This is the problem with democracy, not necessarily with the elite. When political parties tried to take the shortcut routes in the 90s in order to keep getting elected (which is the entire exercise of democracy to begin with), they signed bad deals. Now we are paying the price. Anyways, its not the end of the world. Things can still be made to work.

We need to attempt paying down the high interest rates loans first. Also any kind if foreign investments must also be judged on whether the benefits obtained from it in terms of economic boost outweighs signifanctly any costs associated with it, such as profit repatriation.
