  • How to make a Newsboy Cap, pattern and tutorial. Adult and Kid sizes available. You'll use a 3/8" seam allowance which is already included in the pattern template measurements. This cap may be made from leather or fabric. Refined pattern and techniques. I sell the pattern through my website and Etsy shop. I also sell the plastic brim inserts, sweatband material, and many other items and supplies.
    For this pattern and more leatherworking classes, supplies, tools, patterns, and art. Go to:
    www.tonyallenbernier.com/
    Some of which may also be found at:
    www.etsy.com/shop/TonyAllenBe...
    I started to sew the fold in the back when I do a one size fits all, After the sweatband is in and folded to the inside I put a line of stitches about 3/8" up across the back while I stretch that section out, it helps the cap look cleaner when you have the excess material from the bunching. I only do that on the one size fits all caps that have that style in the back. I'll put a picture of this up in my Etsy listing for the pattern.
    If you'd like to see more of my work I have a lot of pictures and albums on my Facebook page. / leatherworkerupholsterer

    • @TonyAllenBernier
      @TonyAllenBernier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, You bet, thanks. I would cut a piece of tagboard the size and shape I want to create the pattern. Then while I'm sewing the sweatband in I would stitch it between the sweatband and cap.

    • @TonyAllenBernier
      @TonyAllenBernier  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, you're welcome. Originally I was using a blended HDPE, but I've since upgraded the plastic. I believe it's still an HDPE base, but my distributor won't divulge the actual blend. I assume since we had to work at it to find the perfect plastic for what I wanted it for. I'm not really sure.....I sell the inserts, but if you're looking for an alternative, When I first started making caps I used cutting boards I found at the good will. I hope that helps.

    Dude! I work with leather and am still a beginner. I really want to make a hat like this but just tried making one with material (duck material sp?). It's thick and solid navy. I'm so jealous of how good you are. I'm trying bro but it's really hard trying to understand the pattern instructions for the elastic part. It seems to me that the elastic should at least be the exact size, possibly even stretched just a touch to line up the marks around the perimeter. I'm using the exact measurements for medium but the elastic is longer than the inside hole of the ring, which my head won't even fit through, let alone my stepdad's whom I want to make this for. I'm going to keep watching your video to see if you cover my particular issue but not sure the patterns are similar. You're a stud at making this hat though. 👍💯

    Any recommendation on what gauge thread to use on the brim when sewing on a regular home sewing machine? I can get my needle through the plastic brim, but my thread keeps breaking.

    • @TonyAllenBernier
      @TonyAllenBernier  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually go with 69 or 138. Something strong that I use when I sew upholstery, you shouldn't be able to break it with your hands. Are you using a standard machine? or something along the lines of an industrial? another option is to prepunch the holes along the brim with your sewing machine. My other thought would be the insert material, the best stuff I found I now sell out of my Etsy shop.

    • @awyoga
      @awyoga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TonyAllenBernier Thanks. I'm using a standard machine with the inserts you sell, but the threat is still breaking. I'll try pre-punching the holes if the heavier thread breaks.

    • @TonyAllenBernier
      @TonyAllenBernier  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@awyoga You may want to just punch a few holes and hand stitch the top down. 8 stitches in front , or a couple sets of 4. Your machine may not handle the plastic very well. If you have the manual for it I would take a look at that. Sharp needles always helps!

    Hi Tony! I bought the pattern from your Etsy shop and have done the cap twice now, first time I was too beginner and the material choices were poor but now the finished cap was pretty ok quality-wise but the size was really off. I wonder if it is because I pulled the elastic band too much, the band was too wide (I used really wide one) or I cutted the pattern pieces too small, regarding the last possibility does your pattern include the seam allowance and one can just cut following the line or you should add 3/8" around the sides?

    • @TonyAllenBernier
      @TonyAllenBernier  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pattern includes the seam allowance. As a side note, the thickness and stiffness of the material can also effect the sizing. I usually go one size bigger then do the custom fit method I show in the video. Hope that helps?
