit less time or work involved. You will need...
    A Leotard, I got mine from Capezio... www.capezio.co...
    1 Yard of 4-Way Stretch Nylon Mesh, I get mine from Spandex House... www.spandexhou...
    You will want matching thread, I get mine from... www.joann.com/...
    Other things you probably will want are some crystals, I used a 'Light Siam' shade size 20ss which you can get here... bit.ly/2P6goib
    To apply the crystals you will want,
    E600 Glue ... bit.ly/33MpllLE...
    Craft Syringes ... amzn.to/33JSG3o
    A wax tip pickup tool ... bit.ly/2LhptDL

    Thank you so much for posting this! I hacked together my first costume from a leotard and ballet skirt that I attached bling strips, floral appliqués and manicure rhinestones to and while it looked fine it was quite apparent it was homemade and pieced together last minute. This is such a great guide with so many helpful tools and tips if I ever find myself in that last minute position again OR if I can’t find a premade dress that suits my music or program. Like you I have to fund my own skating so this is very cost effective as well. Thank you thank you thank you!

    I remember I would see the leotards that the 1996 Women’s gymnastics team (better known as the Magnificent Seven), and imagine a white skirt attached to the bodice of the leotard. The top consisted of the flag pattern with the red and white stripes on one sleeve, and the blue with white stars on the other sleeve.

    Loving every second of this video :D Great examples! Love seeing you spin! Now we're so deep into the fashion of figure skating, what about jewelry on the ice, are there rules?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you enjoyed! Not really any rules about jewelry, other than you don't want it to fall off onto the ice while you are skating, and you dont want it to distract you or swing around. 😁

    I have to ask. And I'm sorry if it should be clearer to me from watching your excellent video... HOw do you know how to cut the skirt so that it has that beautiful V point. I watched the video several times and I just couldn't quite grasp it.

    • @aliweesner8736
      @aliweesner8736 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it seems like when she is cutting out the waistband of the skirt she cuts through the edge of the fabric (where it is folded) at an angle, rather than cutting totally perpendicular to that edge. hope this makes sense!

    • @robsrob1283
      @robsrob1283 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aliweesner8736 Ah. I think I see what you mean. I should probably try this with a few stiff pieces of fabric just to get a clearer sense of it. I see what you mean. The V point is so much prettier than a regular cut waist....in my opinion. Thanks for the tip.

    I am a sewist and would love to make mine and my daughters dresses from scratch. Any tips or patterns you like?

  • @willbeckytay6403
    @willbeckytay6403 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am following along on this. Two questions:
    1) Are the measurements for the waist opening standard or did you base them on your body measurements?
    2) Do you always stitch on the top of the fabric (seam out) or can you stitch with the skirt ‘upside-down’ so the seam is hidden?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions! The measurement is based on my waist size. I put the leotard on, chalk mark where I want the skirt, and then measure the circumference. As for sewing it on, you could definitely sew it upside down so that the seam is hidden.

    Hallo Julia wie heißt der Stoff genau, den du für den Rock nimmst? Du hast a einen Leotard bzw. Body als Grundgerüst. Ich habe sonst Chiffon genommen,doch der ist nicht strechig. Wie heisst dein Stoff genau?
    Wäre schön, du antwortest mit kurzfristig. LiebenDank Silvia

      Stretchmesh is what to use. Chiffon is very difficult to work with, and very delicate. Chiffon skirts are easily ruined by blades🙄
