    Thunderbolt doesn't give licensing fees to Apple, only Intel. Apple originally helped develop the initial part of the Thunderbolt 1 standard which used to be called "Lightpeak". Once Intel took it over and released it Apple has been hands off with it and doesn't have anything to do with the fees intel decided to associate with it. Thunderbolt licensing has caused slower adoption in devices though so this will allow most/all features of thunderbolt to be implemented in any device without licensing fees. Plus Intel will keep Thunderbolt around so they can help manufacturers certify and meet the spec perfectly, with licensing fees, unlike no certification of devices meeting the spec with USB4, without licensing fees.

    Thank you for the video. I think CES 2020 is a very ambitious timeline for actual USB4 devices, or even concepts, to start showing up in the wild. USB Promoter Group CEO Brad Saunders stated that it’ll take 12-18 months from the date of announcing the full specification (around mid 2019) for devices to start popping up. This puts us in the mid to late 2020 timeline. Honestly though, even 18 months seems optimistic. USB 3.2 (now USB 3.2 Gen 2x2) specs [20 Gbps] were announced in July 2017. We’re almost 2 years out, and still not a single laptop (or devices that I know of) supports this standard. Even high-end laptops like the Razer Blade & Gigabyte AERO 15 that were updated a few days ago in April 2019 don’t support it.

  • @professordey
    @professordey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    'USB is an open standard' Um... technically no, in that, if you actually intend to USE USB in your product, you pretty much will have to pay USB-IF a pretty significant sum, at least if you want to reach a mass market, as they charge a pretty substantial membership fee annually that is required in order to reserve a vendor id, the first part of the xxxx:xxxx code that all USB devices present to identify themselves. If you're appealing to a mass market, that is pretty much essential to make sure the user is not only able to install the correct driver, but also to prevent your operating system trying to install or use a DIFFERENT vendor's drivers because it thinks it knows what the device is. You can't just not provide this vendor/part id, it's a required part of the standard, meaning if your OS thinks that id is supported it'll try to load the 'appropriate' driver whether you want it to or not (Certainly on windows and usually on most desktop linux distros).

    Thunderbolt is moving on to version 4. The speed is the same, but standard is more strict. Also it will be built into (at least) Intel processors. In the past computer manufacturers had to licence the controller chip. This won't be necessary in future.

    Yeah it can get confusing, especially for those who don't work in tech.
    Would be nice if the USB standard was more "universal" and standard, but I think with all the pains the transition will hopefully become just one physical cable to rule them all.
    Now as for wireless standards...

    that's what the U stands for, in USB, right? "UNIVERSAL"? as in, "one for ALL"? one for all, "ACROSS THE BOARD"?

    USB connectors have given me lots of trouble. The worst are the mini ones. They are weak and break, especially on vapes and phones. The other type that gives me trouble is USB plugs that go to printers and audio interfaces (the square looking plug). I have to keep emery paper and contact cleaner handy to keep my audio interface working, because the connectors are so dodgy.

      We're talking about storage data transfer speeds here. Usb 3.0 maxed out at 5Gbps akk 500 megabytes per second ( sata gen 3 ssd speed territory),
      Thus, the only reason to care about usb 4 is if you're wanting to transfer a raw bluray quality movie or transcoded ( aka using Handbrake to shrink the movie while retaining excellent quality ) UHD/4k bluray movie from one storage device to another in which each storage device was something awesome like a pci express ssd ( like 750 GB intel aic pci express ssd or a m.2 ultra ssd like a samsung 870 or 970pro) that handles easily more than 800GBs per second.

    Now it is a question of how soon this is worth getting. I have literally 2 devices that use the USB C port style. That being my phone and an external sound device that I run my headphones from and sometimes use for recording. Where USB 3 cards had type A ports that were largely backwards compatible with previous devices, I doubt it will really be worth switching for a while unless you do a lot of file transfer to external devices.
    On the question of Thunderbolt, I have never actually owned a Thunderbolt device and only actually saw them when I was working at PC World. In my mind for most people USB is going to be the standard outside of specific use cases.
